  • iPhone 6 Predicted to Get 128GB of Storage, Programmable Power Button, No Sapphire Cover Lens

A new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo offers some details on the iPhone 6 that Apple is expected to unveil next week. Kuo says Apple is planning to unveil both a 4.7-inch model and a 5.5-inch model and both will have a 128GB storage option. This corroborates a recently leaked document which listed storage sizes of 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB.

A new power button on the side of the device will reportedly be programmable, perhaps allowing users to launch a specific app in response to a preassigned action. The smartphone is also expected to have a barometer to measure altitude or forecast weather. The protruding camera will allegedly lose its sapphire coating to make it more resistant to drops.

Key spec forecasts – No sapphire cover lens, 128GB, built-in barometer pressure sensor & programmable power key

  • Analyst: iWatch to Come in Two Different Screen Sizes, Offer 8GB of Storage and 512 MB RAM

KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo released a report today with his updated expectations on Apple’s rumored wearable product. Kuo see’s Apple releasing an iWatch with two different screen sizes — 1.3-inches and 1.5-inches. Kuo also believes the iWatch will pack 8GB of internal storage with 512 MB of RAM.

While 8GB of internal storage and 512 MB of RAM seem low compared to iOS devices (which have 1GB of ram and 16GB storage), the specs are on the high-end for a smart watch. Some believe the iWatch could act independently from an iOS device, and Kuo’s analysis falls in-line with that speculation.

Kuo is somewhat unsure about the casing for the device, but believes we will see 2-4 different types, with aluminum being the primary element used. He also sees the device will be rectangular in shape and feature ‘holes’ to measure vital signs such as heart rate.

  • Jonathan Ive on Apple's Upcoming iWatch: 'Switzerland is in Trouble'

Jonathan Ive has reportedly been heard saying that Switzerland is in trouble when excitedly talking about the iWatch. The tidbit was relayed by Nick Bilton for the New York Times.

According to a designer who works at Apple, Jonathan Ive, Apple’s design chief, in bragging about how cool he thought the iWatch was shaping up to be, gleefully said Switzerland is in trouble — though he chose a much bolder term for “trouble” to express how he thought the watchmaking nation might be in a tough predicament when Apple’s watch comes out.

Apple is expected to unveil the wearable device on September 9th; however, analysts are predicting that it won’t ship until 2015.

Apple has reached an agreement with American Express for its iPhone payments system, according to Re/code.

  • Video Shows How Easy it is to Steal ATM Pin Codes with an iPhone [Watch]

Stealing ATM Pins and passcode could get easier for thieves, thanks to infrared technology. As Mark Rober points out in his video below, thieves can simply purchase a thermal imaging (infrared) attachment and with their iPhone, steal any code input from a keypad which was previously used for entry.

The infrared camera shows a thermal signature left by your fingers when you type codes at ATM keypads, door entries and more. All a thief has to do is scan their camera right after you enter the code to see which keys have recently been used. Since the heat signature fades with time, you can even see the order which the keys were pressed. The ‘hotter’ keys were likely pressed last while the ‘dimmer’ keys were likely pressed first.

A study at UC San Diego shows that it is possible to guess the correct code 80% of the time if the image was taken immediately after. If the image was taken 1 minute later, there still was a 50/50 change of guessing the correct code.

  • Apple is Reportedly Considering a Price of $400 for the iWatch

According to a new report form Recode, Apple has considered pricing the iWatch at $400, with cheaper models planned.

Apple executives have discussed charging around $400 for the company’s new wearable device. Pricing has yet to be finalized for the forthcoming product, which is expected to begin shipping next year. Sources say consumers should expect a range of prices for different models including lower priced versions.

The report does note that it is still unclear whether or not Apple will announce a price for the product on September 9. Recent reports indicated that the watch would not ship until 2015. Just like the original iPhone, the product may not ship until months later in an effort to keep the device a secret before its reveal.

  • More Evidence Points Towards 4.7-inch iPhone 6 with 1334 x 750 Resolution Display

Yesterday, a video of an alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 that booted up and was assembled from leaked parts surfaced. The video showed the alleged iPhone 6 booting up to the Connect to iTunes recovery display screen as well as iTunes recognizing the device. After further examination of the display, developer Steven Troughton-Smith notes that 4.7-inch iPhone 6 shown in the video is most likely equipped with a 1334 x 750 display.

A 1334 x 750 display on the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 would results in 326 PPI (pixels per inch) — the same amount as current iPhones with retina displays. This finding corroborates Daring Fireball’s John Gruber assessment that the 4.7-inch model would pack a 1334?×?750 display while the 5.5-inch model would feature a 2208?×?1242 resolution display with 461 PPI.

