Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple is Testing an iOS 7.1.2 Update

Apple is working on an iOS 7.1.2 update and hits from devices running the new firmware have been appearing in web logs since last Friday, reports MacRumors.
Activity is still low, but that is typical for the early stages of update testing, particularly minor ones that may not require widespread internal or external testing. As a minor update, iOS 7.1.2 is likely to focus on bug fixes and other tweaks rather than major feature additions, and it likely will not even be put through a developer testing period before release.
Apple has already announced that at least two issues will be resolved in a future software update. The first is a problem which Andreas Kurtz, a security researcher, discovered. Contrary to Apple’s claims email attachments are not being encrypted in iOS 7. The second is an issue that results in messages sent to a number no longer using iOS to be sent as an undeliverable iMessage instead of as a SMS.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple Says Server Issue Worsened iMessage Problems

Apple has reportedly fixed a server-side issue that worsened iMessage problems experienced by users switching from iPhone to other mobile operating systems.
Users have grown increasingly irate with Apple over a bug that manifests when switching from iOS to another operating system while keeping the same number. Often Apple’s system doesn’t recognize that their number is no longer associated with an iOS device and messages from other iOS users are still sent via iMessage, which can’t be received on their new device. This has resulted in large number of unreceived SMS messages.
A women in California is now seeking class-action status for a lawsuit against Apple, saying that Apple is deprive former customers of the ability to get full value from their wireless service after switching. The suit claims Apple has violated California’s unfair competition law and interfered with carrier’s ability to deliver its promised service.

Brye Michael Kobayashi, a student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, has posted his concept for an iTunes redesign inspired by iOS.
“iTunes is one of the most essential applications on OS X”, says Kobayashi. “For many of us, it aggregates all our music, movies, apps and backups for our devices. While over the years updates have added functionality, the overall experience hasn’t really changed.”
Some issues he found with the current version of iOS include:
? Drop down menu to switch libraries is confusing and adds another unnecessary step.
? Narrow rows and small text reduces visibility.
? Disconnect between old and new design style.
? Multiple scrolling lists and small banners overwhelm the experience.
? Home page cluttered with random assortment of media.
? Quick links are mostly pointless and take up valuable x-axis space.

- What iOS Would Look Like on an iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch Display [Video]

Check out the video below which shows a dummy model iPhone 6 running a simulated version of iOS made for a 4.7-inch display. The video simply takes a 4.7-inch Moto X and places it behind the bezel of an iPhone 6 dummy unit to give us a representation of what iOS would look like.
I was curious to know exactly how iOS would be represented on a 4.7-inch display, so I decided to make an iPhone 6 simulator. This “simulator” takes the 4.7-inch Moto X and places it behind what is rumored to be the bezel for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6. It has been reported that most of the user-interface will be upscaled with the possibility of certain apps being revamped to take advantage of the extra space.
It has been noted that some apps may end up getting their user-interface simply upscaled, while some apps might see some UI tweaks thanks to the larger screen area to work with. It has also been reported that Apple’s next iPhone will feature a resolution of 1704 x 960, giving a 4.7-inch model a PPI of 416, and a 5.5-inch iPhone a 356 PPI.

Apple has selected Innolux as its third supplier of displays for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, reports Taiwan’s Economic Daily News.

Previous reports had Sharp pegged as the third supplier; however, the Economic Daily News says that Innolux Display may be Apple’s choice.
Samsung, Sharp, and Innolux were reportedly in the running. Samsung is said to have been rejected to reduce Apple’s reliance on the company. Sharp’s sample display panels allegedly suffered from ‘moire’ issues and thus Innolux was chosen as the third manufacturer.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - I0n1c Explains How His iOS 7.1.1 Jailbreak Works

Stefan Esser, a hacker known as i0n1c, has posted an explanation of how his jailbreak of iOS 7.1.1 works.
The jailbreak, which has not yet been released, is unique in that it uses a kernel bug which is hidden inside functionality that can be easily reached, even from within the iOS application sandbox.
This means that the exploit code can be used to break out of any application that you exploit. This is very different from nearly all of the kernel vulnerabilities used in iOS jailbreaks since iOS 4. There have been only 2 publicly disclosed vulnerabilities that had this power. The first has been used in comex’s JailbreakMe3 and the other one is the posix_spawn() vulnerability disclosed by SektionEins during SyScan 2013 and later used by the jailbreak community in the p0sixpwn jailbreak.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Italy Investigates Apple Over Freemium Apps

