  • Apple's Share of Smartphone Sales in Asian Markets Has Soared Since Releasing the iPhone 6

Apple share of smartphone sales in Asian markets has soared since the company released the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, according to a new report from Counterpoint Research, relayed by the WSJ. Much of the company’s gains come at Samsung’s expense.

Apple showed big gains in Japan, China and South Korea, with the most striking increase coming in Samsung’s domestic market, where that company used to have an unassailable position. In November, Apple’s market share in that country soared to 33% from less than 15% before the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were introduced, Counterpoint said. Apple passed another South Korean brand, LG Electronics, with a 14% share, to move into the No. 2 position behind Samsung, whose share fell to 46%. Until November, Samsung’s share was hovering at around 60%.

“No foreign brand has gone beyond the 20% market share mark in the history of Korea’s smartphone industry,” said Tom Kang, research director for mobile devices at Counterpoint. “It has always been dominated by the global smartphone leader, Samsung. But iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have made a difference here, denting the competition’s phablet sales.”

We have yet to hear anything official from respected members of the jailbreak community on the safety of PP Jailbreak, so please use the tool at your own risk. We were able to successfully jailbreak our device at iClarified and have not had any issues yet.

  • Apple to Release Optional Stylus for Larger iPad Pro?

A new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, relayed by MacRumors, predicts that Apple will release an optional stylus to accompany its rumored 122.2 – 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The stylus would likely be targeted at enterprise and creative users.

Given that it’s more precise than a person’s fingers, a stylus can be more convenient to use than the combination of keyboard and mouse in some cases. Therefore, we believe Apple’s stylus will improve the user experience of 12.9-inch iPad.

Kuo doesn’t think that Apple will include the stylus with the iPad as it will drive its price too high.

  • Auxo 3 Gets Updated With New Features and Improvements

A3 tweaks has released Auxo 3 version 1.1, bringing several new features and improvements to the popular jailbreak tweak.

At its core, Auxo 3 is comprised of three powerful features: Multi-Center, Quick Switcher, and Hot Corners. By intuitively utilizing the bottom edge of the screen, all three functions perform synergistically with one another as well as completely stand-alone, depending on your configuration.

? Multi-Center gives you the ability to slide up from the bottom middle edge of the screen to access your Multitasking display, without losing the vital functionality traditionally found only in Control Center. Here you have access to the app switcher, brightness and volume sliders, playback controls and info, toggles, AirDrop and AirPlay, as well as the quick launcher (via a swipe up from the bottom, if hidden). Multi-Center also lets you expand app previews by pulling them downward, view full-screen album art by tapping the track title (hold to open app), and even beautifully close all apps by swiping the home screen preview up! Use Minimal Display mode for a cleaner look by hiding AirDrop/AirPlay and track seeker sections (still accessible via a swipe near the top or bottom).

  • Filming for Steve Jobs Movie Finally Begins at Jobs' Childhood Home [Photos]

Camera crews have arrived at Steve Jobs’ childhood home in Los Altos to begin shooting the new movie based on Walter Isaacson’s biography. The movie is written by Aaron Sorkin, directed by Danny Boyle, and stars Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs and Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak.

CNET was onsite to describe the scene as crews prepared to film in the garage where Jobs and Wozniak got started.

Cinderblock and wood shelves are pieced together along the walls. Roller skates, a Thermos, an old vacuum cleaner and 8-track player and stereo lay haphazardly about. An advertisement for a Braun electric coffee maker hangs on the wall, as does a poster featuring Bob Dylan holding a “Get Born” sign from a film clip featuring the song “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” And the house itself has been painted a beige color with darker tan trim, contrasting with the formerly lighter exterior.

  • Apple Seeds Second Beta of iOS 8.1.3 to Retail Employees

Apple has reportedly seeded a second beta of iOS 8.1.3 to retail employees. The build is numbered 12B466 and is six builds newer than the last beta seeded last Wednesday, reports MacRumors.

