Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Video Allegedly Shows Sapphire Crystal iPhone 6 Front Panel Being Bent [Watch]

Sonny Dickson has posted a new video clip which allegedly shows a sapphire crystal iPhone 6 front panel being bent without breaking.
The video doesn’t offer any proof that the front panel is made from sapphire crystal; however, it’s widely been rumored that Apple will switch to the material for its added strength.
A report from last month predicted that Apple’s Mesa sapphire operations will produce enough supply to cover the iWatch, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6. Although, a conflicting report said only the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 would get sapphire crystal.

At Hon Hai’s annual shareholder meeting, CEO Terry Gou revealed that the company has entered the final testing stage of a Foxconn robot factory that would substitute robots for production workers. Once operational, Apple will be the first company to use the service, reports ITHome.
Apple in the first quarter of fiscal year 2014 sold about 43.7 million units iPhone, Foxconn, which makes Apple became the biggest customer. If this project is completed, then you do not need to use Foxconn workers to assemble the device, each robot can be responsible for an average of 30,000 devices. Gou said the robot named “Foxbots”, and said they would not sell these robots, because they themselves had not enough.
Foxconn will apparently deploy at least 10,000 Foxbots per Foxconn factory, and each robot will cost 20,000 to 25,000 U.S. dollars.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - On-Demand Music Streaming Up 42% Over Last Year, Digital Track Sales Down 13%

A new report from Nielsen SoundScan and Nielsen BDS reveals that music streaming is gaining popularity as digital sales drop. The report looked at data for December 30, 2013 through June 29, 2014. Nielsen SoundScan measures U.S. point-of-sale of recorded music product. Nielsen BDS tracks U.S. radio airplay and music streams.
For the first six months of 2014, sales of albums are down 14.9% vs. the first six months of 2013. Vinyl Album Sales and On-Demand streaming continues to show strong gains – Vinyl LP sales are up 40.4% and overall On-Demand streaming up 42% over last year, with on-demand audio up 50.1% and on-demand video up 35.2%.
“With On-Demand streams surpassing 70 billion songs in the first six months of 2014, streaming continues to be an increasingly significant portion of the music industry,” says David Bakula, SVP Nielsen Entertainment. “Streaming’s 42% year-over-year growth and Vinyl LP’s 40% increase over last year’s record-setting pace shows interest in buying and consuming music continues to be robust, with two very distinct segments of the industry expanding substantially.”

A new report from China.com citing ‘inside sources’ claims that Apple will announce the iPhone 6 on September 15th and it will go on sale September 25th. GforGames notes that the source suggests China will be among the first countries to the device, leaving some possibility for a U.S. launch on September 19th as previously rumored.
This new report indicates that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will go on sale in China for 5,288 yuan, which roughly translates into $850. This comes in line with an earlier report which stated that the 32GB model will sell for the exact same price. Currently, the 16GB iPhone 5S is priced the same, in China. Earlier last year we reported that Microsoft was working on a smart watch. Today, Windows blogger Paul Thurrott claims that Microsoft’s wearable is actually a fitness band that will work with multiple platforms.
My sources tell me instead that Microsoft will this fall release a Samsung Gear Fit-like fitness band that will display smart phone-based notifications, just like the current and rumored watches and other wearables. So that’s the first bit of rumor busting: It’s a wristband, not a watch. (Yes, I’m sure you’ll be able to see the time on its screen. But the form factor is a wristband.
Microsoft’s fitness band will reportedly have the ability to sync with multiple platforms including Windows Phone, Android and iOS. Samsung wearables only work with Samsung devices and Android wearables only work with Android devices — but it seems Microsoft is taking an alternative route and having its wearable work with all platforms.

Support for legacy .Mac and .Me AIM accounts has ended for Macs Running OS X 10.7.1 or earlier, according to an Apple support document. To be able to use a .Mac or .Me AIM account with Messages, users must update to OS X 10.7.2 or later to achieve this.
To ensure a secure and reliable experience, customers using a mac.com or me.com ID to login to the AIM service via iChat must upgrade their Mac to OS X version 10.7.2 or later by June 30, 2014 to continue using the AIM service.
Reports earlier today claimed that Apple was ending support for all .Mac and .Me accounts, regardless of what OS X version the user was running. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Analysts Boost Apple Price Targets Ahead of iPhone 6 [Chart]