Italy’s Antitrust and Competition Authority has launched an investigation into whether Apple, Google, Amazon, and Gameloft mislead users into making purchases in apps that are initially free to download, reports the WSJ.
The move by Italy’s Antitrust and Competition Authority comes after the European Union earlier this year called on companies to reform their use of the “freemium” model in which apps are free to download, but then later require payments that often get charged to credit cards by default. The EU says consumer confusion with the freemium model threatens the long-term health of the continent’s booming “app economy” that employs more than one million people and is forecast to produce €63 billion in total revenue in 2018, more than triple last year’s level.
“Consumers could be led to think, contrary to reality, that a game is completely free and therefore they don’t know ahead of time the game’s true cost,” the regulator said. “It appears also that there is a lack of information regarding how to exclude or limit the possibility of making a purchase inside the app.”

Shipments of smartphones with 5-inch or larger displays grew 369% last quarter reaching 34% of all smartphones sold, reports Canalys. That number is even higher in greater China (39%) and Asia Pacific (43%).
“This is still a market segment led by Samsung, but the trend is unmistakably toward larger-screen handsets at the high end of the market. It held a 44% share of devices with displays of 5″ and above, and 53% if the view is narrowed to look at 5.5″-plus displays,” said Canalys Analyst Jessica Kwee. “But many other vendors, such as Lenovo, Huawei, LG and Sony, have also achieved significant volumes in this space with products at the top end of their portfolios. Consumers now expect high-end devices to have large displays, and Apple’s absence in this market will clearly not last long. It is notable that 5″ and above displays featured on almost half (47%) of smart phones with an unlocked retail price of US$500 or more. Of the remaining 53% of high-end smart phones, 87% were iPhones. Apple plainly needs a larger-screen smart phone to remain competitive, and it will look to address this in the coming months.”
Apple is expected to release a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 as soon as August and follow that up with a 5.5-inch iPhone 6 as early as September.

We knew Flappy Bird would fly again, but now according to the developer, we could expect the addictive game to make a return in August with multiplayer support!
For those of you that do not remember, Developer Dong Nguyen shocked users around the world when he tweeted that he was going to take down the game. “I am sorry ‘Flappy Bird’ users,” it read. “22 hours from now, I will take ‘Flappy Bird’ down. I cannot take this anymore.” Nguyen was pulling in $50,000 a day from advertising revenue because of the game before pulling it.
As promised, the game was removed hours later. Almost immediately, game developers rushed to fill the void with similar games such as Flappy Flyer, Flappy Wings, and others flooding the App Store.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Facebook Testing Contextual Content Cards on iOS App

Facebook is testing a new feature in its iOS App — and this time its contextual content cards that appear after you share your recent activity. For instance, if you post a status saying you’re at Yosemite National Park, you will see a card popup of other friends’ photos at Yosemite National Park, or other friends who posted at Yosemite National park. The cards could respond to places you’ve been, music you’re listening to, friends you tag, and much more.
A new test on iOS surfaces related content cards including photos of restaurants you say you’re at, friends who’ve checked in where you did, photos of friends you check in with or mention in a status, and friends who listened to a song you just posted. The cards make News Feed feel alive.
The new feature is currently rolling out to a small subset of iOS users. You can see a screenshot below of an example of two different posts. For instance the card on the right could appear if you post a status saying you’re “watching Grand Budapest Hotel”. If you’re on the latest Facebook app, we can expect to see the changes sometime soon as the update is coming out OTA.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Transition to '3x' Images for iPhone 6 Less Drastic Than Transition to '2x' Images for Retina Display

If Apple announces an iPhone 6 with a resolution of 1704×960 developers will need to update their apps with ‘3x’ images. However, MacRumors forum member pgiguere1 notes that ‘2x’ images on the iPhone 6 won’t look as bad as ‘1x’ images looked on the Retina display.
Unlike with the @1x -> @2x transition we had in 2010, this time we’d only have a 50% enlargement rather than 100%. The thing is, a 50% enlargement with interpolation doesn’t look worse than a 100% enlargement with pixel-doubling, despite the loss of details due to the interpolation…
As you can see, older non-@3x-optimized apps would actually look better on an @3x iPhone than non-@2x-opitmized apps did on an @2x iPhone. Add to this the fact that the screen’s pixel density would be higher this time around, and the perceived image quality difference would be even smaller.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Columbia Students Get iOS Apps Running on Android [Video]

