  • Google's Eric Schmidt: Tim Cook is Wrong, Google is More Secure Than Apple [Video]

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt says that Apple CEO Tim Cook’s recent statements on privacy at Google are wrong and that Google’s systems are far more secure than Apple’s in an interview with CNN Money.

Google’s Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg tell Christine Romans why Google is the safest place on the web, and why they hired Sheryl Sandberg without having a job for her.

In regards to Cook’s comments, Schmidt said, “Someone didn’t brief him correctly on Google’s policies. It’s unfortunate for him. In the first place, in Google’s case, we have always been the leader in security and encryption. Our systems are far more secure and encrypted than anyone including Apple. They’re catching up, which is great. Aside from the fact that we show ads in Gmail which we’ve done for a decade and we use that information for nothing, all the things he implied we’re doing, we don’t do.”

  • New Mac.BackDoor.iWorm Threat Has Infected Over 18,500 Macs

Doctor Web has discovered a new threat to Mac OS X dubbed Mac.BackDoor.iWorm. The complex malicious program has already infected over 18,500 Macs which can now be used by criminals to carry out various instructions.

During installation the malware is extracted into /Library/Application Support/JavaW, after which the dropper generates a p-list file so that the backdoor is launched automatically. It’s configuration is saved in a separate file and then the program reads /Library to find out which application it won’t be interacting with. If no ‘unwanted’ directories are found, it determines the home directory, checks to see if its configuration file is in the directory and then writes the data it needs to run into the file.

When running, iWorm opens a port on the computer and waits for an incoming connection. Notably, it uses reddit to obtain a list of control servers to connect to.

  • Apple to Release iOS 8.1 With Apple Pay Support on October 20th?

Apple will reportedly release iOS 8.1 and launch Apple Pay on October 20th, according to Bank Innovation.

Sources close to Apple have been confirming that Apple Pay would be attached to iOS 8.1 since the September 9 iPhone event held earlier this month. Sources who spoke to Bank Innovation indicated that the public release of iOS 8.1 will be in sometime in October and may have improvements for other Apple services. Previously, 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman reported that iOS 8 will be adding major improvements to the Apple Maps app, which hasn’t been added on to the initial (very buggy) release of iOS 8. We expect that the iOS 8.1 release will be timed to the still-unconfirmed October event held by Apple to announce their new iPad devices, as other websites have previously reported and Bank Innovation has heard rumors about, as well.

Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 8.1 to developers for download and testing on September 29th. Developer Hamza Sood managed to unearth Apple Pay settings and privacy information in the beta release.

We’ve posted a new video test comparing the Wi-Fi speeds of the 802.11ac iPhone 6 Plus versus the 802.11n iPhone 5s.

Both devices were freshly restored to iOS 8.0 and connected to the 2013 Apple AirPort Extreme. The router was placed 1.5 metres away from the smartphones and each iPhone was connected to the AirPort Extreme using a 5GHz-only network. No other devices were connected to the wireless network at the time of the test and the downloads were performed at separate times. We cut them together for comparison.

  • Jony Ive Discusses Steve Jobs, Apple Watch in Rare Vogue Interview

Vogue published a new interview with Jony Ive, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Design, highlighting his work with the company. Vogue editor Robert Sullivan sat down with Ive weeks before Apple unveiled the Apple Watch and even got a chance to see the product.

Ive first discussed his connection with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and how the two “just clicked.”

Five years later, a disenchanted Ive was about to leave when Jobs returned to reboot the then-floundering Apple, which happened, by most analyses, when Jobs enabled Ive. By Ive’s account, the two hit it off immediately. “It was literally the meeting showing him what we’d worked on,” Ive says, “and we just clicked.” Ive talks about feeling a little apart, like Jobs. “When you feel that the way you interpret the world is fairly idiosyncratic, you can feel somewhat ostracized and lonely”—big laugh here—“and I think that we both perceived the world in the same way.”

  • The iPhone 5c Was the Best Selling Smartphone in the U.K Ahead of the iPhone 6 Launch

The iPhone 5c was the best selling smartphone in the U.K ahead of the launch of the iPhone 6, reports Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

Historically in the month before a new iPhone is released we see a drop in sales share for Apple as users hold out for the new model. However, Apple has managed to limit the drop this year with its share of sales dipping just 1.6 percentage points versus July this year – almost half the equivalent drop seen in 2013 ahead of the iPhone 5 launch. This has in part been achieved through focusing on the iPhone 5c which tends to attract a slightly less tech savvy buyer who will be less likely to be holding off for the iPhone 6. The iPhone 5c was the best selling phone in Britain in August with 8.9% share, outselling the flagship iPhone 5s with 7.6% and the Samsung Galaxy S5 with 6.0%.

Kantar notes that out of the 13.3 million iPhone owners in the U.K., some 4 million are ready for an upgrade. Before the iPhone 6 unveiling, 85% of owners indicated that they would buy another iPhone at upgrade time.

  • Apple Announces Record First Weekend iPhone 6 Sales of Over 10 Million

  • Black Market Takes Over the iPhone 6 Lines [Video]

Filmmaker Casey Neistat has posted a new video entitled ‘Black Market Takes Over the iPhone 6 Lines’ which offers a closer look at the lineup for the iPhone 6 in NYC.

It appears that many in line paid to be there by a middle man who takes the iPhones from users after they leave the store and likely sends them to China or other countries for sale on the black market.

It’s thought that the situation this year is worsened by the delay in the approval of Apple’s new smartphones for China.

  • Chipworks Takes a Look Inside the iPhone 6's A8 Processor, NFC Chip, iSight Camera, More

Chipworks has posted a look inside the iPhone 6’s chips and components, revealing that the A8 processor is likely fabbed by TSMC.

The die size is 8.5 mm x 10.5 mm = 89.25 mm2, as stated by Apple. Indications are that it is fabbed by TSMC, but we don’t have enough images yet to be 100% sure. The first cross section of the structure shows that there are ten metals in the stack (see the third thumbnail image above). We can tell you that the contacted gate pitch is ~90 nm, which agrees with our report on the Qualcomm MDM9235, also fabbed by TSMC in their 20 nm process.

  • Apple Used Its Own CDN to Help Deliver iOS 8

Apple used its own content-delivery network (CDN) to help deliver the iOS 8 update to its users on Wednesday, reports Deepfield.

Aside from all the new features that may be in iOS 8 for the users, there was one other big change that happened this time: Apple chose to deliver a significant portion of the traffic themselves. Most users do not care who or what delivers their updates or data, they just care that the system works. However for large ISP networks that have to process this increase in traffic, they do care. They need to be able to plan for significant changes in traffic volumes and a jump of 10x for anything is a lot to handle.

Previously, Apple relied on Akamai and other CDNs to deliver most of their network traffic. However, this time they handled much of the load themselves marking a new era for the company.

  • Apple Configurator 1.6 Released for Mac

Apple Configurator 1.6, an update to the tool for mass configuration and deployment of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices, has been released for Mac.

Three simple workflows let you prepare new iOS devices for immediate distribution, supervise devices that need to maintain a standard configuration, and assign devices to users. Quickly update your devices simultaneously to the latest version of iOS, configure settings, and install apps and data for your students, employees, or patrons.

Apple Configurator can be used by larger organizations and businesses to set up new devices, install enterprise apps, and enroll each device with a Mobile Device Management solution for remote management by an IT administrator. It is perfect for the classroom or student lab where devices need to be quickly refreshed and kept up to date with the correct settings, approved policies, apps and data. Apple Configurator can also be used to personalize devices with data and documents for specific users.
