  • Another Physical Mockup of the Alleged iPhone 6 [Photo]

Another physical mockup of the alleged iPhone 6 has surfaced online.

Macitynet posted a photo of the unit yesterday noting that case manufacturers use these models to test the fit of their new case designs.

The iPhone 6 will have rounded edges and the Standby button will be shifted to the right in order to ensure easy access when used with a single hand, given the increase of the display which will expand slightly on the short side of the device. We see however also two thin lines on the upper and lower edges that probably indicate a design similar to that of the iPhone, characterized by an aluminum back but broken by two bands in another material (maybe in the glass as the iPhone 5S) which should ensure proper operation of the antenna. Of note, the projection lens of the camera; the technical solution is the same as for the latest generation of iPod touch, remember, has just a protruding ring that protects the glass lens, reading to the surface of the back.

  • Sprint is Preparing a Bid to Acquire T-Mobile

Sprint is reportedly preparing a bid to acquire T-Mobile U.S. and has already met with banks to make debt arrangements, reports Bloomberg.

Sprint Chief Financial Officer Joe Euteneuer and Treasurer Greg Block met with six banks to ensure the lenders would be ready with financing structures when Sprint decides to pursue a takeover, said three of the people, asking not to named because the discussions are private. Masayoshi Son, chief executive officer of SoftBank Corp. (9984), which owns about 80 percent of Sprint, is expected to make a formal bid in June or July, one of the people said.

Regulators have expressed concerns about the deal; however, Son and his team are building an argument that they hope will convince the FCC and DOJ to allow the acquisition.

  • Samsung: 'We Don't Think We Owe Apple a Nickel'

Samsung said it doesn’t believe it owes Apple a nickel and that there will be dancing in the streets of Cupertino if the jury awards them even $100 million, during closing arguments in the Apple vs. Samsung trial.

Apple told the jury that anything short of a massive award for damages would validate Samsung’s ‘illegal strategy’ to copy the features of the iPhone, reports the WSJ. Apple is seeking $2.2 billion in damages from Samsung.

“We don’t think we owe Apple a nickel,” said John Quinn, a Samsung lawyer. “They’ll be dancing in the streets of Cupertino if you give them $100 million.”

  • GT Advanced Has Already Begun Shipping Sapphire to Apple Partners in China

GT Advanced has already begun shipping sapphire to Apple partners in China, according to a new reports from Matt Margolis and UBS.

Back in January, Margolis reported that not only does Apple plan to use sapphire glass for the iPhone 6 but that it could even function as a solar charging panel to improve battery life.

If you follow the Obscure Analyst, you would already know GT turned on 140 furnaces on January 10th, 2014 and UBS checks indicate that the “Quick Start 140” furnaces made their first delivery of sapphire ingot in to one of Apple’s partners in China who will make the sapphire covers. A sapphire ingot is a sapphire that is “cored” out of the boule that will need to be sliced into sapphire screens. UBS indicated that 2,200 kg of sapphire ingots were shipped to China for processing. I am estimating that approximately 100,000 to 115,000 sapphire screens could be produced from 2,200 kg of sapphire ingots. GT’s selling price per screen based on the information provided is falling into the range of $8.50 to $10 per screen.

  • Microsoft Demos a Motion Sensing Mechanical Keyboard [Video]

Microsoft has released a new video demonstrating a motion sensing mechanical keyboard.

The keyboard blends traditional typing with motion based gestures, letting your hands remain in the home position on the keyboard. Hover gestures above the keyboard let you switch between applications. Navigating documents is possible using core swipes and pinch-to-zoom.

We present a new type of augmented mechanical keyboard, sensing rich and expressive motion gestures performed both on and directly above the device. A low-resolution matrix of infrared (IR) proximity sensors is interspersed with the keys of a regular mechanical keyboard. This results in coarse but high frame-rate motion data.

  • Marissa Mayer Wants Apple to Drop Google and Default to Yahoo for Search

Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo, is focused on building a viable mobile search engine and monetization platform and getting Apple to use Yahoo as its default search engine, according to Re/code. Currently, Google is the default search engine on Apple’s mobile devices; however, you can choose to switch to Yahoo if you so desire.

A number of Yahoo insiders I have talked to said her plan to pitch Apple on the idea as its marquee mobile search partner is far along. The company has prepared detailed decks, including images of what such a search product would look like, and hopes to present them to Apple execs. That has not happened as yet officially and no deal is imminent — it’s just the big honking goal of the new Yahoo effort, said sources.

“This is the aim of the whole effort here, to grab the pole position in iOS search,” said one person working on the effort. “It will take more than pretty pictures, though, to convince Apple to give up Google, given its focus on consumer experience being top-notch. But Marissa wants it very badly.”

  • Apple to Partner With Shazam to Bring Music Identification Feature to iOS?

Apple is reportedly planning to bring a new music identification feature to iOS that will be powered by Shazam, reports Bloomberg. Shazam’s popular app for iOS can quickly determine which song is playing using the built-in microphone.