Last week, we speculated that the iOS 8.1.3 beta was close to release due to the fact that it was shared with quite a few retail employees, but it appears there are still bugs that Apple is working on fixing before it provides the 8.1.3 update to the public. MacRumors continues to see an uptick in the number of visits received from devices running iOS 8.1.3, and while we expect the update will be released to the public in the next week or two, it is not clear exactly when a launch could come.

iOS 8.1.3 apparently contains only bug fixes. At this point it’s unclear whether the firmware blocks the ability to jailbreak. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or RSS for updates.

  • iPhone 6 Sent 101,000 Feet Into Space [Video]

Check out this video of the iPhone 6 in an Urban Armour Gear case being sent 101,000 feet into space.

On November 28th, 2014 we sent a brand new iPhone 6 on the ultimate adventure to the stratosphere. On its journey, the iPhone reached a height of over 101,000 feet and encountered temperatures as cold as -79 degrees F and winds as strong as 70 MPH. During the descent the iPhone 6 and flight rig withstood a 150 PRM rotation as the parachute deployed and the rig fought to stabilize. Upon landing the flight rig broke apart, however the iPhone remained unscathed and in perfect working order.

The flight rig contained two GoPro cameras, 1 GPS locator and a backup phone with GPS and active tracking installed. The flight lasted over 3 hours and covered 12 miles across the ground. The iPhone 6 was wrapped in our composite iPhone 6 case with no screen protector installed. The iPhone was on upon takeoff but froze and shut down as the temperature dropped. • Apple Predicted to Launch ARM-Based Macs in the Next Year or Two

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a new report outlining his predictions for Apple chips over the next few years.

As one might expect, Kuo predicts that Apple will diversify its supplier lineup for A-series chips used in iOS devices. Samsung, TSMC, and GlobalFoundries are all said to contribute to future production.

For the A9 chip, Kuo predicts that production will be shared by Samsung and Global Foundries. TSMC is said to be responsible for production of the A9X processor that will reportedly be used in iPad models. In 2016 that split is said to flip with TSMC handling A10 production and Samsung being responsible for A10X chips.

  • 18% of iPhone 6 Owners Say They Will 'Definitely' Buy an Apple Watch [Chart]

18% of iPhone 6 owners say they will ‘definitely’ buy an Apple Watch and 11% say they will ‘probably’ purchase the device, according to a Credit Suisse survey.

That 18% would translate to roughly 35 million units; however, Credit Suisse believes that Apple will make just 20 million Apple Watches in 2015. That would suggest a supply shortage when the smartwatch goes on sale early this year.

  • Apple, Google, Intel, and Adobe Reach New Deal to Settle Anti-Poaching Lawsuit

Apple, Google, Intel, and Adobe have agreed to a new settlement to end a class action lawsuit that accused the companies of conspiring to prevent the poaching of each other’s employees, reports Reuters.

Plaintiffs accused Apple, Google, Intel Corp and Adobe Systems Inc in their 2011 lawsuit of limiting job mobility and, as a result, keeping a lid on salaries. The case has been closely watched because of the possibility of big damages being awarded and for the opportunity to peek into the world of some of America’s elite tech firms.

After a plaintiff objected, a previous settlement of $324.5 million was rejected by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh as being too low. Reportedly, that plaintiff will not object to the new settlement deal; however, his attorney would not reveal the amount of the new settlement and it was not in the court filing.

  • Apple Reportedly Expanding Pre-Release iOS Testing to Retail Employees

Apple is reportedly working to expand pre-release iOS testing to retail employees, reports 9to5mac. Sources say the expanded testing program will begin in the near-future with an upcoming iOS release, perhaps iOS 8.2.

This new program will mark Apple’s first expansion of pre-release iOS version testing beyond developers and employees within the walls of Apple’s Cupertino headquarters. For the past few Mac OS X releases, Apple has provided early copies of the system to employees, which has helped Apple identify bugs before public launches.

iOS pre-releases have always been limited to developers and select corporate employees, but Apple’s expansion to retail employees is most likely is an effort to improve the software quality of iOS. Apple greatly expanded OS X’s testing pool with a public beta of OS X Yosemite last year.

  • Foxconn Display Factory to Supply Apple With OLED Panels?