A majority of analysts have a now set a price target above $100 ($700 pre-split) for Apple’s stock. The new higher targets have followed the company’s aggressive stock repurchase plan and its 7-for-1 stock split.
Analysts are also predicting a hugely profitable iPhone 6 launch. In an investor note posted yesterday, Walter Piecyk notes that Verizon’s new smartphone leasing plans will allow many iPhone owners to upgrade for 0% upfront:
“Historically we estimate that ~20% of AT&T’s subscriber base was eligible for an upgrade during an iPhone launch quarter. That eligibility dropped to a low of the mid-teens in the second half of 2013 due to the stricter upgrade policies. We expect AT&T’s new Mobile Share Value plan to increase the percentage of AT&T post-paid subscriber base eligible to upgrade to over 65% by the time the next iPhone launches. In absolute terms that is the difference between 10 or 11 million eligible for upgrades and 45-50 million.”

Q: Sharp manufactures small and midsize LCD panels at the Kameyama No. 1 plant. But this operation is not that profitable.A: The No. 1 plant’s output goes to just one company (Apple). If you look at just this plant, it certainly presents a high level of volatility risk. But if we make LCD panels for smartphones in large quantities at the No. 2 plant, we can absorb the impact even when the No. 1 plant is not doing so well.

Apple has been offering its iPhone trade-in program almost a year now and it has slowly expanded it to other countries since then. Customers in Italy can now trade their iPhone in at Apple stores for credit towards the purchase of an iPhone 5s, iPhone 5 or iPhone 4s.
The news comes from Apple’s own Apple Store App, which indicates Apple is offering up to €220 for older iPhones (approximately $300). The program allows you to trade in an iPhone 3G and get credit towards any current iPhone model. Apple says it will also recycle the older iPhones instead of having customers throw them away.
The program is set to expand to Australia as well, according to sources. Apple has reportedly been training several employees in the area on the program. Apple also offers an iPad trade-in program but that is not offered in Italy just yet.

Apple has apparently decided to use just one brightness enhancement film (BEC) in its backlit LCD display in order to save up space. Previously, iPhone models have used two BEFs.
The reason why a single BEF could cause yield issues is because the remaining layer needs to be better enough to get the job done by itself. As for the alleged yield problems, these reports suggest that some of Minebea’s backlight orders will be taken over by OMRON and Radiant.

Most notably, Nikkei (via GforGames) says that the antenna breaks found in all the mockups are not part of the final design.

The team behind the Pangu jailbreak stopped using a bug discovered by i0n1c in the latest version of their utility, apparently burning another exploit in the process.
Many were already upset that the team released a jailbreak for iOS 7.1.1; rather than saving the exploits used for a potential iOS 8 jailbreak.
At the time of initial release I0n1c declared, “if pangu team releases a public jailbreak with vulnerabilities disclosed to them during my training I consider this in no way okay.” It turns out the team was using his vulnerability.

- Alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 Rear Shell Surfaces in New Video

Japanese blog Mac Otakara published a video today that shows the purported iPhone 6 rear shell for the 4.7-inch model alongside an iPhone 5s and other iPhone 6 mockups. We have seen photos of the alleged shell, but this is the first time we’ve seen a video.
The shell is thinner than the iPhone 5s’ and has the correct cutouts for the volume buttons, silent switch and the relocated sleep/wake button. There is a cutout for the Apple logo, which we believe is likely part of the manufacturing process; however, there’s a small possibility that Apple could use the logo as a notification indicator.
The next generation iPhone 6 is rumored to launch in both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes, however the 5.5-inch model may receive exclusive features such as optical image stabilization and 128GB of storage. The device is rumored to feature a 1704 x 960 resolution display bringing a higher pixel density, as well as an A8 processor, an improved camera, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and an all new design with rounded corners with a relocated sleep/wake button.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple to Release iOS 8 Beta 3 on July 8?

Apple is reportedly planning to release the third beta of iOS 8 on July 8, according to BGR, making it approximately three weeks from the previous beta 2 seed. Apple usually likes to release the first few betas every two weeks or so, until it gradually shifts into three week intervals as the testing phase progresses.
Apple’s iOS 8 software is moving along the usual path to general consumer release later this fall, with new beta versions being made available to developers for testing approximately every two weeks. Unfortunately, we have learned from trusted sources that iOS 8 beta 3 won’t be released to developers until Tuesday, July 8th. This would mean a three-week gap between when iOS 8 beta 2 was released on June 17th, and beta 3?s release.
BGR does have a good track record when it comes to iOS firmware releases, especially beta seeds. Many have reported iOS 8 Beta 2 to be buggier than the first release, so we’ll see how beta 3 does.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Only the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Will Get 128GB of Storage?

