  • Apple Tops Fortune's 2014 List of World's Most Admired Companies [Chart]

Apple topped Fortune’s list of the World’s Most Admired Companies in 2014 for the seventh straight time.

    Apple:
    ? Top 50 rank: 1
? Rank in Computers: 1 (Previous rank: 1)
    ? Overall score: 7.94
    ? Ticker:AAPL

    Why it’s admired:
The iconic tech company known for the iPhone and other stylish and user-friendly products is back in the top spot on this year’s list, for the seventh year in a row. Apple, the most valuable brand on the planet according to Interbrand, brought in $171 billion in revenues in FY2013 and is flush with cash, but fan boys and girls (not to mention the market) are getting antsy to see its next big product. Bets are on a smartwatch or AppleTV, but the company is also reportedly turning its attention to cars and medical devices. — Erika Fry

  • Leaked Google Smartwatch Prototype by Motorola [Photos]

Photos of an early Google smartwatch prototype made by Motorola have surfaced on AndroidPolice.

We’ve decided to put a few of our cards on the table and give readers a peek at the Motorola prototype that never became a real product. According to our anonymous source, the device was allegedly going by the name Google Watch, with the official code name Gem, and fell into the Nexus category of devices. Whether a future watch will keep the codename Gem is uncertain.

  • David Fincher in Talks to Direct Sony's Steve Jobs Movie

David Fincher, director of the Social Network, is in talks to direct Sony’s Steve Jobs movie that will be based on the Walter Isaacson biography, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The movie is being written by Aaron Sorkin who also wrote the Social Network.

Fincher is in early talks to helm the untitled film based on Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the Apple co-founder, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. If a deal comes together, the film would reunite the director with Oscar-winning Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin, who recently finished the adaptation, and Social Network producer Scott Rudin. Mark Gordon and Guymon Casady also are producing.

Fincher is reportedly a picky director who can go years between film projects. He last directed The Girl With the Dragon Tattooin 2011 and recently finished shooting Gone Girl. Fincher is also the executive producer of House of Cards.

  • iPhone 6 Rumored to Arrive Much Sooner Than Expected

The iPhone 6 may arrive much sooner than expected, according to Mizuho Securities analyst Abhey Lamba.

The analyst says checks in Asia and Japan indicate that a July launch is possible but it’s still a bit early to be certain. However, supply chain vendors are getting ready for an earlier production ramp up than prior years.

“Recently, the company has been introducing new lineup in September time frame whereas the next generation phones could come out in July this year,” he said. “The earlier launch will be helpful for Apple as it will ensure significant availability and distribution of the new device during the holiday season.”

  • Basis Has Spoken to Apple About a Potential Sale

Basis Science, the company that makes the Basis Health Tracker Watch, is on the market, according to a TechCrunch report.

The company has reportedly spoken to Google, Apple, and possibly Microsoft and Samsung, about a potential sale.

The price we’ve heard for any possible activity is “sub-hundred million,” which could mean a small return for investors like Norwest Venture Partners, Mayfield Fund and Intel Capital, who have poured over $30 million into the company. The alternative to an acquisition for Basis would be a long-sought-after C round of funding, say those people.

  • Apple iWatch to Predict If You're About to Have a Heart Attack?

Apple’s upcoming iWatch may predict if you’re about to have a heart attack, according to The Chronicle.

Tomlinson Holman, who Apple reportedly hired in 2011 to “provide audio direction”, is a renowned audio engineer who invented THX and 10.2 surround sound. Holman has apparently been working on sensor technology to predict heart attacks by studying the sound blood makes as it flows through arteries.

Apple is exploring ways to measure noise “turbulence” as it applies to blood flow. The company wants to develop software and sensors that can predict heart attacks by identifying the sound blood makes as it tries to move through an artery clogged with plaque, the source said.

  • Apple to Release Updated iPad Air This Year, No New iPad Mini or 12.9-Inch iPad Until 2015?

