  • Apple is Still Struggling to Keep Up With iPhone 6 Demand [Chart]

Apple is still struggling to keep up with iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus demand months after launching the new smartphones, reports Piper Jaffray.

Surveys conducted by analyst Gene Munster found that only 56% of core configuration were in stock as of last Friday, December 12th. He believes that availability will improve to 80% by the end of the quarter; however, expectations were that Apple would reach 100% in-stock before the end of December.

Notably, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus availability is actually slightly down from last month when Munster’s survey of 80 Apple Stores found that 58% of models were in-stock on November 14th. In October, only 6% of models were in stock.

  • Apple Airs New Holiday Ad: 'The Song' [Video]

Apple has aired a new holiday ad entitled, ‘The Song’.

With a Mac, iPhone or iPad you have the power to create thoughtful, emotional gifts and memories that transcend time. It could be a movie, a homemade card or a song that brings two generations closer together.

The ad features a girl who comes across a record apparently recorded by her grandmother for her husband when they couldn’t be together for the holidays. She then learns to sing and play the song on her guitar and keyboard. One morning when grandmother comes down to the table, she finds an iPad with headphones and the message, “A Duet. Press Play”. The young girl has re-recorded the song singing and playing alongside the original, bringing her grandmother to tears.

  • Former iTunes Engineer Tells Court Apple Worked to Block Competitors

During an ongoing federal antitrust case Apple is currently facing, a former iTunes engineer testified that he worked on a project that was “intended to block 100% of non-iTunes clients” and “keep out third-party players” that competed with the iPod.

The plaintiffs subpoenaed Rod Schultz, the former engineer, to show that Apple had worked to block any iTunes or iPod competitors. The plaintiffs argue that Apple’s action to hurt competition ultimately rose iPod prices from 2006 to 2009.

Schultz testified in an untucked dress shirt and leather jacket, saying he was an unwilling witness. “I did not want to be talking about” his work on iTunes from 2006-2007, part of which was code-named “Candy,” he said.

  • In-Depth Design Comparison of Apple Maps vs. Google Maps

UX Launchpad has posted an in-depth design comparison of Apple Maps vs. Google Maps on Medium. The post is very extensive and goes through every aspect of the mapping applications to compare and contrast the approaches of two highly skilled teams working on a pretty unique design challenge.

Design is simply “deciding how a thing should be,” as William says in his book. But every decision has a tradeoff. Every thing you make easier can make another thing harder. There is no such thing as “the right design”. But we can learn a lot from seeing how experts in their field weighed the pros and cons of different approaches.

UX Launchpad is a one day, hands-on, fun design course in Seattle. It’s run by Jon Bell, a designer at Twitter, and William Van Hecke, the design lead of the multiple-award-winning Omni Group and author of Learning iOS Design.

  • Apple's Glass Lantern Store Wins Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence

The Institution of Structural Engineers has awarded the Apple’s ‘Glass Lantern’ Zorlu Store with its Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence. The award is granted at the Judges’ discretion to recognize the finest example of structural engineering in a given year.

This latest iteration of structural glass design provides the purest form possible within the limits of current material fabrication. Clear glazed single panel walls with no connections to distract the eye, 10m long by 3m high on four sides, provide an efficient structural form capable of resisting seismic loads, while providing total transparency and architectural purity. The lightweight ultra-thin roof made of CFRP panels (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) seamlessly joined on site, provides a completely smooth uniform soffit while also improving the seismic performance of the whole structure. In such a minimalist project the detailing required particular attention, the result being a total absence of fixings, with the five panels being held together by structural silicone.

“The judges found this to be a supreme example of collaboration between engineer and fabricator to achieve an outstanding, architecturally minimalist structure. The use of single panes of toughened laminated glass to support a lightweight ultra-thin CFRP roof without connections other than structural silicone, takes structural glass technology into a new dimension. A project where only engineering excellence and attention to detail can produce a result of such simplicity and purity of expression.”

  • T-Mobile Introduces Unlimited 4G LTE Family Plan

T-Mobile has announced a new family plan with unlimited 4G LTE data for the entire family and a multi-line family discount. Available today, the Simple Choice family plan starts at $100 per month for two people – and goes all the way up to 10 people for just $40 more per line.