Earlier today it was reported that Apple would be launching the iPhone 6 September 19 in 32 and 64gb variants, and the 16gb model would presumably be dropped. However many wondered if Apple would release a 128GB version of the iPhone as a new capacity. Now chinese news site Wei Feng is claiming that a 128GB version will indeed be launching, however it will be limited to the 5.5-inch model.
The site says that offering a 128GB version that is exclusive to the 5.5-inch iPhone will give customers the true “phablet” experience allowing them to store many files, documents and data. That means that the 4.7-inch model would only launch with two storage tiers — 32GB and 64GB. Currently Apple only offers 128GB of storage for iPads and only 64GB for iPhones/iPod Touches.
Apple’s next generation iPhone launch is shaping up to be an exciting one as the company is rumored to launch two iPhones with larger screens (4.7-inch and 5.5-inch). The device is rumored to feature a 1704 x 960 resolution display bringing a higher pixel density, as well as an A8 processor, an improved camera, NFC, optical image stabilization 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and an all new design with rounded corners with a relocated sleep/wake button.

(Product) RED has thanked Apple for the $75 million the company has donated to fight AIDS in a blog post today. Back in April the charity announced that Apple’s contributions had reached $70 million. RED also addressed the comments made by U2’s Bono at the Cannes Lions festival last week. Bono took a jab at Apple’s quiet involvement in the charity while Jony Ive was on stage.
“One of the reasons it’s such a credit to have Jony Ive on the stage,” Bono told panel moderator and Vice CEO Shane Smith, “is because Apple is so fucking annoyingly quiet about the fact they’ve raised $75 million. Nobody knows!”
Bono went so far as to stand up, pull out an official (Red) iPad cover and remove the device, illustrating to the audience that the only actual nod to the nonprofit was inside the cover and therefore always obscured by the tablet.

It was reported that some have been able to unlock iOS 8 beta 2’s flyover city tour feature. As it turns out, the feature is already available in same beta 2 release that was seeded to developers last week.
To begin a flyover city tour, you must first be using Maps in Hybrid mode. If a city supports flyover tours, it will be labeled in yellow instead of white. Supported cities include: Rome, Stockholm, Barcelona, ??New York, Paris, Glasgow, Cape Town, Perth, Bordeaux and the Bay of San Francisco.
Once you click the yellow city label you will see the option for the flyover tour. The feature is currently available in the latest Yosemite and iOS 8 beta; however, currently you need to click the city to access it. Searching for cities will not give you the option. The fact that this UI is so hidden and no one has discovered it until now suggests that Apple will make some tweaks before iOS 8 is released to the public this fall.

Symptoms of a damaged component include:

– when the iPhone is put onto charge the screen stays blank and the iPhone remains lifelessAuthentic Apple equipment regulates voltage and current to a level that is safe for the components of your device. Charging with unauthorized chargers and cables may allow for a larger variance in voltage and current which then damages the U2 IC.

Apple will release a ‘Sports’ model and a ‘Designer’ model of its iWatch, reports PocketNow.
There is a “Sports” model, which apparently has a rectangular design and a rubber bracelet. This model was reportedly being tested recently by Kobe Bryant at the Apple campus, and what’s most interesting is that it apparently looks like any other watch on the market. The report also mentions that there is a “Designer” variant of the iWatch which has a circular design and a metallic construction that’s most probably stainless steel. This model is reportedly being tested by Dustin Brown and Bubba Watson, and just like the Sports model, it’s hard to tell this watch apart from any other watch on the market.
Both models are said to feature a touch screen and be water resistant. The Sports model is said to have a compass and sensors to determine blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, outside temperature, barometric pressure, and blood oxygen levels.

That 14cm converts to the 5.5-inches heavily rumored for the next-generation Apple smartphone. While these photos do not provide us with any breakthrough information about the new iPhone, the photos, at best, do show that Apple is already producing components for the larger sized phone and this means that production is likely nearing.
Jimmy Lin, a Taiwanese media star and race car driver, posted a photo recently of what is allegedly the 5.5-inch iPhone 6.