MacRumors did an analysis of the the Connect to iTunes screen and found that a 1334 x 750 resolution display was likely.

  • Alleged iPhone 6 Logic Board Reveals New Category 4 LTE Modem [Photo]

An iPhone 6 logic board complete with chips was leaked today and one by one the components are being identified. Despite some of the text being blurred, MacRumors has identified the modem which will likely be used for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6.

While photos posted to reveal the existence of an NFC chip from NXP has seen identifying marks on many of the other components blurred, a portion of the text printed on the LTE modem is visible, confirming the board does indeed contain Qualcomm’s MDM9625M as had been previously rumored.

The Qualcomm MDM9625M modem is a Category 4 LTE modem which means that it will support speeds of up to 150 Mbps. The modem in the iPhone 5s is a Category 3 modem which only supports speeds of up to 100 Mbps.

  • 16GB of Flash Storage Spotted on Alleged iPhone 6 Logic Board

A 16GB flash storage module has been spotted on the recently leaked logic board for the iPhone 6, reports MacRumors.

A new set of photos from Feld & Volk and Sonny Dickson today that revealed the NFC chip present on the logic board of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 also offers a good look at the flash storage module on this board. Based on the Toshiba part number, as seen on similar modules, the “7” indicates that this is a 16 GB module, suggesting the low-end iPhone 6 will continue to offer that amount of storage.

The discovery is in line with a previously leaked schematic and table that showed part numbers for the phone’s various memory options. Notably, only 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB sizes are were the list, the 32GB variant is strangely is missing.

  • Purported A8 Chip Reveals iPhone 6 Will Have 1GB of RAM

Today photos of the iPhone 6 logic board featuring an A8 processor surfaced online. Looking closer at the chip it can be determined that Apple’s next generation smartphone will likely have 1GB of RAM.

MacRumors forum member commander.data spotted a part number on the A8 revealsing that the package-on-package contains Hynix RAM.

Based on Hynix’s part number format, the character in the eighth position reveals the amount of RAM in the package, with an “8” denoting 8 Gb (1 GB) and a “B” denoting 16 Gb (2 GB). While it is a bit difficult to read the part number clearly given the distance and angle in the photo, our staff and several posters in our forum agree that the character very much appears to be an “8”, indicating 1 GB of RAM.

  • Analyst: All 5.5-Inch iPhones 6s and Some 4.7-Inch iPhone 6s Will Get Sapphire Cover Screens

Analyst Matt Margolis has learned that all 5.5-inch iPhone 6 models will get sapphire cover screens but only some 4.7-inch iPhone 6 models will come with sapphire. Margolis made the claims in an investor note seen by 9to5Mac.

According to sources close to Foxconn’s manufacturing operations the iPhone 6 will come built with sapphire cover screens in both sizes. These sources have also indicated that the 4.7” Phone 6 is being assembled in two varieties, a sapphire cover screen version and a version featuring Gorilla Glass. At this point I do not know the approximate mix between the two cover screen options on the 4.7” iPhone 6. My latest check on the 5.5” iPhone 6 indicates that all units of the device are expected to come protected by a sapphire cover screen at this point …

Margolis expects both the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 to be unveiled in September; however, the larger model is said to launch in October. A new report claims that Apple will also unveil the iWatch at its September 9th event.

  • Apple iPhone 6 to Feature Its Own Payment Platform, Utilize NFC?

A new report from Wired says that Apple will finally take action on the mobile payments front with its next generation iPhone featuring its own payment platform. The solution will apparently utilize NFC as previous rumors have suggested.

While Apple’s exact implementation is still unclear at this point, we can still make some general idea of what it will look like. The company has made a huge push to get its Bluetooth LE-transmitting iBeacons into retailers across the country. And because Apple did not spend a great deal of time expounding on iBeacons at WWDC this year, it’s possible they could be a greater focus at Apple’s September media event—as a part of its mobile payment solution. Touch ID will also likely play a role in securing the platform, and it could make sense for Passbook, Apple’s hub for tickets and coupons, to get some level of integration with the service too.

Apple has over 800 million credit cards on file already putting it in a perfect position to launch a payments platform. The Information says that conversations between Apple and payment companies have heated up recently and that Apple’s solution will have a “so-called secure element” to store user’s confidential financial information.

  • Purported iPhone 6 Parts Show Improved Speaker and New Vibrator Motor Design

More purported iPhone 6 parts have surfaced today, showing off sim card trays, touch ID home buttons, a rear embedded Apple Logo, an improved speaker and a new vibrator motor design.

