- Microsoft to Unveil Office for iPad and New Enterprise Mobility Suite Today?

Microsoft will reportedly take the wraps off Office for iPad today at an event in San Francisco, according to Mary Jo Foley for ZDNet. In addition, the company is also predicted to debut a new Enterprise Mobility Suite for large enterprise customers.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is expected to unveil the long-rumored Microsoft Office for iPad suite on March 27. But there’s another Microsoft “suite” that I’m hearing will debut on March 27, too. That suite, a licensing bundle known as the Microsoft Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS), is for large enterprise customers who need to manage centrally iPads, iPhones, Android devices, Windows devices and more, according to sources of mine who’ve requested anonymity.
The suite of apps is rumored to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. A Microsoft Office 365 subscription will most likely be required. Just 10 days ago, Microsoft released OneNote for Mac for the first time.

Twitter has revealed the new features added to its iOS app today. One is photo tagging, which lets you tag the people in your photo; the other is the ability to include up to four photos in a Tweet.
Tag up to 10 people in a photo
Tagging people in a picture makes conversations around photos fun and easy. And tagging doesn’t affect character count in the Tweet — you can tag up to 10 people in a photo and still have all 140 characters at your disposal, making it easier to connect with your friends. If you’re the one being tagged, you’ll get a notification. You can adjust notifications, as well as who can tag you, in your Settings.

- Apple Supplier Pegatron Posts 22% Jump in Earnings

Pegatron, the manufacturer of the Apple iPhone 5c and iPad mini, posted a 22% jump in earnings today, reports the WSJ. The increase is attributed to the company’s growing role as a supplier for Apple.
Apple has increasingly sought out production partners beyond its primary manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., also known as Foxconn, in an effort to secure production capacity for an expanding range of products. Taiwan-based Pegatron has been the main beneficiary, but Apple has also begun to work with some other manufacturers, as reported previously in The Wall Street Journal.
At an investor conference on Monday, Pegatron CEO Jason Cheng said, “While PCs will still be around, mobile devices are a faster growing sector, and we want an even balance between the different parts of our business.”

Apple is in talks with Comcast about a streaming television service, reports the WSJ. The service would use the Apple TV set-top box and get priority service on Comcast’s network to bypass net congestion, according to sources.
The discussions between the world’s most valuable company and the nation’s largest cable provider are still in early stages and many hurdles remain. But the deal, if sealed, would mark a new level of cooperation and integration between a technology company and a cable provider to modernize TV viewing. Apple’s intention is to allow users to stream live and on-demand TV programming and digital-video recordings stored in the “cloud,” effectively taking the place of a traditional cable set-top box.
Apple has been pursing various avenues to enter TV; however, media companies and cable companies are hesitant to let Apple into their market. The company is not yet close to an agreement with Comcast who would need to make major network investments to meet Apple’s desired service quality.

China Mobile added about one million new iPhone users last month following the launch of the smartphone on its network in mid-January, reports the WSJ. China Mobile just reported its first annual decline in earnings in over ten years due to stiff competition.

The dominant Chinese carrier, which launched speedier fourth-generation mobile services in late December, is betting on 4G iPhones to attract new customers as competition intensifies. For Apple, the stakes are high in China. Sam Beckett has posted a realistic concept video for a 4.7-inch iPhone Air.
The phone is only 8% larger than the existing iPhone 5S, this increase is to accommodate the larger screen. Some extra space could be potentially utilised by reducing the width of the side bezels and by also slimming down the top and bottom of the phone frame too. The depth of the iPhone Air is 7mm, coming in 0.6mm smaller than it’s predecessor. This modest reduction in the device depth and larger increase in the width and height could help create a bigger space for the battery and other components.
The 4.7-inch screen would have a 1920×1080 resolution resulting in a pixel density of 468ppi. It uses sapphire crystal cover glass instead of Gorilla Glass for added strength and durability. Other features include an upgraded 10MP f/1.8 camera and an A8 chip.