Finally, 7.1.2 will be bringing improvements to iBeacon connectivity and a bug fix that addresses data transfer with third-party accessories.
The sources did not mention anything about the iMessage bug that impacts users when switching devices, but it is likely that Apple quietly included that fix in the build.

iPhone theft has been rising for years now; however, police in New York, San Francisco and London say that they’re finally starting to see a dip in thefts of the popular smartphone. Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman believes the decline in iPhone theft is thanks to Apple’s Activation Lock feature that debuted with iOS 7 last September.
Police officers in San Francisco and London say that after Apple introduced its measure, called Activation Lock, last fall, iPhone theft fell significantly. Comparing data in the six months before and after Apple released the feature, the police said iPhone robberies in San Francisco dropped 38 percent, and those in London fell 24 percent.
The police in New York said that robberies involving Apple products dropped 19 percent and those involving grand larcenies dropped 29 percent in the first five months of 2014, compared with the same time period from 2013.

At its Uncarrier 5 event T-Mobile decided to also hold a surprise ‘Uncarrier 6’ event that focused on music. T-Mobile customers can now stream an unlimited amount of Pandora, Rhapsody, iHeartRadio, iTunes Radio, Slacker, Spotify, Samsung Milk and Beatport without it counting against their data cap. Currently, you can only stream an unlimited amount of music from the select services listed above, but T-Mobile is asking customers to let them know which other services they would like to see included.
“As a committed music freak, I’m personally outraged at the way the other guys are using the music you love to lure you into over-priced plans with sweet ‘promotional offers’ that quickly roll into higher prices or trigger those absurd overage charges,” said T-Mobile CEO and President John Legere. “Music should be free of all that. Music should have no limits. So, beginning right now, you can stream all you want at T-Mobile from all of the top music services – data charges do not apply.”
“Our competitors want you to believe that Internet radio is still free on their networks – but it’s not,” said Mike Sievert, Chief Marketing Officer for T-Mobile. “On AT&T and Verizon, you’re paying for every note of every song you stream. You even pay for the ads. Our goal with Music Freedom is different. We want people to enjoy their music worry-free – the way it’s meant to be.”

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Sharp Announces New 'Free-Form Display' That Can Be Made In Any Shape

Sharp has announced the development of a ‘Free-Form Display’, a revolutionary advancement that enables the creation of new display designs to match a variety of applications.
—
LCDs have contributed to the emergence and spread of a range of application products by offering not just display-related functions such as high brightness, wide viewing angle, high resolution, and superb color purity, but also by providing added value through, for example, greater environmental performance and a superior user interface thanks to touch-panel functions. In addition, LCD application product manufacturers want to offer consumers products with a more polished design, and Sharp has responded by providing these manufacturers with displays that boast features like slim profiles, light weight, and thin bezels.Continuing on this tradition of innovation, Sharp announces the development of the Free-Form Display, a device that can be shaped to meet a wide range of user needs thanks to the incorporation of IGZO technology and proprietary circuit design methods. Conventional displays are rectangular because they require a minimal width for the bezel in order to accommodate the drive circuit, called the gate driver, around the perimeter of the screen’s display area. With the Free-Form Display, the gate driver’s function is dispersed throughout the pixels on the display area. This allows the bezel to be shrunk considerably, and it gives the freedom to design the LCD to match whatever shape the display area of the screen needs to be.

Google is reportedly planning to launch a new health service called Google Fit which will collect and aggregate data from fitness trackers and health-related apps. The company is expected to launch the service at its Google I/O conference on June 25th and 26th, says Forbes.
The service would be a direct challenge to Apple’s new HealthKit framework which aggregates data from wearable devices and apps. It also rivals Samsung’s ‘Sami’ platform which does the same.
Google Fit will aggregate data through open APIs, instruction sets that allow apps to share information, and will also announce partnerships with wearable device makers at its I/O conference, Forbes understands. One source with knowledge of Google’s plans said Google Fit would allow a wearable device that measures data like steps or heart rate to interface with Google’s cloud-based services, and become part of the Google Fit ecosystem. Google could not be reached for comment at the time of writing.

