  • iPhone and iPad Revenues Compared to Entire Companies [Charts]

A brief comparison of Apple’s iPhone and iPad sales compared to the some of the largest companies around has been compiled by Slate.

Apple generated $19.74 billion in iPhone sales last quarter. That’s more than Amazon’s last reported quarterly revenue. It’s also more than the revenues of Coca-Cola and McDonald’s combined. Google and eBay combined barely beat that number.

iPad sales are lower than iPhone at $5.9 billion; however, that’s still greater than Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Groupon, and Tesla. Those companies combined barely outweigh Apple’s Mac sales of $5.5 billion.

  • BetterWiFi7 Tweak Adds Enhancements to Wi-Fi Functionality in iOS

BetterWiFi7 is a tweak from Simon Selg that adds enhancements to the Wi-Fi functionality of iOS 7.

Here are are some of the added features:
? “Pull to Refresh”: Allows you to refresh the network list by pulling it down, like in the mail app.
? “Open networks only” switch: A new switch on top or on the bottom of the WiFi network list, which allows you to filter all encrypted networks. Useful when you are searching for an open WiFi network
? “Known Network List”: Gives you a list of all networks you’ve ever been connected too, including their passwords, which you can access from the WiFi Settings.
? “Remove RSSI Limit”: Removes the signal strength limit set by Apple. This allows you to see networks which farther away and connect to them if the signal is not too weak.
? “Show network encryption”: Shows the encryption (WPA2, WPA, WEP, None) of each network.
? “Show network MAC Address”: Shows the MAC Address of the network’s base station
? “Show exact signal strength”: Shows the exact signal strength in dBm for each network

In addition, a “Smart Passcode Lock” feature allows the disabling of your passcode when connected to specified networks. BetterWiFi7 decides whether you are connected to a “trusted” network by comparing the networks MAC-Address (which is unique per Network) and not by checking its name/SSID, which is not unique (“dlink” for example).

  • Verizon to Begin Throttling Unlimited LTE Data Plans in October

Verizon has throttled unlimited 3G data plans for years now, but now the carrier has plans to do the same with 4G LTE. Beginning October 1st, Verizon will throttle unlimited 4G LTE data customers if they meet all of the following criteria:

? You have an unlimited data plan
? Your data usage falls within the top 5% of all Verizon customers. Currently that threshold is 4.7GB
? You have completed your contract term (you’re a month-to-month customer)
? You are in an area that is experiencing high demand

Verizon is quick to note that it is not technically throttling customers. Instead it is ‘implementing network optimization practices.’ Verizon says that unlike throttling, you’re speeds under network optimization will only be reduced if you are connected to a cell site that is under a heavy load (and your usage is already in the top 5%).

  • Alleged iPhone 6 Logic Board Surfaces, Will Reportedly Feature NFC and 802.11ac Wi-Fi

Blog Nowwhereelse.fr has received photos of what it claims to be the logic board for the iPhone 6. The site describes the source as ‘particularly reliable,’ but as always, we cannot confirm the authenticity of the pictures.

The logic board looks similar to the iPhone 5s, with one exception being that the top piece bracket is much longer than previous generations., indicating significant internal design changes. It has even been noted that this leaked logic board matches up perfectly with the rear shell/casing leaks we have already seen for the iPhone 6.

The source also claims that Apple’s next generation iPhone 6 will be referenced internally as N61, and will feature NFC and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. We’ve already heard of rumors for both NFC and 802.11ac Wi-Fi, however we cannot confirm the existence of such features on the logic board from the photos that surfaced today.

  • Apple Acquired BookLamp Startup Back in April for $10-$15 Million

Apple acquired BookLamp, the Idaho based startup that is the ‘Pandora for books’, back in April. A source close to the deal says Apple purchased the company for anywhere from $10 to $15 million. The service mysteriously disappeared back in April.

“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

BookLamp’s Book Genome Project was its most popular product, which would recommend books to users based on an analysis of the text and previous ratings of other books. Apple could implement BookLamp’s technology to help improve iBooks with better search, recommendations and more.