Apple is hiring hundreds of engineers and supply chain managers in China to speed up development of a new iPhone, reports the WSJ.
People familiar with the matter said the Cupertino, Calif., company is hiring engineers from rival smartphone maker HTC Corp. and other Taiwanese tech firms to build up teams in Shanghai and Taipei. The hiring push reflects Apple’s need for more engineers to work with Asian suppliers on developing components for coming iPhones and iPads as it plans for faster and more frequent product launches. Apple is also ramping up its number of supply-chain managers in the wake of criticism over factory conditions at some of its suppliers.
Apple has reportedly hired hundreds of new engineers and operations staff over the past two years. A hiring blitz began in mid-2013 with Apple using LinkedIn to reach out individually to engineers at HTC, Inventec, and Quanta.

Nanosys holds over 300 patents in QD and has Samsung as a major investor. They wouldn’t confirm Apple will make use of QD, quoting NDAs; however, CEO Jason Hartlove told the site that the first QD smartphone would launch by mid-year.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - I0n1c Releases 'Quick and Dirty' Patch to Fix Serious SSL Vulnerability in OS X Mavericks

Stefan Esser, also known as i0n1c, has made a ‘quick and dirty’ patch available to fix the serious SSL vulnerability that Apple just patched in iOS but has yet to fix in OS X Mavericks.
The flaw is very serious because it totally compromises the security of SSL and allows for man in the middle attack on otherwise secure SSL connections without any warning on the client side. Unfortunately it has been discovered that this vulnerability is also present in OSX Mavericks. When you look at the following code snippet that is taken from Security.framework’s sslKeyExchange.c you can spot a superfluous “goto fail;” statement. This statement is executed in all cases and completely bypasses the call to sslRawVerify. This means there is actually no verification performed on the signed server key exchange.
I0n1c has released a patch for the 64bit version of the Security.framework. However, users are warned that it is experimental and shouldn’t be installed on production machines.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple iWatch to Predict If You're About to Have a Heart Attack?

Apple’s upcoming iWatch may predict if you’re about to have a heart attack, according to The Chronicle.
Tomlinson Holman, who Apple reportedly hired in 2011 to “provide audio direction”, is a renowned audio engineer who invented THX and 10.2 surround sound. Holman has apparently been working on sensor technology to predict heart attacks by studying the sound blood makes as it flows through arteries.
Apple is exploring ways to measure noise “turbulence” as it applies to blood flow. The company wants to develop software and sensors that can predict heart attacks by identifying the sound blood makes as it tries to move through an artery clogged with plaque, the source said.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple to Release Updated iPad Air This Year, No New iPad Mini or 12.9-Inch iPad Until 2015?

Apple will reportedly release a new iPad Air this year but will hold off on updating the iPad mini or releasing a larger 12.9-inch iPad until 2015, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The new iPad Air would feature an A8 processor and Touch ID fingerprint scanner.
Compared with lower-margin iPad mini with Retina display, which shipments has been tepid, higher-margin iPad Air was a hot selling item in 4Q13, which will slow Apple in developing new iPad mini models. We believe Apple plans to launch upgraded iPad Air early this year, and will accelerate development of 12.9” iPad. As such, more resources will be allocated to these two products, which will affect the progress of the development of new iPad mini. All told, we think chances of the debut of a new iPad mini in 2H14 are slim. In addition, the 12.9” iPad is unlikely to be offered in 2014. For these reasons, we predict the only new iPad product in 2H14 will be the upgraded iPad Air.
Kuo believes the 12.9-inch iPad will allow developers to create more interactive apps thanks to its larger screen size. However, Apple is reportedly focusing its energy on the iWatch which will be released this year.

Toshiba has announced the launch of nearline enterprise capacity HDDs with a 5TB recording capacity, the industry’s largest for models that are not filled with helium gas.
The new series uses 1TB/platter (max) magnetic disks to realize a capacity of 5TB and achieve an internal data transfer rate of 205MiB/s, 24% faster than Toshiba’s current models, MG03SCA400 and MG03ACA400 (4TB, 165MiB/s). The series is engineered for the high-capacity demands of mid-tier servers and cloud application workloads, and for capacity-optimized data center storage systems that benefit from high capacity per spindle.
System builders have the option of selecting a Sanitize Devise Feature set function for each model, which makes it possible to invalidate important data recorded on the magnetic disks at a blink. The series also provides, as an option, persistent write cache technologies that help protect against data-loss in the event of sudden power loss.