The sim card trays and touch ID home buttons hint that Apple will be using the same colors as the iPhone 5s for the iPhone 6, including space gray, white/silver and white/gold. The images show a slightly curved sim card try, indicating that it was designed for the iPhone 6’s new curved design. You can also see the Touch ID home button ring colors, which match the sim card trays.

In addition, we see the embedded Apple logo, which has previously surfaced. Apple has not used an embedded Apple logo on the iPhone since the original launch in 2007. However it has used embedded Apple logo’s on certain iPad devices.

  • Location for NFC Chip Spotted on Leaked iPhone 6 Logic Boards?

Following a leaked schematic allegedly for a NFC chip that will be used by the iPhone 6, it appears a location for the chip has been spotted on purported logic boards for both the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models.

MacRumors forum member chrmjenkins notes that the alleged NFP chip (PN65) measures 5mmx5mm with 32 terminals. After examining leaked photos of the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 logic boards, he believes he’s determined a location for the chip.

The location on the board is a square patch that does not correspond to any component from the iPhone 5s logic board, indicating that it may indeed be for a new component such as an NFC chip. Existing components may of course see changes in shape between generations, but many of the current major components can be mapped reasonably well to locations on the iPhone 6 logic boards, leaving relatively few candidates for this new square patch.

  • Apple Will Reportedly Announce a Wearable Device and Two Next Generation iPhones in September!

Earlier reports said that Apple would be announcing its iWatch, or wearable product, sometime in October. Despite many analyst reports predicting that the product has been delayed, John Paczkowski of Re/code is now saying that Apple will announce a new wearable device alongside two next generation iPhones on September 9th.

Remember back in June when I said Apple hoped to schedule a special event in October to show off a new wearable device? Remember how I also said this: “Could things change between now and fall? That’s certainly possible.” Turns out that was a prescient hedge, because things have changed. Apple now plans to unveil a new wearable alongside the two next-generation iPhones we told you the company will debut on September 9th

Paczkowski has a great track record when it comes to Apple events. He was the one who also reported September 9th as the date for Apple’s big event.

  • T-Mobile Quadruples Simple Starter LTE Data for Extra $5/Month

T-Mobile has announced a new option for its Simple Starter customers that quadruples their data to 2GB for an $5/month.

Back in May, the Un-carrier made waves with the Simple Starter plan, an entry-level solution with unlimited talk and text, and 500 MB of LTE data for just $40. Starting September 3, these customers can get a whopping 2 GB of LTE data for only $5 extra per month – and still no annual service contract and no domestic overages.

“People who use loads of data use T-Mobile,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “And it’s no wonder. The old guard telecoms punish people for using more data on their networks with crazy overage charges and fees. Get Verizon’s $50 plan and use just one gig more data, and the price jumps to $65. It’s crazy. At T-Mobile, we designed our network data-strong so our customers could use the hell out of it. And that’s just what they’re doing.”

T-Mobile also recently announced that its offering a free year of unlimited LTE data to customers who switch from Sprint, AT&T, or Verizon and to the person that referred them.

  • Schematics Reveal New iPhone M7 Coprocessor Codenamed 'Phosphorus'?

The iPhone 6 will come with a new coprocessor codenamed ‘Phosphorus’, according to schematics leaked by GeekBar via GforGames.

Allegedly, the chip will have the same responsibilities as the M7 CPU, but given the wider functionality of the new HealthKit, it will also be responsible for collecting and processing new types of health-related data, including the heart rate, the amount of calories burned, cholesterol levels, blood sugar and more. In the Health app, the aforementioned data can be added either manually, or can be automatically collected from various accessories and wearables (and this is were this new coprocessor will probably come into play).

In collecting health data, Apple may face privacy and regulatory challenges.Reportedly, Apple wants to ensure that providers, not itself, are responsible for adhering to privacy requirements. More details on that here.

Following reports that iMessage accounts for over 30% of all mobile spam, BlackBerry has posted an article entitled, ‘Why BBM Isn’t Vulnerable to iMessage’s Reported Spam Problem’.

Here’s the company’s five reasons why BBM is better than iMessage for preventing spam:

    —–
    1) BBM is architected in a way that protects our 85 million users against spammers. iMessage works off of phone number or Apple ID. Anyone who has your number or Apple ID can send you messages whether you want them to or not. With BBM, users have a lot more control due to our “invite and accept” paradigm. In other words, both parties need to be mutually committed to being contacts in order to send and receive messages.

  • China Telecom Advertises Plans to Sell Unlocked iPhone 6

China Telecom briefly posted an ad showing a rendering of an iPhone 6, with plans to sell an unlocked version of the device that will work with all carriers in the country. China Telecom said it would unlock the unreleased iPhone 6, meaning the device would support 4G LTE (both TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE) and other networks including WCDMA, CDMA2000, GSM, and CDMA1X.

