  • Analyst: iPad Sales to Drop Drastically in Q1 2015, iPad Pro Production to Be Delayed Until Q2 2015

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that iPad sales will drop drastically in Q1 2015 and that production of the rumored iPad Pro won’t start until Q2 2015.

“We forecast iPad shipments will fall 54.5% QoQ to 9.8mn units in 1Q15, given a lack of new applications, tablet market saturation and slow season.”

“We believe that, in a major shift, while Apple (US) used to be able to use new form factor designs to boost demand, it has failed to do so this time around. The lighter and thinner iPad Air 2 will face strong headwinds in increasing sales in 1Q15, we believe; we also hold that this means that iPad, along with the entire tablet market, is faced with structural challenges characterized by a lack of new applications and market saturation. We don’t think these challenges will be easily overcome by upgraded specs, new form factor designs or lower prices.”

  • A8X GPU in iPad Air 2 Features Semi-Custom 8 Cluster Series6XT Design [Image]

New information reveals that the Apple A8X GPU found in the iPad Air 2 features an unusual semi-custom 8 cluster Series6XT design, reports AnandTech.

Taking a look at a die shot of the GPU provided by ChipWorks, the site was able to identify eight GPU clusters. Notably, the layout looks a lot like that of the GX6450 with another GX6450 placed right above it.

Since Imagination doesn’t have an official eight cluster Series6XT GPU design, AnandTech believes that Apple is modifying Imagination’s designs to fit their needs.

  • iPad Air 2 Teardown Reveals A8X Processor, 2GB of RAM, Smaller Battery [Photos]

iFixit has posted a teardown of the new iPad Air 2.

What’s lighter than Air? An Air 2. Join us live as we disassemble the new, shaved-down iPad Air 2, and see whether Apple’s thinnest device is still its least-repairable.

    Highlights:
    ? Fully laminated, 9.7″ IPS Multi-Touch LCD with a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution at 264 ppi and antireflective coating
? A8X 64-bit CPU (rumored to be a triple-core, 1.5 GHz SoC) paired with 2 GB RAM and M8 motion coprocessor
    ? iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi is model number A1566.
? The iPad Air 2 is thinner than the original iPad Air and the iPhone 6, and it doesn’t have a camera bump.
? Dual mic moves closer to iSight camera, mute switch is gone.
? The glued-down display remains the iPad’s only access point, so there’s still a risk of damaging it even when performing ordinary repairs.
? Wi-Fi model’s antennas are now at the top of the iPad
? Replacing Lightning connect requires replacing the entire logic board.
? 27.62 Wh battery down from the previous Air’s 32.9 Wh capacity.

CNN Money is reporting that some Bank of America customers are getting double charged when using Apple Pay.

I was among the first people to try out Apple Pay the moment it came available on Monday. • Microsoft to Launch a Wearable Device Within Weeks?

Microsoft is reportedly planning to launch a wearable device within the next few weeks, reports Forbes.

The gadget is a smart watch that will passively track a wearer’s heart rate and work across different mobile platforms. It will also boast a battery life of more than two days of regular use, sources close to the project say.

This would give the device over twice the battery life of current smartwatches like the Galaxy Gear and the Moto 360.

  • Apple Wants to Relaunch Beats Music With a Lower Subscription Price

Apple wants to relaunch Beats Music with a lower subscription price and it’s asking labels to cut the price in half, reports Re/code.

The logic of Apple’s argument, relayed by people who’ve heard the pitch secondhand: Apple’s best iTunes buyers spend about $60 a year on downloaded music — $5 a month. So if subscription services dropped that low, any download buyers that switched over to the streaming model would generate just as much revenue for the music labels. And, more important, the market of potential subscribers would get much larger.

Re/code doesn’t believe that labels will get on board with a 50% price cut; even though, Spotify has just negotiated such a deal for additional family members. However, its likely that they would consider a smaller cut. Perhaps to $8/month.

  • Apple Launches iCloud Photos Beta Web Client Ahead of iOS 8.1 Release

Apple has launched a web version of iCloud Photos Beta ahead of iOS 8.1’s release tomorrow. Currently, the web version of iCloud Photos Beta is limited to developers running iOS 8.1.