  • U.S. House of Representatives Passes Bill That Will Make Cell Phone Unlocking Legal

The House on Friday unanimously passed legislation will make cell phone unlocking legal, just one week after the Senate approved the same measure. The bill now goes to the White House for signature.

The Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, brought by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) reinstates the rule that would allow consumers to use their device on other networks by unlocking their device — whether on their own or by a third-party service. Unfortunately, similar to the House Bill that was passed a few months ago, it does not permanently legalize cell phone unlocking, however it does require the Library of Congress to put a temporary exemption back in place while it decides whether or not to extend it for renewal.

The legislation approved by the House Friday, which the Senate unanimously approved last week, reinstates a 2010 rulemaking by the Librarian of Congress so that consumers can transfer, or “unlock,” their cell phones without running afoul of copyright laws. It also directs the Librarian of Congress to consider whether other wireless devices, like tablets, should be eligible for unlocking.

  • Bose Sues Apple's Beats Over Noise-Cancelling Headphone Patents

Bose has sued Beats, a company which Apple has agreed to acquire, over its noise-cancelling headphone patents. The company has also filed a complaint in the U.S. International Trade Commission against Beats, and others, asserting infringement of the same patents.

Bose says for almost 50 years it has made significant investment in the research, development, engineering, and design of proprietary technologies now implemented in its products, such as noise cancelling headphones.

The company’s noise cancelling headphones are protected by numerous patents. It’s latest noise cancelling headphones model, the QC20, is protected by at least 27 U.S. patents and applications (14 patents and 13 pending applications).

  • Leaked Photo of iPhone 6 Battery Reveals 1810 mAh Capacity?

A photo of the iPhone 6 battery has allegedly been leaked online, revealing a capacity of 1810 mAh, reports NoWhereElse.

The image corroborates a previous report which said the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 would have a 1800 to 1900 mAh battery. This is better than the 1570 mAh battery of the iPhone 5s; however, the larger screen may negate the increased capacity.

The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 is said to feature a 2500 mAh battery. You can follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or RSS for updates.

  • iPhone 6 to Feature New 13MP Sony Exmor Camera Sensor?

Apple will use a new 13MP Sony Exmor camera sensor in the iPhone 6, according to a Digi-Wo report via GforGames.

Apple will allegedly adopt a new shooter for the iPhone 6, namely the Sony Exmor IMX220. Apparently this new unit boasts 13 MP and a 1/2.3? sensor and is capable of recording 1080p videos (3840 x 1080 resolution sampling). The source of this new rumor has a great track record when it comes to Sony related rumors, so we’d file this under “there is a chance it might happen”.

  • United States Senate Passes Bill that Will Make Unlocking iPhones Legal Again

The United States Senate has passed a bill that legalizes cell phone unlocking after a similar bill was passed in the House of Representatives back in February.

Back in October of 2013 the Library of Congress ruled that unlocking iPhones purchased after January 2013 would be illegal. Many petitioned this new rule and pressured lawmakers to do something about the ruling. Eventually President Obama and even the new FCC Chairman urgedCongress to pass laws that make cell phone unlocking (including the iPhone) legal.

The Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, brought by Sen. One of our Apple sources has let us know that the company is currently planning on making iOS 8 beta 4 available to developers and testing partners on Monday, July 21st.

BGR has a decent track record with guessing iOS beta releases, however sometimes they can be off by a day or two. Nevertheless, we still expect the fourth beta of iOS 8 to be released sometime around then.

  • BlackBerry is Finally Getting a Digital Personal Assistant

BlackBerry has announced that its finally bringing a digital personal assistant dubbed ‘BlackBerry Assistant’ to BlackBerry 10.3.

BlackBerry Assistant helps manage simple tasks from searching email and calendar, to finding what’s trending on Twitter, to sending calendar invites. The more it’s used, the more it adapts to the user.