    —–
This holiday season, the traditional carriers are flooding the airwaves with a mishmash of confusing shared data promotions. Between them, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon have 24 different family and promotional rate plans, and, not surprisingly, 81 percent of people recently polled describe all the data promotions in the wireless industry as “somewhat confusing” or “very confusing.” And a full 75 percent say they “hate” policing their own family members’ data usage on the carrier’s shared data plans, while more than 40 percent say they often worry about overage penalties on those plans.

T-Mobile said it’s time to put a stop to the madness. It’s time to free wireless customers from having to decipher confusing gigabyte promotions, from policing their own family’s data usage and from punishing overage charges. The Un-carrier is cutting through the clutter and complexity with a radically simple idea: everyone on your family plan uses as much data as they want. And, you can do it at a better price without ever worrying about domestic overages.
    —–

In addition to the unlimited 4G LTE family plan, T-Mobile touts features including no annual service contracts or domestic overages, unlimited talk and text, unmetered music streaming on the company’s nationwide network, plus unlimited data and texting in 120+ countries and destinations, next-gen Wi-Fi calling and free in-flight messaging, among other benefits.

“Of course, every single T-Mobile Simple Choice postpaid customer immediately qualifies to take advantage of this offer. That’s how the Un-carrier does it, putting our customers first,” said CEO John Legere. “But not the carriers. Last week, one of them launched a new promotion that not one of their existing customers could get. That makes my head spin, and it’s exactly the kind of BS we’re on a mission to end.”

You can check out a side-by-side comparison of the costs and benefits of a typical family of four posted by T-Mobile below.

The plan is only available for a limited time but once you’re on it there is no planned expiration date.

  • Corning's New Gorilla Glass 4 Resists Screen Breakage From Everyday Drops [Video]

Corning today announced Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which is up to two times tougher than any competitive cover glass design now in the market. The new Gorilla Glass 4 has been formulated to address consumers’ number one issue – screen breakage from everyday drops.

Gorilla Glass 4 provides at least two times improved damage resistance over competitive aluminosilicate glass, as measured by retained strength after damage events, resulting in improved mechanical durability of the glass to in-field damage events, such as drops.

Apple uses Gorilla Glass in its mobile devices. It had planned a shift to sapphire glass; however, due to the spectacular failure of its partnership with GT, its next generation devices may be equipped with Gorilla Glass 4 display covers.

  • Untethered iOS 8.1.1 Jailbreak Demonstrated [Video]

  • Apple Plans to Bundle Beats Music with iOS Early Next Year

Apple will reportedly bundle Beats Music, the streaming service, with iOS early next year, according to the Financial Times.

Apple will bundle the subscription music service it acquired from Beats into its iOS operating system early next year, instantly making it available on hundreds of millions of iPhones and iPads – and ramping up pressure on Spotify, the market leader in music streaming.

The inclusion of the paid-for Beats service in an iOS software update could happen as early as March, according to people familiar with the situation. The move represents Apple’s first attempt to capitalise on Beats since it bought the headphone maker and streaming service from Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine for $3bn this year.

  • Apple Tweaks App Store Buttons to Say 'Get' Instead of 'Free'

Apple has tweaked its App Store buttons replacing the ‘Free’ button previously used to download apps for no charge with a new button that reads ‘Get’.

It’s not exactly clear why Apple decided to change the wording of its buttons; however, it likely has to do with the controversy over in-app purchases.

Back in July, The European Commission issued a statement criticizing Apple for taking ‘no concrete and immediate solutions’ to address concerns with in-app purchases, in particular inadvertent purchases by children.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Tab S 10.5 Beat Apple iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 in Color Accuracy

DisplayMate has tested six of the best quality mobile to displays for color accuracy and determined that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Tab S 10.5 outperform the Apple iPhone 6 Plus and iPad Air 2.

We have taken the six best mobile displays from our Display Technology Shoot-Out article series over the last year and performed an in-depth analysis of their Color Accuracy. Since we only test the best performing displays to begin with, they were already known to be fairly good. There are none-the-less significant differences between them. With color variations of up to 10 JNCD between the displays shown in Figure 3, it was fairly easy to see some significant visual differences between all of the displays. So, while we learned which ones are the Best of the Best, there is still plenty of room for future improvement

    The Results:
    1. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the winner in Absolute Color Accuracy, coming in first place in all categories for its Basic Screen Mode setting.
