  • Alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 Rear Shell Surfaces in New Video

Japanese blog Mac Otakara published a video today that shows the purported iPhone 6 rear shell for the 4.7-inch model alongside an iPhone 5s and other iPhone 6 mockups. We have seen photos of the alleged shell, but this is the first time we’ve seen a video.

The shell is thinner than the iPhone 5s’ and has the correct cutouts for the volume buttons, silent switch and the relocated sleep/wake button. There is a cutout for the Apple logo, which we believe is likely part of the manufacturing process; however, there’s a small possibility that Apple could use the logo as a notification indicator.

The next generation iPhone 6 is rumored to launch in both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes, however the 5.5-inch model may receive exclusive features such as optical image stabilization and 128GB of storage. The device is rumored to feature a 1704 x 960 resolution display bringing a higher pixel density, as well as an A8 processor, an improved camera, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and an all new design with rounded corners with a relocated sleep/wake button.

  • Apple to Release iOS 8 Beta 3 on July 8?

Apple is reportedly planning to release the third beta of iOS 8 on July 8, according to BGR, making it approximately three weeks from the previous beta 2 seed. Apple usually likes to release the first few betas every two weeks or so, until it gradually shifts into three week intervals as the testing phase progresses.

Apple’s iOS 8 software is moving along the usual path to general consumer release later this fall, with new beta versions being made available to developers for testing approximately every two weeks. Unfortunately, we have learned from trusted sources that iOS 8 beta 3 won’t be released to developers until Tuesday, July 8th. This would mean a three-week gap between when iOS 8 beta 2 was released on June 17th, and beta 3?s release.

BGR does have a good track record when it comes to iOS firmware releases, especially beta seeds. Many have reported iOS 8 Beta 2 to be buggier than the first release, so we’ll see how beta 3 does.

  • Only the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Will Get 128GB of Storage?

Earlier today it was reported that Apple would be launching the iPhone 6 September 19 in 32 and 64gb variants, and the 16gb model would presumably be dropped. However many wondered if Apple would release a 128GB version of the iPhone as a new capacity. Now chinese news site Wei Feng is claiming that a 128GB version will indeed be launching, however it will be limited to the 5.5-inch model.

The site says that offering a 128GB version that is exclusive to the 5.5-inch iPhone will give customers the true “phablet” experience allowing them to store many files, documents and data. That means that the 4.7-inch model would only launch with two storage tiers — 32GB and 64GB. Currently Apple only offers 128GB of storage for iPads and only 64GB for iPhones/iPod Touches.

Apple’s next generation iPhone launch is shaping up to be an exciting one as the company is rumored to launch two iPhones with larger screens (4.7-inch and 5.5-inch). The device is rumored to feature a 1704 x 960 resolution display bringing a higher pixel density, as well as an A8 processor, an improved camera, NFC, optical image stabilization 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and an all new design with rounded corners with a relocated sleep/wake button.

  • (Product) RED Thanks Apple For Their Contributions, Clarifies Comments Made by Bono at Cannes Lions

(Product) RED has thanked Apple for the $75 million the company has donated to fight AIDS in a blog post today. Back in April the charity announced that Apple’s contributions had reached $70 million. RED also addressed the comments made by U2’s Bono at the Cannes Lions festival last week. Bono took a jab at Apple’s quiet involvement in the charity while Jony Ive was on stage.

“One of the reasons it’s such a credit to have Jony Ive on the stage,” Bono told panel moderator and Vice CEO Shane Smith, “is because Apple is so fucking annoyingly quiet about the fact they’ve raised $75 million. Nobody knows!”

Bono went so far as to stand up, pull out an official (Red) iPad cover and remove the device, illustrating to the audience that the only actual nod to the nonprofit was inside the cover and therefore always obscured by the tablet.