The more I speak with it, the more tuned-in to my queries it gets. If you’ve had experience with other smartphone-based personal assistants, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how accurate BlackBerry Assistant is at recognizing your requests.

  • Morgan Stanley Predicts Apple Could Sell Up to 60 Million iWatches in Its First Year

Morgan Stanley has issued a new investor note increasing Apple’s price target to $110. If Apple reaches $110 it would be an all-time high for shares of the company.

Analyst Katy Huberty also notes that Apple’s iWatch will perform very well due to the ‘halo effect’ which initially helped drive iPod customers to the Mac platform. She also says that current smart watch sales should not be used as a predictor for how a product from Apple might fare; rather, investors should look at how Apple successfully managed to sell new product categories to existing customers in the past.

She sees a range of 30 million to 60 million “iWatch” units being sold in the first 12 months of availability. Her models assume an average selling price of $300 and gross margins between 40 percent and 50 percent. She noted that historically, investors have underestimated sales of new Apple product categories based on the limited success of established products. For example, investors originally compared the iPod to the Sony Walkman, the iPhone to BlackBerry, and the iPad to netbooks, she said.

  • Woman Tragically Killed By Subway Train After Fumbling With iPad and Falling Onto the Tracks

A woman was tragically killed by a subway train at Union Square on Saturday after fumbling to catch a dropped iPad and falling on the tracks, reports the New York Post.

Aracelis Ayuso, 21, was waiting for a Brooklyn-bound No. 4 train when she lost her grip on the tablet around 3:30 p.m., cops said. When the East Harlem resident tried to catch the device, she apparently lost her footing, causing her to tumble forward and land on the tracks just as the train was coming.

The conductor was able to spot Ayuso but was unable to stop the train in time. Police originally believed that Ayuso may have been intoxicated; however, on Sunday they said that there were no obvious signs she’d been drinking. A toxicology report is still pending.

  • Production Issues Could Delay 5.5-Inch iPhone 6 Until Late 2014 or Even 2015

Apple is facing production issues with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 which could delay the device until late 2014 or even 2015, reports KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

We think the 5.5-inch model will also have issues with the yield rate of in-cell touch panel and color unevenness of metal casing. Indeed, these problems will likely be even more complicated with a larger size. In addition, from a technical perspective, we don’t expect sapphire cover, used for the first time on the 5.5-inch model, will easily pass the drop test near term.

We are conservative about 5.5-inch iPhone launching by end-2014. Even if the product is launched in 2014, it is likely to take place after mid-4Q14, which is later than the September-October of consensus, with shipments being lower than consensus of 15- 20mn units.

  • Saurik on 'Competition vs. Community'

Jay Freeman, the developer of Cydia, has posted a lengthy article explaining the background behind Cydia, his motivations to work on the project, and how he looks at competition. The post follows the announcement of the new iMods installer app.

So, some people are going to hate me for this post, and I’ve said some of this before, but I really want to express it in more detail. I’ve been wanting to write something like this for a long time, and recently I think I’ve been in a mindset where I need to think through some of these thoughts anyway, so “here goes nothing”.

  • New Apple iBeacon Device Hits the FCC

Apple has received a grant of equipment authorization from the FCC for a new Apple iBeacon device. The FCC application was dated July 2, 2014 and approved July 4,2014.

Introduced in iOS 7, iBeacon is a technology that enables new location awareness possibilities for apps. Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), a device with iBeacon technology can be used to establish a region around an object. This allows an iOS device to determine when it has entered or left the region, along with an estimation of proximity to a beacon. Currently, even Apple is using third party Bluetooth beacons in its retail stores; however, it appears as though it has finally developed its own beacon.

The FCC filing reveals a circular device about 5.46″ in diameter. It features a USB port and an ON/OFF switch. The official product number of the iBeacon is A1573.