Current iPhones sold by China Telecom only accept SIM cards issued by the carrier because the devices only support the carrier’s CDMA2000 and 2G CDMA network. With China Telecom unlocking the device, subscribers can use LTE and put China Telecom in a position to compete with other carriers in the region. This news also indicates that Apple could be making a single version of each iPhone model for the Chinese market.

China Telecom has since deleted the post from their Weibo account.

  • iWatch to Begin Production in September, May Not Hit Shelves Until 2015

Apple has notified component suppliers that they will need to begin delivering hardware to assembly locations as early as next month, according to China’s United Daily News via GforGames. The assembly process is reportedly set to commence in September and will only yield a million iWatches a month.

In addition, once the components will hit the conveyor belts, it’s estimated that it will take between 1 and 2 months before the final product will be ready. That being said, Apple’s supply chain sources add that the iWatch might arrive a bit too late for a 2014 release date. Either that, or we might see a limited launch that could take place in December.

Notably, a recent report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo corroborates the possibility of a launch delay. Kuo said that difficulty manufacturing the iWatch would likely delay its release until 2015.

  • Leaked Schematic Reveals Apple May Release 128GB iPhone 6

A newly leaked schematic reveals that Apple may release a 128GB iPhone 6. Also, it appears that the 32GB model may get dropped.

GeekBar posted the schematic to Weibo alongside a table which showed part numbers for the phone’s various memory options. While 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB sizes are on the list, 32GB is missing.

According to the chart, the 16GB memory will be supplied by Toshiba and Hynix, the 64GB memory will be supplied by Hynix, Toshiba, and SanDisk, while the larger 128 GB units will come from Toshiba alone. Although the 32GB memory is missing from the list, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Apple has dropped this option. However, its absence is notable.

  • Walmart Discounts iPhone 5c to $0.97, iPhone 5s to $79

Walmart is discounting the iPhone 5c to $0.97 and the iPhone 5s to $79 for the next three months, reports Engadget. The promotion comes ahead of Apple’s expected iPhone 6 announcement on September 9th.

While Apple hasn’t formally announced the iPhone 6 yet, there’s few surer signs of an impending new model than a fire-sale to clear out existing stock. How’s $0.97 sound for an iPhone 5c in that case? For the next 90 days then, Walmart has your ticket and is discounting the colorful 16GB handset by just over $28.

Of course, these prices require a two year contract through AT&T, Sprint, US Cellular and Verizon.

The soldier acted as a human shield when the colonel came under fire from a rogue Afghan soldier with an assault rifle, reports the DailyMail. He returned fire with a rifle and pistol but was shot multiple times. Two bullets hit one of his legs, one bullet tore into his shoulder, and three were stopped by his bulletproof vest.

It’s believed he saved the life of the senior officer as apparently the colonel was not wearing body armor.

  • Analyst: Apple Unlikely to Sell iPhones With Sapphire Displays This Year

J.P. Morgan analyst Rod Hall has issued a note to investors predicting that Apple is unlikely to use sapphire in this year’s iPhones due to prohibited costs associated with producing the material in large quantities.

Hall notes that GT Advanced Technologies has acquired Twin Creeks, a company that uses a wafering process called ‘Hyperion’ that could significantly reduce the cost of building a sapphire screen cover. Apple also has filed its own patents on sapphire laminates that could reduce costs.

In the report, received by AppleInsider, Hall estimated that producing the sapphire displays currently costs about 10 times more than using Corning’s Gorilla Glass. The higher cost is because the Hyperion ion implantation process is apparently not ready for mass production.

  • Leaked Schematic Reveals iPhone 6 Will Only Have 1GB of RAM?

A leaked schematic for the iPhone 6, posted by GeekBar on Weibo, alleged shows that the upcoming smartphone will have 1GB of RAM.

It’s unclear if the schematic is for the 4.7-inch or 5.5-inch iPhone 6. One GB of RAM would be less than the 2 GBs in many flagship Android devices and the same amount of RAM as the iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s.

In a world where flagship Android smartphones come with at least 2 GB of RAM, the iPhone 6 doesn’t sound powerful enough to compete with the most sought-after devices from the opposite camp. Nevertheless, Apple is a wizard when it comes to optimization and iOS has always been capable of successfully handling the same tasks as Android, while requiring fewer resources.

  • iPhone 6 Release Shaping Up to be a Huge Upgrade Cycle

The iPhone 6 release is shaping up to be a massive upgrade cycle for many iPhone owners, according to comScore’s data points.