  • iOS 7's Activation Lock Feature Has Helped Reduce iPhone Theft in Some Cities

iPhone theft has been rising for years now; however, police in New York, San Francisco and London say that they’re finally starting to see a dip in thefts of the popular smartphone. Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman believes the decline in iPhone theft is thanks to Apple’s Activation Lock feature that debuted with iOS 7 last September.

Police officers in San Francisco and London say that after Apple introduced its measure, called Activation Lock, last fall, iPhone theft fell significantly. Comparing data in the six months before and after Apple released the feature, the police said iPhone robberies in San Francisco dropped 38 percent, and those in London fell 24 percent.

The police in New York said that robberies involving Apple products dropped 19 percent and those involving grand larcenies dropped 29 percent in the first five months of 2014, compared with the same time period from 2013.

  • T-Mobile Offers Free Unlimited Music Streaming, Announces New unRadio Service

At its Uncarrier 5 event T-Mobile decided to also hold a surprise ‘Uncarrier 6’ event that focused on music. T-Mobile customers can now stream an unlimited amount of Pandora, Rhapsody, iHeartRadio, iTunes Radio, Slacker, Spotify, Samsung Milk and Beatport without it counting against their data cap. Currently, you can only stream an unlimited amount of music from the select services listed above, but T-Mobile is asking customers to let them know which other services they would like to see included.

“As a committed music freak, I’m personally outraged at the way the other guys are using the music you love to lure you into over-priced plans with sweet ‘promotional offers’ that quickly roll into higher prices or trigger those absurd overage charges,” said T-Mobile CEO and President John Legere. “Music should be free of all that. Music should have no limits. So, beginning right now, you can stream all you want at T-Mobile from all of the top music services – data charges do not apply.”

“Our competitors want you to believe that Internet radio is still free on their networks – but it’s not,” said Mike Sievert, Chief Marketing Officer for T-Mobile. “On AT&T and Verizon, you’re paying for every note of every song you stream. You even pay for the ads. Our goal with Music Freedom is different. We want people to enjoy their music worry-free – the way it’s meant to be.”

  • Sharp Announces New 'Free-Form Display' That Can Be Made In Any Shape

Sharp has announced the development of a ‘Free-Form Display’, a revolutionary advancement that enables the creation of new display designs to match a variety of applications.

LCDs have contributed to the emergence and spread of a range of application products by offering not just display-related functions such as high brightness, wide viewing angle, high resolution, and superb color purity, but also by providing added value through, for example, greater environmental performance and a superior user interface thanks to touch-panel functions. In addition, LCD application product manufacturers want to offer consumers products with a more polished design, and Sharp has responded by providing these manufacturers with displays that boast features like slim profiles, light weight, and thin bezels.

Continuing on this tradition of innovation, Sharp announces the development of the Free-Form Display, a device that can be shaped to meet a wide range of user needs thanks to the incorporation of IGZO technology and proprietary circuit design methods. Conventional displays are rectangular because they require a minimal width for the bezel in order to accommodate the drive circuit, called the gate driver, around the perimeter of the screen’s display area. With the Free-Form Display, the gate driver’s function is dispersed throughout the pixels on the display area. This allows the bezel to be shrunk considerably, and it gives the freedom to design the LCD to match whatever shape the display area of the screen needs to be.

  • Apple TV to Likely Gain Continuity Feature This Fall

Yesterday Apple released Firmware 7.0 Beta 1 for the Apple TV, as well as iOS 8 beta 2 and Yosemite Developer Preview 2. Developers running the latest betas have noticed a popup on their notification center in Yosemite indicating that an Apple TV is now Available for Continuity.

The notification only occurs when the Apple TV and Mac are running on the same WiFi network which hints that Apple is working on ways for Yosemite to interact with Apple TVs. Unfortunately, Continuity with Apple TV has not been outlined by Apple, and the latest developer previews of the software hint at no ways the feature will be used.

  • Recently Leaked iPhone 6 Photos are Allegedly Authentic, Device to Feature QHD Display?