  • E-LABEL Act Aims to Remove Unsightly FCC Labels From Phones, Other Electronics

U.S. Senators Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) and Jay Rockefeller (D-W.V.) have introduced bipartisan legislation to modernize federal regulations for electronic devices. The E-LABEL Act would ease certain regulatory requirements on manufacturers of products such as phones, computers, and other electronics, by giving them the option to meet the physical label requirement digitally.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) currently requires most device manufacturers to etch or otherwise permanently place regulatory information and symbols on the exterior of approved products. As electronic devices in the marketplace become smaller, physical label requirements may become increasingly difficult to meet and more costly for manufacturers. The e-label option promises to lower costs for both producers and consumers.

“As manufacturers continue to produce groundbreaking technologies, it only makes sense that federal labeling requirements for these products are updated to further promote innovation and create new opportunities in the digital age,” said Fischer. “I’m pleased to work with Chairman Rockefeller to introduce the E-LABEL Act, which increases options and lowers costs for manufacturers while also making regulatory information more easily accessible to consumers. This bipartisan measure will provide relief for job creators, benefit consumers, and promote modern regulations that better suit a 21st century marketplace.”

  • Colorful iWatch Concept With Wireless Charging Base [Video]

Check out this new iWatch concept from SET Solution that features interchangeable bands in a variety of colors and a box that is also a wireless charging base.

We’ve thought that everyone should customize the iWatch: color is the keyword! Our iWatch has the possibility to change the wristlet, so you can choose the one with your favorite color! And obviously, there are tons of cool and stylish colors!

We also designed a box for our iWatch concept: the particularity of it is that it is also a wireless charging base! How does it work? Inductive charging (also known as “wireless charging”) uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects. When the iWatch is placed on his PowerCase, a “handshake” happens between the charging surface and the device, and the energy is transferred wirelessly to the iWatch.

  • Apple is Ordering an Unprecedented First Batch of 68 Million iPhone 6 Units

Apple is reportedly ordering iPhone 6 units at an unprecedented level with the company’s first batch numbering at least 68 million units, according to Taiwan’s Business Weekly. Business Weekly now estimates that the first iPhone 6 batch / order will be of at least 68 million units. Furthermore, the device(s) will allegedly enter mass production in July. Foxconn and Pegatron’s chairmen, Terry Gou and Tung Tsu-hsien respectively, have supposedly been notified by Apple in regards to the production plan since the second week of June.

Yesterday, video and photos of an allegedly ‘real’ iPhone rear shell surfaced. Check those out here. We’re expecting the company to release the iPhone 6 in September.

  • Adoption of OS X Yosemite Preview is 4X Greater Than OS X Mavericks Preview [Chart]

Adoption of the OS X Yosemite Developer Preview is four times higher than the adoption of the OS X Mavericks Developer Preview was, reports Chitika.

To determine adoption levels, Chitika Insights sampled hundreds of millions of North American OS X online ad impressions. They looked at data from June 2 and July 2, 2014 for Yosemite and June 10 and Jul 10, 2013 for Mavericks. The data points were plotted on a three-day rolling average.

In the three days following the release of the first OS X Yosemite Developer Preview, adoption jumped significantly – hitting 0.15% of total U.S. and Canadian Mac OS X Web traffic. That figure is particularly impressive considering that adoption of the OS X Mavericks Developer Preview achieved only a 0.05% share after 30 days. The increased level of aggregate activity for Yosemite is likely partially driven by the prominent changes present in this OS version fueling a higher degree of developer curiosity and experimentation. The changes to Safari in particular may be prompting a greater amount of Web usage from current users in terms of testing and customization.

A new report from Parks Associates reveals that Roku is the most used media streaming device in the United States. It accounts for 46% of media player purchases compared to 26% for the Apple TV.

Roku is also the most-used streaming media player in the U.S. Among U.S. broadband households with a streaming media player, 44% use a Roku player the most versus 26% that use Apple TV the most. The gap has widened since 2013, when 37% of streaming media player owners used Roku most and 24% used Apple TV most.