? 35% of all existing iPhone owners indicate they are likely to upgrade their device in the next six months.
? Those owning any iPhone prior to iPhone 4 have the highest likelihood of upgrading, at 46%.
? iPhone 4S represents the largest segment of iPhone owners at nearly 20 million, 40% of whom indicate they are ready to upgrade.
? iPhone 5C owners show the lowest likelihood of upgrading at 15%, which makes sense given that this model was only introduced to the market in late 2013 and was targeted to consumers at a lower price point.
? Interestingly, even though iPhone 5S owners have the latest and greatest version of the device, 24% of those owners – about 3.6 million in total – are already ready to upgrade.

comScore believes that iPhone 5s upgraders are the most unique as many of them are tech-savy users who want the latest and greatest from Apple. These upgraders are most likely to be a young adult male from an upper-income house, according to comScore’s findings.

  • Pegatron Reportedly Lands Half of Apple's 4.7-Inch iPhone 6 Orders

Pegatron has landed half of Apple’s 4.7-inch iPhone 6 orders, reports DigiTimes. That would suggest the company will supply 25 million units of the next generation smartphone by the end of 2014.

Previously, Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) was said to have landed all of Apple’s new 5.5-inch model orders and 70% of the 4.7-inch model’s orders. However, the latest development shows that the orders for the 4.7-inch models are split evenly between Pegatron and Foxconn, the sources said.

Pegatron’s relationship with Apple has said to have grown tighter recently and the company will likely see impressive results in the fourth quarter. Apple contributes to 35-40% of the Pegatron’s revenues.

  • Purported iPhone 6 Logic Board Appears Fully Assembled

As we approach the rumored iPhone 6 September 9 announcement, we see more and more leaked parts and other iPhone 6 tidbits. Today, the fully assembled logic board surfaced weeks after a similar leak surfaced.

While nothing particularly new is revealed from the leaks, the board does match up to what we have seen from previous leaks, indicating it could be legitimate. The processor is hidden under some shielding, but flex cable connectors, flash storage, the SIM slot and more are visible from the photo.

The iPhone 6 is rumored to launch in 4.7-inch and 5-5.inch screen sizes, however it is unclear which model this logic board was designed for. An A8 processor, improved camera, and 802.11ac are just some of the rumored upgrades the iPhone will receive.

  • Apple Bans Two Hazardous Chemicals From Final Assembly of iPhone, iPad and Macs

Apple is banning two potentially hazardous chemicals from the final assembly of its products. Both benzene and n-hexande will no longer be used for the final assembly of iPhones, iPads, Macs, iPods and more.

Benzene is a carcinogen that can cause leukemia if not handled properly and n-hexane has been linked to nerve damage. Apple conducted a four-month investigation at 22 factories and found no evidence that the chemicals had endangered any of the people that work at the plants. Apple says no traces were found in the 18 plants, while four the 22 plants had ‘acceptable safety levels’ of the chemicals.

Apple is also making all factories to test substances to ensure they do not contain benzene or n-hexane, even if they are not listed as ingredients. While Apple has banned the substances from final assembly of the products, it is still allowing use of the chemicals during early production phases of products. However, it does plan on lowering the maximum amount of benzene and n-hexane that can be used in those phases.

  • Customer Claims Apple Store Employee Gave Him a Receipt With a Homophobic Slur

A Portland Apple Store employee allegedly handed a customer, who self-identifies as queer, a receipt with a homophobic slur, reports The Oregonian. Adam Catanzarite says that he was handed a receipt on July 8th after purchasing EarPods with an email address of “f@g.com”.

Catanzarite took to Facebook to spread the word about his situation, after not being satisfied with the store manager’s response.

So here’s a thing. I got called a f@g by an ?#?Apple? employee here in ?#?Portland?. The store manager did not do what he said he would to rectify the situation, so now I feel it is important to share the story.
Being queer and having worked with queer youth, I know first-hand that this is an example of the type of ?#?homophobic? beliefs and actions that lead young people to harm themselves. This type of action is NOT OKAY, especially from a company that prides itself on being LGBTQ inclusive and welcoming.
My friends, I please ask that you like this status or share it with your networks to let them know that ?#?homophobia? does not have a place in PDX (or anywhere) and that you reconsider where you spend your money. Perhaps the ?#?Applestore? is not so deserving.

  • T-Mobile to Begin Throttling Unlimited Data Customers Who Engage in Peer-to-Peer File Sharing

T-Mobile will beging throttling customers who use their Unlimited LTE data plans for torrents and peer-to-peer file sharing, according to an internal memo to staff.