The current web portal looks similar to the current Photos app found in iOS. You can select multiple photos to either delete or download them, and you can individually favorite, download or delete images as well.

iCloud Photo Library was first unveiled at WWDC, and will let you access any photo you’ve taken from any device. The images are stored at full resolution in their original formats, including RAW files. iCloud Photo Library will also be able to automatically keep your original high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and leave behind lightweight versions on your devices. Edits that you make to photos are automatically synchronized across devices if you have iCloud Photo Library enabled. The edits are non-destructive and you can return to the original version if you want.

  • Apple Stops Selling Bose Headphones and Speakers

Apple has stopped selling Bose speakers, headphones, and other accessories in its online and retail stores (via 9to5). We first reported that Apple would be removing all Bose products from its stores last week, and it seems Apple has finally pulled the plug.

We’ve contacted several retail stores, and they too have confirmed that Apple has removed all Bose products form its Point of Sale (POS) system, meaning this change is likely permanent and there is no way to sell any Bose product.

Bose and Beats were in a patent suit over noise cancellation, but that was recently settled.

  • Snapchat to Begin Rolling Out Advertisements this Weekend

Snapchat will begin adverting in its popular photo messaging application, according to the company. The ads will be the first for the company, which reportedly turned down a $3 billion offer from Facebook last year.

Snapchat notes that the ads will be placed in the “Recent Updates” tab, and will be removed after you view it, or within 24 hours. It notes that it has no plans to place advertisements in your personal snaps or chats, as that “would be rude.” Snapchat says it doesn’t want its ads to be “creepy” or “targeted” like most advertising these days.

This weekend we’re placing an advertisement in “Recent Updates” for Snapchatters in the United States. It’s the first time we’ve done anything like this because it’s the first time we’ve been paid to put content in that space. It’s going to feel a little weird at first, but we’re taking the plunge.

  • Apple to Temporarily Remove Blood Glucose Tracking From Health App

Apple has announced that it will temporarily remove Blood Glucose tracking from the iOS 8 Health app after an issue was discovered with manually entering values.

The Health app lets you manually enter and view blood glucose values in mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter). This unit of measurement is used by a number of countries, while some other countries use mmol/L (millimoles per liter). HealthKit supports both units of measurement. However, if you measure your blood glucose using a device that displays mmol/L, those values can’t be manually entered or displayed in the Health app with that unit of measurement.

Apple’s solution is to remove the ability to manually enter values via the Health app until an update is released that supports both types of measurements.

  • Police Use Find My iPhone to Locate Missing Woman After Her Car Plunges Down a Ravine

California Highway Patrol officers managed to locate a missing woman whose vehicle had plunged 500 feet down a ravine using Find My iPhone, reports ABC News. 28-year-old Melissa Vasquez had been ejected from her car and been missing for 17 hours when found by officers.

Sometime after 2 p.m. on Monday, OnStar informed police of crash that ripped two tires off a Chevy Cruze. The service said the car was at Highway 17 and Camden Avenue, near Vasquez’ home. Officers responded but did not see an accident. OnStar then updated the location to downtown San Jose. Again, police found nothing. At 3 a.m. Vasquez’s stepmother called police to report her daughter missing.

Campbell police Officer David Cameron went to Vasquez’s house and found her iPad. He realized that he could use Find My iPhone to possibly track her location; however, there was a passcode on the device.

  • HBO to Offer a Stand-Alone HBO Streaming Service in 2015

HBO today announced that it will offer a stand-alone streaming service in 2015. This means that subscribers would be able to access HBO content without having a cable subscription. This advancement could also be beneficial to the Apple TV, perhaps bringing it a step closer to becoming a real substitute for cable TV.

Speaking at the Time Warner Inc. Investor Meeting today, Richard Plepler, chairman and CEO, HBO, announced that the company will offer a stand-alone HBO streaming service in 2015. Following a portion of his presentation focused on HBO’s domestic business, during which he cited significant growth opportunities inside the pay-TV universe, Plepler then turned to the current ten million broadband-only homes, which is projected to grow.

“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO,” said Plepler. “So, in 2015, we will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States. We will work with our current partners. And, we will explore models with new partners. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”