“Multiple factors have allowed Roku to outpace Apple in U.S. sales and usage,” said Barbara Kraus, director, research, Parks Associates. “Roku has always had a close association with Netflix, the largest source of video downloads, and currently offers more than 1,700 channel apps as well as a choice of models with different features and price points, all of which appeal to consumers’ purchasing instincts. With Amazon entering this CE category, there will be renewed pressure on all players to develop the best combination of ‘can’t miss’ content with a simple and intuitive interface. “

  • Video Allegedly Shows Sapphire Crystal iPhone 6 Front Panel Being Bent [Watch]

Sonny Dickson has posted a new video clip which allegedly shows a sapphire crystal iPhone 6 front panel being bent without breaking.

The video doesn’t offer any proof that the front panel is made from sapphire crystal; however, it’s widely been rumored that Apple will switch to the material for its added strength.

A report from last month predicted that Apple’s Mesa sapphire operations will produce enough supply to cover the iWatch, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6. Although, a conflicting report said only the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 would get sapphire crystal.

  • Foxconn to Deploy 'Foxbot' Robots to Help Assemble Apple iPhone

At Hon Hai’s annual shareholder meeting, CEO Terry Gou revealed that the company has entered the final testing stage of a Foxconn robot factory that would substitute robots for production workers. Once operational, Apple will be the first company to use the service, reports ITHome.

Apple in the first quarter of fiscal year 2014 sold about 43.7 million units iPhone, Foxconn, which makes Apple became the biggest customer. If this project is completed, then you do not need to use Foxconn workers to assemble the device, each robot can be responsible for an average of 30,000 devices. Gou said the robot named “Foxbots”, and said they would not sell these robots, because they themselves had not enough.

Foxconn will apparently deploy at least 10,000 Foxbots per Foxconn factory, and each robot will cost 20,000 to 25,000 U.S. dollars.

  • On-Demand Music Streaming Up 42% Over Last Year, Digital Track Sales Down 13%

A new report from Nielsen SoundScan and Nielsen BDS reveals that music streaming is gaining popularity as digital sales drop. The report looked at data for December 30, 2013 through June 29, 2014. Nielsen SoundScan measures U.S. point-of-sale of recorded music product. Nielsen BDS tracks U.S. radio airplay and music streams.

For the first six months of 2014, sales of albums are down 14.9% vs. the first six months of 2013. Vinyl Album Sales and On-Demand streaming continues to show strong gains – Vinyl LP sales are up 40.4% and overall On-Demand streaming up 42% over last year, with on-demand audio up 50.1% and on-demand video up 35.2%.

“With On-Demand streams surpassing 70 billion songs in the first six months of 2014, streaming continues to be an increasingly significant portion of the music industry,” says David Bakula, SVP Nielsen Entertainment. “Streaming’s 42% year-over-year growth and Vinyl LP’s 40% increase over last year’s record-setting pace shows interest in buying and consuming music continues to be robust, with two very distinct segments of the industry expanding substantially.”

  • Apple to Announce iPhone 6 on September 15th, Release on September 25th?

A new report from China.com citing ‘inside sources’ claims that Apple will announce the iPhone 6 on September 15th and it will go on sale September 25th. GforGames notes that the source suggests China will be among the first countries to the device, leaving some possibility for a U.S. launch on September 19th as previously rumored.

This new report indicates that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will go on sale in China for 5,288 yuan, which roughly translates into $850. This comes in line with an earlier report which stated that the 32GB model will sell for the exact same price. Currently, the 16GB iPhone 5S is priced the same, in China. Moving on to the 5.5 inch model, which will allegedly be called the “iPhone Air”, the report says that the smartphone will hit the shelves alongside a price tag of 5,998 yuan, or $965.

  • Microsoft Reportedly Working on iOS Compatible Fitness Band

Earlier last year we reported that Microsoft was working on a smart watch. Today, Windows blogger Paul Thurrott claims that Microsoft’s wearable is actually a fitness band that will work with multiple platforms.

My sources tell me instead that Microsoft will this fall release a Samsung Gear Fit-like fitness band that will display smart phone-based notifications, just like the current and rumored watches and other wearables. So that’s the first bit of rumor busting: It’s a wristband, not a watch. (Yes, I’m sure you’ll be able to see the time on its screen. But the form factor is a wristband.