The song-identification feature will be integrated into the mobile software in the same way that Twitter Inc. (TWTR)’s service is currently incorporated, meaning consumers don’t need to separately download it. Among the ways it can be used will be through Apple’s voice-activated search feature, Siri. An iPhone user will be able to say something like “what song is playing,” to find out the tune’s details, one person said. The song-matching feature could boost Shazam, whose app was an early hit and has steered millions of song downloads through iTunes.

Apple is making attempts to boost the performance of iTunes as downloads have recently slowed. It’s been reported that Apple may even move to a subscription based model or release an iTunes app for Android.

  • Samsung to Release Android Wear Smartwatch This Year

Samsung is planning to release yet another smartwatch this year; however, this one will run Android Wear, reports The Verge.

Samsung’s first attempt at putting together an advanced smartwatch based on Android, the Galaxy Gear, met with a very rough reception at the tail end of last year, and the company quickly switched to its own Tizen software for the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo. In emailed comments to The Verge, Samsung has confirmed Yoon’s timeline of a 2014 release for its new smartwatch and clarified that it will indeed be using Android Wear. Together with the Gear Fit, which runs its own custom software, Samsung will soon be supporting three different operating systems for its wearable devices.

Google announced Android Wear back in March. A Developer Preview of Android Wear is already available, you can learn more about it here.

  • T-Mobile Abolishes Overage Penalties for All Customers

T-Mobile has announced that it is abolishing overages for all customers on T-Mobile consumer plans. The company notes that over 20 million Americans had to pay overage charges last year, amounting to over $1 billion in charges paid to the top three carriers.

“Today I’m laying down a challenge to AT&T, Verizon and Sprint to join T-Mobile in ending these outrageous overage penalties for all consumers – because it’s the right thing to do,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “Overage fees are flat out wrong. Agree with me? Join me in putting this challenge to all the major national carriers by signing my petition on Change.org. Right here. Take one minute to be a part of this consumer movement.”

Starting in May for bills arriving in June, T-Mobile will abolish overage charges regardless of the consumer plan you’re on.

  • Newly Leaked iPhone 6 Mold Reveals 4.7-Inch Display? [Photo]

A newly leaked mold from inside Foxconn may reveal that the iPhone 6 will have a 4.7-inch display. The mold was posted by Nowherelese and follows several schematic and mold leaks from yesterday.

I still believe that the parts to be produced using the mold will not be molded directly into it. Some of the holes that were drilled into the block in fact serve to fix the inserts which will form a crude which is then machined housing (finishes) using a CNC milling machine. Thus, and assuming that my theory is correct, the dimensions of the box will be determined by the widest part and not the bottom of the mold.

The site superimposed an iPhone 5s to fit the mold and measured the new screen size at exactly 4.7-inches. This is exactly the size widely rumored for the next generation device.

  • Apple Considers Raising Price of iPhone By $100

Apple has reportedly been negotiating a possible $100 price increase for the iPhone 6 with carriers, according to Jefferies analyst Peter Misek.

Initial response from carriers has been “no”; however, Misek says carriers realize that there is no other game-changing device this year and Apple may be able to negotiate a lesser increase. A $50 bump in price would offset the gross margin impact of the new device.

“The possibility may at first seem far-fetched in light of investor concerns regarding possible carrier subsidy and handset price cuts due to smartphone saturation and lack of differentiation,” Misek comments. “But we think this general lack of differentiation could be the reason why Apple may be able to get a price increase. Carriers realize that the iPhone 6 will likely be the only headline-worthy high-end phone launched this year and that they will lose subs if they do not offer it.”

  • Apple Acquires Hydroelectric Project Close to Its Prineville Data Center

Apple has reportedly acquired a Hydroelectric Project close to its Prineville, Oregon data center, according to OregonLive.

The Bulletin newspaper in Bend first reported Apple’s interest in the 45-Mile Hydroelectric Project, which is near Haystack Reservoir, about 20 miles northwest of Prineville. It’s in a Jefferson County irrigation canal, screened from fish runs. The project’s previous owner, EBD Hydro, won $7 million in federal loan guarantees and a $1.5 million federal grant to help finance its construction. The company had planned to start work late in 2011; it’s not clear if the facility is operating yet — Apple declined comment, and EBD did not immediately responded to inquiries on the deal.

According to previous proposals, the project would generate 3 to 5 megawatts, enough to generate 2,000 to 3,500 homes. However, OreganLive notes that the project will need to go offline during the winter months when the irrigation canal is closed.

  • Apple to Seek Subsidies for iWatch From Health Insurance Companies?

Cowen & Co analyst Timothy Arcuri speculates that Apple could seek subsidies for its rumored iWatch from health insurance companies, similar to how wireless carriers subsidize smartphones.

“We continue to believe it is possible the product (iWatch) is backstopped by some sort of insurance subsidization model similar to the carrier subsidization model for iPhone,” writes Arcuri.

The idea is that wearing the iWatch will keep users healthier by monitoring their steps taken, calories burned, blood pressure, heart rate and other vital signs.