- iOS 8 Randomizes Your MAC Address When Searching for Wi-Fi to Prevent Location Tracking

iOS 8 has made a nice little change in the way it protects your privacy from marketers by randomizing your MAC address when scanning for Wi-Fi networks.
When you’re out and about with your Wi-Fi turned on, you’re actually broadcasting your MAC address to retailers, government agencies, marketing agencies and more — even if you never connect to the wireless network. Firms can use that unique MAC address, along with video surveillance footage to learn your shopping habits and effectively track your location while you’re in the range of the basestation.
With iOS 8, Apple now randomizes/spoofs your MAC address while you broadcast your Wi-Fi signal, disguising you from marketers and other firms as they are unable to tell who is who. Once you connect to a wireless network, then your device provides the real MAC address.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Why Maps Didn’t Get Major Improvements With iOS 8

Apple’s iOS 8 was supposed to bring big changes and improvements to the Maps app —including public transit data, more reliable data, better POI data and more. Many were surprised at WWDC when little to no changes were announced for the Maps application aside from vectro-based maps in China. A source familiar with the situation claims that the lack of improvements was due to the departure of many developers, poor management, and ‘internal politics’ that ultimately caused project to suffer.
Many developers left the company, no map improvements planned for iOS 8 release were finished in time. Mostly it was failure of project managers and engineering project managers, tasks were very badly planned, developers had to switch multiple times from project to project.
Another source corroborated much of what was said by the first tipster.

Dr. Dre (Andre Young) joined Apple a few weeks ago after the company acquired Beats music. Throughout post-deal interviews and talks, Jimmy Iovine, Beats Music’s co-founder did most of the talking to the press; however, a recent Wall Street Journal profile offers a behind the scenes look at the important role Dr. Dre plays.
Behind the scenes, Dr. Dre—whose real name is Andre Young —has quietly played an equally powerful role developing and protecting the Beats brand, eschewing market research for gut instinct at every turn. Though his main obsession is perfecting the sound of the company’s signature high-end headphones, the 49-year-old fitness-obsessed music producer weighs in decisively on everything from TV ads and font styles to the wordiness of descriptions on the Beats Music streaming service.
A colleague says that Dr. Dre serves as Beats’ “cultural barometer” of what is cool. His process is called mysterious and his assessments are usually immediate, personal, and articulated sparely. He apparently dismisses ideas such as posing for clichéd photos in a recording studio as too “corny” or “cheesy.” Or, he may wave off ideas he doesn’t like with a terse “I’m not feeling that.”

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Scientists Develop Shatterproof Smartphone Screens

Scientists have developed a new shatterproof smartphone screen that could end the cracking/shattering of smartphone displays including the iPhone.
University of Akron polymer scientists have discovered that by adding a fully transparent layer of electrodes to a polymer surface will result in a more durable and flexible surface. This could revolutionize and replace the conventional touchscreens that we see on most smartphones today. Currently the smartphones on the market use coating of indium tin oxide (ITO) and are more brittle and more likely to shatter.
“These two pronounced factors drive the need to substitute ITO with a cost-effective and flexible conductive transparent film,” Zhu says, adding that the new film provides the same degree of transparency as ITO, yet offers greater conductivity. The novel film retains its shape and functionality after tests in which it has been bent 1,000 times. Due to its flexibility, the transparent electrode can be fabricated in economical, mass-quantity rolls.

In an effort to help boost iPhone sales in its own retail stores, Apple is planning on soon offering pre-paid and month-to-month plans in its United State retail stores, according to 9to5mac. The plans would be offered to customers who when purchasing a full-priced, unlocked iPhone, rather than signing a two-year agreement.
If someone wanted to get a month-to-month service today, they would have to buy the iPhone at the Apple store, then go to a local carrier and setup their service with the device. However, that could all change if Apple offers the service directly through the Apple Store. Apple will be patterning with AT&T and T-Mobile for this new initiative.
Apple Stores will soon stock up on AT&T GoPhone pre-paid activation kits and SIM cards, and stores will use the existing T-Mobile SIM cards for customers that will choose T-Mobile pre-paid plans. Apple will begin training its store employees on the new pre-paid and month-to-month iPhone sales practices in the coming weeks. Sales staff will promote AT&T’s $60 per month pre-paid plan (with 2.5GB of internet data and unlimited talk and text) to those seeking AT&T plans, while the stores will offer $50/month (1GB LTE data) and $70/month (5GB LTE data) unlimited data plans to customers seeking T-Mobile devices. The activations must be done at the time of purchase in Apple Stores and those devices will be unable to be returned to Apple for a refund.

Apple has already had its in-house team create the iPad Air ad comparing the device’s thickness to a pencil, and has been responsible for other ads that have aired this year. Apple’s own team features a couple hires from ChiatDay, and Tyler Whisnand, who is the lead of Apple’s creative team, according to the people familiar with the companies.