T-mobile has identified customers who are heavy data users and are engaged in peer-to-peer file sharing, and tethering outside of T-Mobile’s Terms and Conditions (T&C). This results in a negative data network experience for T-Mobile customers. Beginning August 17, T-Mobile will begin to address customers who are conducting activities outside of T-Mobile’s T&Cs.

This memo only applies to those on the older $70 unlimited data plans or the new $80 Simple choice plans, and not towards current plans that have a capped data allowance. If an unlimited data customers is caught abusing the network, T-Mobile will first contact the customer and send a warning. If the misuse still persists, T-Mobile will begin to throttle their speeds.

  • High Resolution Images Show Tapered iPhone 6 Front Panel, Power Button, Mute Switch

Feld & Volk have shared new high resolution images of the iPhone 6 that reveal a tapered front panel, power button, and mute switch, reports MacRumors.

One photo shows the inside of the front panel and display assembly, with some of the components near the top pulled apart to give a good look at how the digitizer/LCD flex cables and earpiece come together with room for the front camera and proximity/ambient light sensors all packed into one small area of the device. Several other photos also highlight how the edges of the front panel taper. Those tapered edges should sit essentially flush with the edges of the rounded rear shell, providing for a sleek, nearly seamless look and feel for the iPhone 6.

There are also close up photos of the power button and mute switch. Feld & Volk say the volume buttons will be of similar design. Notably, the mute switch appears to function slightly different then previous generations pivoting on a pair of internal pins.

  • More iPhone 6 Parts Leak Showing Embedded Apple Logo, External Camera Ring

As the iPhone 6 nears, more and more parts are leaking daily. Today, various iPhone 6 parts have leaked including the rear Apple logo, external camera ring, flex cables, and other smaller parts.

The rear Apple logo shown again corroborates the company’s plans to have an embedded logo rather than a painted on logo. Apple has not used an embedded rear logo since the original iPhone, but it has used it for the iPad. Many initially hoped the rear cutout would be used for a notification light, but that likely will not be the case. Apple.club.tw also got its hands on a handful of Apple logos ready to be fitted on the back of an iPhone 6.

The leaked external camera ring also hints that the iPhone 6 could have a protruding lens, much like the iPod Touch. It is possible for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 to have a flush rear camera, while the 5.5-inch device have am aesthetically questionable protruding lens.

  • New Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Ads Attack MacBook Air [Video]

Microsoft has aired three new Surface Pro 3 ads today targeting the MacBook Air. Microsoft has long attacked Apple’s iPad in its Surface ads, so this is a shift from the company’s usual tactics. The ads tout the Surface Pro 3’s touch screen, detachable keyboard, and its ability to run just about any program. Each ad ends with the tagline “The tablet that can replace your laptop.”

The first ad, Crowded, shows off the Surface Pro 3’s touchscreen and ability to use a pen for handwriting and drawing. It also takes a shot at Apple’s new Powerful iPhone 5s ads at the end of the ad when the MacBook Air user must carry around multiple devices.

Tablet or laptop? With the Surface Pro3, you get the best of both. The Surface Pro 3 has the power to run full Adobe Photoshop, Office and Windows. But unlike the Mac Book Air, it has a touchscreen, a pen and converts to a tablet. Don’t try that with the Mac.

  • Inside Apple's Internal Training Program

The New York Times has posted a profile of ‘Apple University’, the company’s internal training program that introduces employees to Apple’s business culture and educates them about its history.

Steve Jobs created the program back in 2008. It’s highly secretive and rarely written about. Employees are discouraged from talking about it, no pictures have ever surfaced, and Apple refuses to make instructors available to discuss the training.

‘Apple University’ is run year round. The program was designed by Joel Podolny, formerly the dean of the Yale School of Management. Faculty members come from various universities including Yale, Harvard, the University of California, Berkeley, M.I.T., and Stanford.

  • Purported iPhone 6 Front Panel Leaks Again [Photos]

New photos of a purported iPhone 6 front panel have been leaked online by Apple.Club.tw. The images show both sides of the alleged part for the rumored 4.7-inch smartphone.

Recent reports suggest that the iPhone 6 will feature a display cover that is made out of an extremely hard material that’s slightly stronger than Gorilla Glass but not as hard as sapphire. This is in line with leaked front panel videos that showed a very strong part which wasn’t as durable as pure sapphire.

Apple is expected to unveil iPhone 6 on September 9th. It’s still not clear if both a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will be unveiled at the event.

  • FCC Wants Answers From All Major Carriers Regarding Data Throttling Practices

After probing Verizon for its data throttling practices, the FCC is now asking all major mobile carriers to justify data throttling. Verizon first announced that it would be slow down speeds for the top 5% of unlimited 4G LTE data customers starting in October, which had the FCC voicing its concern for the new policy.