Columbia University students have managed to get iOS apps running on Android by creating Cider, an operating system compatibility architecture that can run applications built for different mobile ecosystems.
Cider enhances the domestic operating system, Android, of a device with kernel-managed, per-thread personas to mimic the application binary interface of a foreign operating system, iOS, enabling it to run unmodified foreign binaries. This is accomplished using a novel combination of binary compatibility techniques including two new mechanisms: compile-time code adaptation, and diplomatic functions. Compile-time code adaptation enables existing unmodified foreign source code to be reused in the domestic kernel, reducing implementation effort required to support multiple binary interfaces for executing domestic and foreign applications. Diplomatic functions leverage per-thread personas, and allow foreign applications to use domestic libraries to access proprietary software and hardware interfaces.
Check out a demo video of Cider below. Notably, Android apps can still run on the device even with the OS abstraction layer. While app performance still needs improving, the project is promising. You can find the full research report here.

Both Dr. Dre and Jimmy lovine are likely to take senior positions at Apple following the acquisition of Beats, reports the WSJ. The acquisition has not yet been officially confirmed; however, a video that surfaced on Facebook appears to confirm the $3.2 billion deal.
As Apple completes a deal to buy headphone and streaming-service company Beats Electronics LLC from Mr. Iovine and his co-founder, rap star Dr. Dre, both men are likely to take senior positions with the Cupertino, Calif., tech company, according to people familiar with the matter, commuting from the Los Angeles area to Silicon Valley—or meetings elsewhere—as needed. Though the details of the men’s potential Apple assignments remain unclear, the mere possibility underscores how Apple’s corporate culture has loosened under the leadership of Mr. Jobs’s successor, Chief Executive Tim Cook.
A source tells the WSJ that lovine will leave his post as chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M records, a division of Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group. though it isn’t clear how soon he would depart. Universal owns 14% of Beats and would get about $500 million from the acquisition. They’d likely let lovine leave ahead of his contract expiration early next year.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Security Researcher Discovers That Email Attachments Are Not Being Encrypted in iOS 7

Andreas Kurtz, a security researcher, has discovered that contrary to Apple’s claims email attachments are not being encrypted in iOS 7.
Apple says that “Data protection enhances the built-in hardware encryption by protecting the hardware encryption keys with your passcode. This provides an additional layer of protection for your email messages attachments, and third-party applications.” While data protection does appear to be functioning for most data, Kurtz says its not working with email attachments.
I verified this issue by restoring an iPhone 4 (GSM) device to the most recent iOS versions (7.1 and 7.1.1) and setting up an IMAP email account, which provided me with some test emails and attachments. Afterwards, I shut down the device and accessed the file system using well-known techniques (DFU mode, custom ramdisk, SSH over usbmux). Finally, I mounted the iOS data partition and navigated to the actual email folder. Within this folder, I found all attachments accessible without any encryption/restriction

LuxVue had managed to remain fairly quiet over the past few years, and what we know is that the company develops low-power, micro-LED-based displays for consumer electronics. We’ve heard Apple acquired the company to add to its hardware innovations area. Because the company is working on mirco-LED displays, this could mean that the technology could be integrated into Apple’s hardware for better battery life and screen brightness.
Notably, at Disrupt SF last year, KPCB partner John Doerr said LuxVue had “a technical breakthrough in displays.”

Another physical mockup of the alleged iPhone 6 has surfaced online.
Macitynet posted a photo of the unit yesterday noting that case manufacturers use these models to test the fit of their new case designs.
The iPhone 6 will have rounded edges and the Standby button will be shifted to the right in order to ensure easy access when used with a single hand, given the increase of the display which will expand slightly on the short side of the device. We see however also two thin lines on the upper and lower edges that probably indicate a design similar to that of the iPhone, characterized by an aluminum back but broken by two bands in another material (maybe in the glass as the iPhone 5S) which should ensure proper operation of the antenna. Of note, the projection lens of the camera; the technical solution is the same as for the latest generation of iPod touch, remember, has just a protruding ring that protects the glass lens, reading to the surface of the back.