Apple will reportedly release a new iPad Air this year but will hold off on updating the iPad mini or releasing a larger 12.9-inch iPad until 2015, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The new iPad Air would feature an A8 processor and Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

Compared with lower-margin iPad mini with Retina display, which shipments has been tepid, higher-margin iPad Air was a hot selling item in 4Q13, which will slow Apple in developing new iPad mini models. We believe Apple plans to launch upgraded iPad Air early this year, and will accelerate development of 12.9” iPad. As such, more resources will be allocated to these two products, which will affect the progress of the development of new iPad mini. All told, we think chances of the debut of a new iPad mini in 2H14 are slim. In addition, the 12.9” iPad is unlikely to be offered in 2014. For these reasons, we predict the only new iPad product in 2H14 will be the upgraded iPad Air.

Kuo believes the 12.9-inch iPad will allow developers to create more interactive apps thanks to its larger screen size. However, Apple is reportedly focusing its energy on the iWatch which will be released this year.

  • Toshiba Announces 5TB Air-Filled Hard Drive

Toshiba has announced the launch of nearline enterprise capacity HDDs with a 5TB recording capacity, the industry’s largest for models that are not filled with helium gas.

The new series uses 1TB/platter (max) magnetic disks to realize a capacity of 5TB and achieve an internal data transfer rate of 205MiB/s, 24% faster than Toshiba’s current models, MG03SCA400 and MG03ACA400 (4TB, 165MiB/s). The series is engineered for the high-capacity demands of mid-tier servers and cloud application workloads, and for capacity-optimized data center storage systems that benefit from high capacity per spindle.

System builders have the option of selecting a Sanitize Devise Feature set function for each model, which makes it possible to invalidate important data recorded on the magnetic disks at a blink. The series also provides, as an option, persistent write cache technologies that help protect against data-loss in the event of sudden power loss.

  • Steve Jobs' Lisa Mouse Recovered From 30-Year-Old Time Capsule

In 1983, Steve Jobs gave a talk at the Aspen International Design Conference discussing various technologies and used his Lisa mouse to navigate through the presentation. After the talk, Jobs and other conference attendees donated various items to a Time Capsule that would be buried as the ‘Aspen Time Tube’

Jobs decided to donate the mouse he used during the presentation to the time capsule, and as a result, it became known as the ‘Steve Jobs Time Capsule.’ Organizers and attendees looked forward to one day excavating the Time Capsule, but unfortunately it was lost after a major landscaping project went underway near the burial location.

The National Geographic TV Show Diggers got together a group to track down and unearthed the time capsule in an Aspen field which was supposed to be dug up in 2000. They eventually found in last September.

  • iOS, Android Accounted for Nearly 96% of All Smartphone Shipments in Fourth Quarter of 2013

Android and iOS accounted for 95.7% of all smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2013, a 4.5% jump from the same period a year ago. Android held 78.1% of market share for 4Q13 shipments, while 17.6% shipments went to iOS.

The smartphone market passed an important milestone in 2013 when worldwide shipments surpassed the 1 billion mark for the first time, driven by continued momentum from Android and iOS. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Android and iOS accounted for 95.7% of all smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2013 (4Q13), and for 93.8% of all smartphone shipments for the year. This marked a 4.5-point increase from the 91.2% share that the two platforms shared in 4Q12, and a 6.1-point increase from the 87.7% share they had in 2012

“Clearly, there was strong end-user demand for both Android and iOS products during the quarter and the year,” says Ramon Llamas, Research Manager with IDC’s Mobile Phone team. “What stands out are the different routes Android and Apple took to meet this demand. Android relied on its long list of OEM partners, a broad and deep collection of devices, and price points that appealed to nearly every market segment. Apple’s iOS, on the other hand, relied on nearly the opposite approach: a limited selection of Apple-only devices, whose prices trended higher than most. Despite these differences, both platforms found a warm reception to their respective user experiences and selection of mobile applications.”