In its initial response, Verizon noted that it is doing no wrong in throttling customers. Verizon claimed other carriers like AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile have been doing it for years and “This practice has been widely accepted with little or no controversy.”

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler was not buying Verizon’s response (and neither are we!)

  • Gruber Says Apple Will Announce Its 'Wrist Wearable Thing' Next Month [Update]

John Gruber of Daring Fireball says that Apple will announce its ‘wrist wearable thing’ next month. He made the prediction in a post discussing the Moto 360 design.

It looks like Motorola’s designers tried to draw as much attention as they could to the 360’s stupid flat-tire display shape.

The only way this could get funnier would be if it doesn’t even ship until after Apple announces their wrist wearable thing next month.

  • U.S. Judge Rejects $324.5 Million Settlement Between Apple, Google, Intel and Adobe

Judge Lucy Koh has rejected a proposed settlement that was reached earlier this year between Apple, Google, Intel, and Adobe regarding a class action lawsuit over employee anti-poaching agreements.

The $324.5 million settlement was rejected by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh due to an amount that fell “below the range of reasonableness.” Koh was seeking at least $380 million for damages.

A judge rejected a $324.5 million settlement Friday between tech workers and companies Google, Apple, Intel and Adobe in a lawsuit accusing the firms of conspiring to avoid poaching each other’s employees.

  • Father Stabs Thief to Death After Tracking Him with Find My iPhone

After tracking his son’s stolen iPhone through Find My iPhone, Derek Grant ended up stabbing and killing the thief who robbed his son at knifepoint, in self defense.

Jordan, 20, was initially robbed of his iPhone at knifepoint. He went home and told his dad, Derek Grant, who proceeded to locate the stolen device through Find my iPhone. Grant and his two younger sons aged 16 and 17 confronted Patrick Bradley, a thief who had a significant record for violence.

Grant demanded Bradley hand over the phone but instead Bradley stabbed Grant in the left eye. Grant retaliated by grabbing his own knife he brought for safety and proceeded to stab Bradley multiple times, ultimately killing the robber.

  • iPhone 6 to Feature 802.11ac Wi-Fi, 2.0 GHz A8 Chip, NFC, Improved Touch ID, More

The iPhone 6 will reportedly feature 802.11ac Wi-Fi, a 2.0 GHz A8 processor, NFC, improved Touch ID, and possibly a special chip for authenticating Beats headsets, reports VentureBeat.

Sources tell the site that as rumored a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch model of the iPhone 6 are under development; however, the 4.7-inch version will likely ship first with the larger smartphone shipping weeks or even a month later.

The site believes that the new smartphones will feature a display cover that is made out of an extremely hard material that’s slightly stronger than Gorilla Glass but not as hard as sapphire. This is in line with leaked front panel videos that showed a very strong part which wasn’t as durable as pure sapphire.

  • China Reportedly Bans Government Purchases of Apple Products

China has removed Apple products from the list of eligible items that can be bought with public money due to security concerns, according to Bloomberg.

Ten Apple products including iPad, iPad Mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro were removed from the government procurement list for July. Both the iPads and MacBooks were on the June version of the list. These changes come just weeks after the Chinese state media labeled the iPhone a “national security concern.”

Apple is the latest U.S. technology company to be excluded from Chinese government purchases amid escalating tensions between the countries over claims of hacking and cyberspying. China’s procurement agency told departments to stop buying antivirus software from Symantec Corp. and Kaspersky Lab, while Microsoft Corp. was shut out of a government purchase of energy-efficient computers.

  • Square-Enix Announces Chaos Rings 3 for iOS

Today, Square-Enix announced Chaos Rings 3, the next game in its Chaos Rings series for iOS, Android and PlayStation Vita. The Chaos Rings series is a role-playing video game developed by Media Vision but published be Square-Enix. Chaos Rings II was originally selected as a ‘Best of 2012’ app by Apple.

Details for the new game are a bit scarce, but some initial screenshots provide a little insight, notes TouchArcade:

The first batch of screenshots shows some of the new characters, as well as a battle scene and camp screen with room for up to five characters. Given this is part of the Chaos Rings series, we can probably look forward to certain things like team-based combat, gene collecting, a plot rife with dramatic deaths, and so on, but until Square-Enix says or shows more, it’s all just speculation.

  • 5.5-Inch iPhone 6 to Feature More Powerful Processor Than 4.7-Inch Model?

Cowen & Co. analyst Timothy Arcuri predicts that Apple will equip the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 with a more powerful processor than the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, citing Asian supply chain sources.