If you follow the Obscure Analyst, you would already know GT turned on 140 furnaces on January 10th, 2014 and UBS checks indicate that the “Quick Start 140” furnaces made their first delivery of sapphire ingot in to one of Apple’s partners in China who will make the sapphire covers. A sapphire ingot is a sapphire that is “cored” out of the boule that will need to be sliced into sapphire screens. UBS indicated that 2,200 kg of sapphire ingots were shipped to China for processing. I am estimating that approximately 100,000 to 115,000 sapphire screens could be produced from 2,200 kg of sapphire ingots. GT’s selling price per screen based on the information provided is falling into the range of $8.50 to $10 per screen.

Google announced today that it’s shifted the focus of the Google self-driving car project onto mastering city street driving.
Since our last update, we’ve logged thousands of miles on the streets of our hometown of Mountain View, Calif. A mile of city driving is much more complex than a mile of freeway driving, with hundreds of different objects moving according to different rules of the road in a small area. We’ve improved our software so it can detect hundreds of distinct objects simultaneously—pedestrians, buses, a stop sign held up by a crossing guard, or a cyclist making gestures that indicate a possible turn. A self-driving vehicle can pay attention to all of these things in a way that a human physically can’t—and it never gets tired or distracted.
Google says that what looks chaotic and random on a city street is actually fairly predictable to a computer. They’ve built software models for thousands of different situations; however, there are still many more to solve.

Fortune has compiled an average estimate for the number of Macs sold last quarter from professional and amateur analysts. At 12% the Mac is now Apple’s third biggest money maker, after the iPhone at 52% and iPad at 20%.
Estimates indicate that after four quarters with year-over-year declines the Mac may have finally see some year-over-year growth.
Although a third of the 33 analysts we’ve heard from so far — 13 amateurs and 20 Wall Street professionals — think Apple will report another decline in unit sales next week, two thirds believe sales actually rose year over year. The average analyst’s estimate is just over 4 million Macs, a 2.8% increase over the same quarter last year. The pros (at 4.1 million) are slightly — but only slightly — more bullish than the amateurs (4 million) this time around.

This malware appears to have Chinese origin and comes as a library called Unflod.dylib that hooks into all running processes of jailbroken iDevices and listens to outgoing SSL connections. From these connections it tries to steal the device’s Apple-ID and corresponding password and sends them in plaintext to servers with IP addresses in control of US hosting companies for apparently Chinese customers.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Marissa Mayer Wants Apple to Drop Google and Default to Yahoo for Search

Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo, is focused on building a viable mobile search engine and monetization platform and getting Apple to use Yahoo as its default search engine, according to Re/code. Currently, Google is the default search engine on Apple’s mobile devices; however, you can choose to switch to Yahoo if you so desire.
A number of Yahoo insiders I have talked to said her plan to pitch Apple on the idea as its marquee mobile search partner is far along. The company has prepared detailed decks, including images of what such a search product would look like, and hopes to present them to Apple execs. That has not happened as yet officially and no deal is imminent — it’s just the big honking goal of the new Yahoo effort, said sources.
“This is the aim of the whole effort here, to grab the pole position in iOS search,” said one person working on the effort. “It will take more than pretty pictures, though, to convince Apple to give up Google, given its focus on consumer experience being top-notch. But Marissa wants it very badly.”

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple to Partner With Shazam to Bring Music Identification Feature to iOS?

Apple is reportedly planning to bring a new music identification feature to iOS that will be powered by Shazam, reports Bloomberg. Shazam’s popular app for iOS can quickly determine which song is playing using the built-in microphone.
The song-identification feature will be integrated into the mobile software in the same way that Twitter Inc. (TWTR)’s service is currently incorporated, meaning consumers don’t need to separately download it. Among the ways it can be used will be through Apple’s voice-activated search feature, Siri. An iPhone user will be able to say something like “what song is playing,” to find out the tune’s details, one person said. The song-matching feature could boost Shazam, whose app was an early hit and has steered millions of song downloads through iTunes.
Apple is making attempts to boost the performance of iTunes as downloads have recently slowed. It’s been reported that Apple may even move to a subscription based model or release an iTunes app for Android.