A new report from Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, a leading newspaper in Japan, says that Foxconn is going to use its new display factory to provide Apple with OLED displays.

Translating the report, GforGames says that the current goal is for OLED panels to enter limited production in 2016. Foxconn Japan RD Co. will apparently handle research in manufacturing, technology and equipment of OLED displays.

According to the source, these OLED displays will be used for smartphones and wearables. This raises quite a few important question in regards to Apple’s future plans, not only because LG is currently the main supplier of panels for the iWatch (Apple’s only wearable at this point), but also due to the fact that so far Apple has only used LCD displays in the production of its iPhones.

  • Manhattan District Attorney Calls iPhone Encryption 'An Issue of Public Safety'

With iOS 8, Apple rolled out many security and privacy enhancements. One of the biggest security features included encryption of your personal data such as photos, messages, emails, call history and more. On the new operating system, Apple cannot decrypt or extract any of the information on your device, even if it was required to do so.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance sees these new security and privacy features as “an issue of public safety, ” and believes Apple should be required to decrypt the information on the phone.

“It’s developed into a sort of high-stakes game,” Vance said. “They’ve eliminated accessibility in order to market the product. Now that means we have to figure out how to solve a problem that we didn’t create.”

  • Griffin Announces iTrip Aux Bluetooth and iTrip Aux AutoPilot [Video]

Griffin Technology is rolling out two new products in its iTrip collection of car audio accessories. The iTrip Aux Bluetooth gives users the ability to add Bluetooth connectivity to existing cars, and the iTrip Aux Autopilot brings a dash-mounted remote control and charger to cars.

“Audio streaming services like Pandora and Spotify have given us access to our favorite music wherever we go,” said James Finney, Category Manager of Griffin’s power products. “But unless you have a newer model car, streaming directly through your stereo can be cumbersome, with poor sound quality. Our new iTrip AUX Bluetooth and iTrip AUX AutoPilot both make it easy for users to listen to the cleanest, best-quality audio through their car stereo.”

The iTrip Aux Bluetooth adds bluetooth capability to any auxiliary-equipped car. Users must plug in the iTrip adapter into the car’s power outlet, then into the car’s auxiliary input. Griffin says the iTrip Aux Bluetooth streams the “cleanest, best-quality audio wirelessly from any Bluetooth-enabled smartphone.”

The Reach79 line of smartphone cases are powered by patented antenna technology, and are embedded with a thin, gold plated antenna that helps increase signal strength. • Monster Sues Beats and Co-Founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine

Monster, which helped design the original Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, is suing Beats Electronics, and co-founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. Beats was acquired last year by Apple.

Monster claims that Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine both stole the technology behind Monster headphones when the two companies worked together. The suit also claims the two conspired to get rid of Monster and worked to damage the Monster reputation.

The suit, filed in San Mateo (Calif.) County Superior Court, charges that the Beats co-founders concealed the role of Monster and Lee in designing and engineering the headphone line, as well as educating them about engineering, manufacturing, distributing and selling the headphones that Monster and Lee invented.

  • Renders of Larger iPad Rear Shell Leaked Out of Foxconn?

Renders of a larger iPad rear shell have reportedly been leaked from out of Foxconn. The images were posted online earlier today by Nowhereelse.

Captured gently by a worker who claims to work in a factory FOXCONN, the snapshot below seems to confirm the existence of the imposing shelf. The employee in question specifies that the phases of testing (EVT) launched in the course of last summer were halted following the recent approval by Apple last prototypes made by a subcontractor and that production top boxes that will host the components of this iPad XXL is about to start.

The person who took the photo claims the thickness is between 6.9 and 7.5mm. Notably, in the image we can see additional speaker holes at the top of the device supporting claims that the larger iPad, possibly called the iPad Pro or iPad Plus will have stereo speakers. Previous reports suggest that the iPad will feature a 12.2-inch LCD and be 7mm thick.

  • ReachApp Tweak Gets Updated With App Chooser for Better Split-Screen Multitasking

ReachApp tweak, which uses Reachability to bring split-screen multitasking to jailbroken devices, has been updated with a new app chooser and much more.