Recently leaked images from Jimmy Lin, a Taiwanese media star and race car driver, are allegedly of an ‘authentic’ iPhone 6 prototype, according to SteveNotes via GforGames.

According to the source who has cited “Apple employees” from Hong Kong, the unit used by Jimmy Lin to tease us is an authentic iPhone 6 Beta device. How could these employees be certain? Well, based on these fresh reports, Apple has recently shipped iPhone 6 Beta units, for testing purposes, to its various facilities around the world, including Hong Kong. More so, the tricky bit is that, according to the sources, each sample unit can be easily identified by a set of unique particularities, reason why the handset hasn’t already been leaked more extensively via other sources.

The same source claims that the iPhone 6 will feature a QHD display; however, it’s unclear if the source was referring to the rumored 4.7-inch or 5.5-inch iPhone. Quad HD features four times more pixels that 720p (1280×720) with a resolution of 2560×1440.

  • NYT Posts Extensive Profile on Tim Cook

The New York Times has posted an extensive profile on Apple CEO Tim Cook revealing some details about his past and his management style at the company.

Some highlights include comments from employees on Cook’s role in the development of the rumored iWatch.

Lower-level employees praise Mr. Cook’s approachability and intellect. But some say he is less hands-on in developing products than his predecessor. They point to the development of the so-called iWatch — the “smartwatch” that Apple observers are eagerly awaiting as the next world-beating gadget. Mr. Cook is less involved in the minutiae of product engineering for the watch, and has instead delegated those duties to members of his executive cabinet, including Mr. Ive, according to people involved in the project, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to press.

  • Microsoft Considers Bringing Cortana Personal Assistant to iOS

Microsoft is considering the idea of bringing its new Cortana personal assistant to iOS and Android, reports SearchEngineLand.

Marcus Ash, a Windows Phone Group Program Manager, discussed the idea at the SMX Advanced conference in Seattle. The company wants Cortana to be ‘pervasive’ not just at a country/geographic level but at a tech level across different devices and perhaps different platforms.

We want to scale Cortana internationally and across devices. The Android/iOS question is interesting. We’re asking, would Cortana be as effective if she didn’t have access to the details on your phone? We’re still trying to get Cortana adopted on Windows Phone and figure out what it wants to become there. But we’re actively talking about this.

  • Google to Challenge Apple's HealthKit With 'Google Fit'

Google is reportedly planning to launch a new health service called Google Fit which will collect and aggregate data from fitness trackers and health-related apps. The company is expected to launch the service at its Google I/O conference on June 25th and 26th, says Forbes.

The service would be a direct challenge to Apple’s new HealthKit framework which aggregates data from wearable devices and apps. It also rivals Samsung’s ‘Sami’ platform which does the same.

Google Fit will aggregate data through open APIs, instruction sets that allow apps to share information, and will also announce partnerships with wearable device makers at its I/O conference, Forbes understands. One source with knowledge of Google’s plans said Google Fit would allow a wearable device that measures data like steps or heart rate to interface with Google’s cloud-based services, and become part of the Google Fit ecosystem. Google could not be reached for comment at the time of writing.

  • iOS 8 Randomizes Your MAC Address When Searching for Wi-Fi to Prevent Location Tracking

iOS 8 has made a nice little change in the way it protects your privacy from marketers by randomizing your MAC address when scanning for Wi-Fi networks.

When you’re out and about with your Wi-Fi turned on, you’re actually broadcasting your MAC address to retailers, government agencies, marketing agencies and more — even if you never connect to the wireless network. Firms can use that unique MAC address, along with video surveillance footage to learn your shopping habits and effectively track your location while you’re in the range of the basestation.

With iOS 8, Apple now randomizes/spoofs your MAC address while you broadcast your Wi-Fi signal, disguising you from marketers and other firms as they are unable to tell who is who. Once you connect to a wireless network, then your device provides the real MAC address.