AppleInsider notes that Apple has done this before with the iPad. The A7 processor on the iPad Air is clocked at 1.3 GHz; whereas, the A7 processor on the iPad mini with Retina is clocked at 1.29 GHz.

Arcuri also said that the processor in the 5.5-inch model could ship with a larger die, hinting at a more wide-ranging architectural split. A larger die might be a sign that the 5.5-inch model will feature additional on-die silicon, such as a larger array of graphics processing cores. Alternatively, it might suggest that Apple will make the two chips — believed to be the “A8” — in different fabrication plants using different processes.

  • Original BioShock Coming to iOS Later This Summer

The original BioShock first person shooter game will be coming to iOS later this summer. The game originally launched in 2007 on Windows and Xbox platforms, but since then it has been ported to PS3, Mac and other consoles.

Engadget got a sneak peak at the game, and while it noted the gameplay was fine, it did mention the graphics and lighting were cut down ‘dramatically’ and the experience was ‘subpar’ compared to its console versions.

In-game lighting and shadows are cut down pretty dramatically, as are art assets. The grandeur of Rapture is distinctly less grand, which sucks some of the life out of one of my personal favorites. The first thing you’ll notice is “iOS fire.” The game’s opening — a plane crash — puts main character Jack in the ocean surrounded by some hideously ugly fire animations. It’s the first hint that the iOS version of Rapture has been shrunken down to fit within Apple’s app store file size limitation, and it’s a nagging issue that I couldn’t shake in my hands-on time.

  • BlowToUnlock Tweak Lets You Unlock Your iOS Device by Blowing at It

BlowToUnlock is an interesting new tweak that lets you blow at your device to unlock and/or wake it. The tweak uses the microphone on your device to monitor and listen for a sudden noise. Once you blow on your device, you can set it to wake the screen, unlock the device or both.

You can also adjust the sensitivity of the tweak, which gives you the option to blow lighter or heavier to unlock/wake your device. The tweak is not always 100% accurate since ambient noises could impact the tweak’s detection. Adjusting the sensitivity could help those in noisy environments.

We’d imagine this tweak does have an impact on battery life since it constantly monitors the microphone; however, we haven’t used it long enough to know for sure. BlowToUnlock also works with headphones that have a microphone and supports all iOS devices on iOS 7.

  • XBMC Is Now 'Kodi'

XBMC has announced that the popular media center software is being renamed ‘Kodi’.

Since 2002, the software known as XBMC has gone through three namings. First, it was called Xbox Media Player. Upon realizing that it did a bit more than your traditional media player, in 2004 the development team elected to rename it Xbox Media Center. A mere 4 years later in 2008, the team once again elected to rename the software to simply XBMC, given that it had moved on from its original roots on the Xbox. Support for the Xbox was dropped shortly thereafter. Today it’s all happening one last time.

The developers say that the ‘XBMC’ name made little given that the software barely runs on the original Xbox and has never run on the Xbox 360 or Xbox One. Also, it now performs many more functions then your typical media center. Finally, there have been legal issues with the name.

  • Beats Music CEO Ian Rogers to Run iTunes Radio

Beats Music CEO Ian Rogers will oversee iTunes Radio now that Apple’s acquisition of Beats Music and Beats Electronics is complete. iTunes Music was launched back in September and by March it had overtaken Spotify to become the third most popular music streaming service in the United States.

Apple posted a microsite this morning to welcome Beats to the family saying, “Today we are excited to officially welcome Beats Music and Beats Electronics to the Apple family. Music has always held a special place in our hearts, and we’re thrilled to join forces with a group of people who love it as much as we do.”

Rogers, a former Yahoo executive, will run both teams to create cohesion in Apple’s streaming-music options, according to the people familiar with the matter. Pandora and Spotify, the two-biggest streaming music services, each offer both a free ad-supported service and a subscription-based service.

  • President Obama Signs Cell Phone Unlocking Bill Into Law

President Obama has signed the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act into law, after it passed both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate. The bill restores the right for consumers to unlock their cell phones, including the iPhone.

Unfortunately, the bill does not permanently legalize cell phone unlocking, however it does require the Library of Congress to put a temporary exemption back in place while it decides whether or not to extend it for renewal. The bill does give the Library of Congress the power to determine whether or not consumers have the choice to unlock their cell phone, and later next year the copyright office could restore the ban.

Today, President Obama will sign into law the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, and in doing so, will achieve a rare trifecta: a win for American consumers, a win for wireless competition, and an example of democracy at its best — bipartisan congressional action in direct response to a call to action from the American people.