For those unfamiliar with ReachApp, it is a tweak that brings a multitasking view to Reachability (the feature Apple launched with iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus). In the latest update to ReachApp, the tweak now displays an app chooser to select an app to run in split-screen multitasking instead of simply loading the last ran application.

Along with the new app selector, the update includes a new scaling rotation mode that forces applications into portrait mode and scales them to the proper screen size in landscape mode. The developer notes that the new scaling rotation mode is still in beta and still needs some work. The entire change log includes:

  • iPod Cover Concept Shows a Smart Accessory Cover for iPhone 6

iPod Cover is a smart accessory concept designed by Claudio Gomboli for your iPhone 6 that essentially turns the front of your iPhone into an iPod Classic.

More importantly, the iPod Cover brings back the click-wheel with controls feedback and an updated UI since the screen space has now been reduced. In Gomboli’s vision, the new UI would feature notifications, widgets, and more — all without opening the cover of the device. When the case closes, the phone would switch UIs to match the smaller display (similar to Apple’s Smart Cases that simply turn off the display).

The iPod Cover for iPhone 6 would come in multiple colors, feature premium leather, and a low 3mm profile.

There is also an option to add any repository which works with Cydia, and to make Cydia Store purchases.

  • Apple Retail Stores Adopt 'Start Something New' Campaign

Apple’s ‘Start Something New’ highlights individual pieces of art created on on Apple products using different apps, and Apple has now extended some of the art to their retail stores. The campaign just recently expanded to the U.S. and other countries after first launching in Japan, and now the company is transforming its retail stores’ walls into art galleries to promote it.

Every piece in this gallery was created on an Apple product. Every brushstroke, every pixel, and every frame of film was brought to life by talented Apple users from around the world. As you explore their work, we hope it inspires you to create something new.

Apple seems to be adding the art to stores around the world and users can even use the official Apple Store app to learn more about the art hanging on the walls. On the campaigns website, the art is much more colorful than the black and white galleries found in the retail stores.

  • Hacker Releases New Tool to Brute-Force Attack iCloud Passwords

iDict, a new tool released by Pr0x13, claims to bypass brute-force safeguards and two-factor authentication when cracking an iCloud account password.

Currently Apple locks a user’s account if it notices many incorrect password attempts in a short amount of time. iDict bypasses the restriction and essentially has an “unlimited” amount of attempts to guess at an account’s password. The tool uses a dictionary of common passwords and attempts to find a match, so if you’re password isn’t on the list, you’re safe; however, another hacker could always use a different dictionary. Additionally, you need to have the account’s email address in order to attempt to crack the password.

Pr0x13 says the hole was “painfully obvious” and it was only a matter of time before it was used privately for malicious activities; therefore, he released it publicly so Apple could close it.

  • Google Now Streaming 'The Interview' on Google Play and YouTube Movies

Google has officially announced that it’s made ‘The Interview’ available to rent or buy via Google Play and YouTube Movies.

Last Wednesday Sony began contacting a number of companies, including Google, to ask if we’d be able to make their movie, “The Interview,” available online. We’d had a similar thought and were eager to help—though given everything that’s happened, the security implications were very much at the front of our minds.

Of course it was tempting to hope that something else would happen to ensure this movie saw the light of day. But after discussing all the issues, Sony and Google agreed that we could not sit on the sidelines and allow a handful of people to determine the limits of free speech in another country (however silly the content might be).

  • Apple Reportedly Declined Offer From Sony Pictures to Stream 'The Interview' on iTunes

Apple reportedly declined an offer form Sony Pictures to stream the controversial film “The Interview” on iTunes. According to The New York Times, Apple showed no interest to stream the film, especially with the speedy time table Sony was requesting.