Microsoft’s fitness band will reportedly have the ability to sync with multiple platforms including Windows Phone, Android and iOS. Samsung wearables only work with Samsung devices and Android wearables only work with Android devices — but it seems Microsoft is taking an alternative route and having its wearable work with all platforms.

Also, the antenna breaks found in all the mockups allegedly aren’t part of the final design.

  • Average Smartphone User Spends 30.25 Hrs Using 26.8 Apps Per Month [Charts]

New data from Nielsen shows that U.S. Android and iPhone users age 18 and over spend 65 percent more time each month using apps than they did just two years ago.

In Q4 2013, they spent 30 hours, 15 minutes using apps, a full half-day more than 18 hours, 18 minutes in Q4 2011. The average number of apps used per month, however, only increased slightly from 23.2 in Q4 2011 to 26.5 during the same period in 2012 and 26.8 apps per month in Q4 2013.

Smartphone owners ages 25-44 use the greatest number of apps per month (29 apps, on average), but 18-24 year-olds spend the most time on them (37 hours, 6 minutes). Social networking and search apps are still the most used. People spent nearly 11 hours per month, on average, accessing these apps. Entertainment viewing, including video, audio, and gaming apps, grew 71 percent among mobile users year over year.

  • Support for Legacy .Mac and .Me AIM Accounts Ends For Macs Running OS X 10.7.1 or Earlier

Support for legacy .Mac and .Me AIM accounts has ended for Macs Running OS X 10.7.1 or earlier, according to an Apple support document. To be able to use a .Mac or .Me AIM account with Messages, users must update to OS X 10.7.2 or later to achieve this.

To ensure a secure and reliable experience, customers using a mac.com or me.com ID to login to the AIM service via iChat must upgrade their Mac to OS X version 10.7.2 or later by June 30, 2014 to continue using the AIM service.

Reports earlier today claimed that Apple was ending support for all .Mac and .Me accounts, regardless of what OS X version the user was running. However, 9to5mac sources say that this is not necessarily the case, and Apple will continue supporting those accounts as long as customers upgrades to version 10.7.2 or later.

  • Galaxy S5 Failed to Outsell iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c During Its First Month of Sales in the U.K.

The new Samsung Galaxy S5 was the third best selling smartphone in Britain during May, lagging behind its older iPhone 5S and 5C rivals, reports Kantar Worldpanel.

May was the first full month of Galaxy S5 sales since its European release. Despite its blockbuster launch, the Galaxy S5 was only the third highest selling smartphone in Britain behind the iPhone 5s and 5c. However, among those who did buy the Galaxy S5 across the five largest European markets, 17% switched from Apple. Over half, 58%, of European Galaxy S5 buyers were existing Samsung owners.

Across Europe, Android is the number one operating system with 73.3% of the market. Apple comes in second with 16.6% and Windows is third with 8.1%.

  • Analysts Boost Apple Price Targets Ahead of iPhone 6 [Chart]

A majority of analysts have a now set a price target above $100 ($700 pre-split) for Apple’s stock. The new higher targets have followed the company’s aggressive stock repurchase plan and its 7-for-1 stock split.

Analysts are also predicting a hugely profitable iPhone 6 launch. In an investor note posted yesterday, Walter Piecyk notes that Verizon’s new smartphone leasing plans will allow many iPhone owners to upgrade for 0% upfront:

“Historically we estimate that ~20% of AT&T’s subscriber base was eligible for an upgrade during an iPhone launch quarter. That eligibility dropped to a low of the mid-teens in the second half of 2013 due to the stricter upgrade policies. We expect AT&T’s new Mobile Share Value plan to increase the percentage of AT&T post-paid subscriber base eligible to upgrade to over 65% by the time the next iPhone launches. In absolute terms that is the difference between 10 or 11 million eligible for upgrades and 45-50 million.”