  • Why Maps Didn’t Get Major Improvements With iOS 8

Apple’s iOS 8 was supposed to bring big changes and improvements to the Maps app —including public transit data, more reliable data, better POI data and more. Many were surprised at WWDC when little to no changes were announced for the Maps application aside from vectro-based maps in China. A source familiar with the situation claims that the lack of improvements was due to the departure of many developers, poor management, and ‘internal politics’ that ultimately caused project to suffer.

Many developers left the company, no map improvements planned for iOS 8 release were finished in time. Mostly it was failure of project managers and engineering project managers, tasks were very badly planned, developers had to switch multiple times from project to project.

Another source corroborated much of what was said by the first tipster.

  • Dr. Dre Described as Perfectionist and Workaholic, Similar to Steve Jobs

Dr. Dre (Andre Young) joined Apple a few weeks ago after the company acquired Beats music. Throughout post-deal interviews and talks, Jimmy Iovine, Beats Music’s co-founder did most of the talking to the press; however, a recent Wall Street Journal profile offers a behind the scenes look at the important role Dr. Dre plays.

Behind the scenes, Dr. Dre—whose real name is Andre Young —has quietly played an equally powerful role developing and protecting the Beats brand, eschewing market research for gut instinct at every turn. Though his main obsession is perfecting the sound of the company’s signature high-end headphones, the 49-year-old fitness-obsessed music producer weighs in decisively on everything from TV ads and font styles to the wordiness of descriptions on the Beats Music streaming service.

A colleague says that Dr. Dre serves as Beats’ “cultural barometer” of what is cool. His process is called mysterious and his assessments are usually immediate, personal, and articulated sparely. He apparently dismisses ideas such as posing for clichéd photos in a recording studio as too “corny” or “cheesy.” Or, he may wave off ideas he doesn’t like with a terse “I’m not feeling that.”

  • Scientists Develop Shatterproof Smartphone Screens

Scientists have developed a new shatterproof smartphone screen that could end the cracking/shattering of smartphone displays including the iPhone.

University of Akron polymer scientists have discovered that by adding a fully transparent layer of electrodes to a polymer surface will result in a more durable and flexible surface. This could revolutionize and replace the conventional touchscreens that we see on most smartphones today. Currently the smartphones on the market use coating of indium tin oxide (ITO) and are more brittle and more likely to shatter.

“These two pronounced factors drive the need to substitute ITO with a cost-effective and flexible conductive transparent film,” Zhu says, adding that the new film provides the same degree of transparency as ITO, yet offers greater conductivity. The novel film retains its shape and functionality after tests in which it has been bent 1,000 times. Due to its flexibility, the transparent electrode can be fabricated in economical, mass-quantity rolls.

  • Apple Retail Stores Could Soon Offer Prepaid and Month-to-Month iPhone Plans

In an effort to help boost iPhone sales in its own retail stores, Apple is planning on soon offering pre-paid and month-to-month plans in its United State retail stores, according to 9to5mac. The plans would be offered to customers who when purchasing a full-priced, unlocked iPhone, rather than signing a two-year agreement.

If someone wanted to get a month-to-month service today, they would have to buy the iPhone at the Apple store, then go to a local carrier and setup their service with the device. However, that could all change if Apple offers the service directly through the Apple Store. Apple will be patterning with AT&T and T-Mobile for this new initiative.

Apple Stores will soon stock up on AT&T GoPhone pre-paid activation kits and SIM cards, and stores will use the existing T-Mobile SIM cards for customers that will choose T-Mobile pre-paid plans. Apple will begin training its store employees on the new pre-paid and month-to-month iPhone sales practices in the coming weeks. Sales staff will promote AT&T’s $60 per month pre-paid plan (with 2.5GB of internet data and unlimited talk and text) to those seeking AT&T plans, while the stores will offer $50/month (1GB LTE data) and $70/month (5GB LTE data) unlimited data plans to customers seeking T-Mobile devices. The activations must be done at the time of purchase in Apple Stores and those devices will be unable to be returned to Apple for a refund.