It remained unclear, however, whether any on-demand service would take “The Interview.” According to people briefed on the matter, Sony had in recent days asked the White House for help in lining up a single technology partner — Apple, which operates iTunes — but the tech company was not interested, at least not on a speedy time table. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

“The Interview” has become a highly-anticipated film after it was cancelled by Sony Pictures. Hackers (presumably with ties to North Korea) breached Sony’s internal systems and leaked terabytes of data. Additionally, the hackers threatened any theater that participated in the movie’s release, which was slated for December 25 — Christmas Day; however, Sony changed its plans and is now releasing the film in online, through its website, and some theaters.

  • Auxo 3 Tweak for iOS 8 Released

Auxo 3, a new version of the popular jailbreak tweak, has been released for iOS 8. Auxo 3 builds on many of the powerful enhancements Auxo 2 delivered, while bringing new features as well. Just like its predecessor, the tweak was designed by Sentry and developed by A3 tweaks.

At its core, Auxo 3 is comprised of three powerful features: Multi-Center, Quick Switcher, and Hot Corners. By intuitively utilizing the bottom edge of the screen, all three functions perform synergistically with one another as well as completely stand-alone, depending on your configuration.

  • Apple Patent Shows Reverse AirPlay Streaming from an Apple TV to iOS Device

Apple has just been awarded a patent that outlines reverse AirPlay from an Apple TV to an iOS device. Specifically, the patent describes synchronizing a video stream on a fixed display, such as an Apple TV, with other smaller devices like an iPhone or an Apple Watch.

A method and system are described for displaying a synchronized instance of content on a portable electronic device. In the described embodiments, a selection of streaming content that is being displayed on a fixed display system is received by the portable electronic device. The portable electronic device then determines if the portable electronic device is compatible with the streaming content being received by the fixed display system. If the portable electronic device is compatible with the streaming content being received by the fixed display system, then the portable electronic device requests the synchronized instance of the streaming content and displays it.

Apple describes a scenario where a group of people are watching a movie on an Apple TV, and one person has to leave. The group could either pause the movie and wait, or simple keep watching and let the person who left miss out on programming. Apple’s solution is to enable the user who leaves the room temporarily to keep watching on portable devices (iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch).

Adoption of iOS 8 was initially slower than iOS 7; however, it has been increasing steadily. • Apple Considering iPhone 6s Mini with 4-Inch Display?

While Apple moved away from the 4-inch iPhone this year, analyst Timothy Arcuri of Cowen and Company claims Apple has been working on a new 4-inch “iPhone 6s Mini” that could debut in 2015.

According to Arcuri, Apple could debut iPhones with three different screen sizes in 2015 with the iPhone 6s Mini joining the current 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models. The new 4-inch device would be similar to the iPhone 5s, but feature an updated design with curved screen edges — similar to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The new 4-inch phone could serve as a replacement for the iPhone 5c that Apple currently sells; however, Arcuri believes the newer model will include “purpose-built low cost components” from Qualcomm to keep the price down.

  • Apple Campus 2 Aerial Tour [Video]

A new aerial video of the Apple Campus 2 has been posted online by AppleInsider showing progress on the ‘spaceship’ ring and parking garage. There are now over a dozen large cranes operating at the site.

The bare, compacted soil fill of the excavated spaceship ring structure is now completely covered, with concrete joists now being laid out to build a floor structure. Earth ramps extending down into the ring floor are all gone; vehicles access is now provided through channels that will eventually connect to a rebuilt Pruneridge roadway that ducks underground to send cars beneath the surface to either the basement of the ring or to the two large parking structures at the south end of the site.

In the photos below you can also see that Apple’s underground theater is starting taking shape and the parking structure has now reached three stories. Recent building permits reveal the auditorium is valued at $161 million.

  • Apple CEO Tim Cook Named CNN's 'CEO of the Year'

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been selected as CNN’s CEO of the Year.

Apple is the apple of Wall Street’s eye again. And that’s why Tim Cook is our choice for best CEO of 2014.The stock is up 40% this year and near an all-time high thanks to the launch of the latest iPhones and Apple Pay service as well as excitement about the Apple Watch due out in 2015.

Who is Tim Cook? Cook has arguably the toughest CEO job in America. He’s had to convince skeptics that Apple (AAPL, Tech30) can still innovate after the death of Steve Jobs. He’s proven all the naysayers wrong.
