  • Plane Evacuated in Tel-Aviv After iPhone Catches Fire

A plane destined for Prague, Czech Republic from Tel-Aviv, Israel was evacuated during boarding after an iPhone spontaneously caught fire in a passenger’s handbag, reports AndroidPortal.

Given the location, the incident caused some panic amongst passengers leading the crew to evacuate everyone to the main terminal building. Apparently, smoke from the device spread through the whole plane and few people knew what was really happening.

The phone belonged to Yarden Leviovej. Her father told Nova TV, “My daughter opened her purse, from which we saw the flames and the heat radiating from it.” [Translation]

  • Apple Employee and U.S. Army Reservist Acted as a Human Shield to Save Life of British Colonel

A U.S. Army reservist, who normally works as a customer service manager at Apple, was shot six times after diving in front of a British colonel to protect him from a Taliban attack.

The soldier acted as a human shield when the colonel came under fire from a rogue Afghan soldier with an assault rifle, reports the DailyMail. He returned fire with a rifle and pistol but was shot multiple times. Two bullets hit one of his legs, one bullet tore into his shoulder, and three were stopped by his bulletproof vest.

It’s believed he saved the life of the senior officer as apparently the colonel was not wearing body armor.

  • Analyst: Apple Unlikely to Sell iPhones With Sapphire Displays This Year

J.P. Morgan analyst Rod Hall has issued a note to investors predicting that Apple is unlikely to use sapphire in this year’s iPhones due to prohibited costs associated with producing the material in large quantities.

Hall notes that GT Advanced Technologies has acquired Twin Creeks, a company that uses a wafering process called ‘Hyperion’ that could significantly reduce the cost of building a sapphire screen cover. Apple also has filed its own patents on sapphire laminates that could reduce costs.

In the report, received by AppleInsider, Hall estimated that producing the sapphire displays currently costs about 10 times more than using Corning’s Gorilla Glass. The higher cost is because the Hyperion ion implantation process is apparently not ready for mass production.

  • Leaked Schematic Reveals iPhone 6 Will Only Have 1GB of RAM?

A leaked schematic for the iPhone 6, posted by GeekBar on Weibo, alleged shows that the upcoming smartphone will have 1GB of RAM.

It’s unclear if the schematic is for the 4.7-inch or 5.5-inch iPhone 6. One GB of RAM would be less than the 2 GBs in many flagship Android devices and the same amount of RAM as the iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s.

In a world where flagship Android smartphones come with at least 2 GB of RAM, the iPhone 6 doesn’t sound powerful enough to compete with the most sought-after devices from the opposite camp. Nevertheless, Apple is a wizard when it comes to optimization and iOS has always been capable of successfully handling the same tasks as Android, while requiring fewer resources.

  • Users in Emerging Markets Want Smartphones With 5-Inch Displays or Larger [Chart]

Jana surveyed smartphone users across nine emerging markets to gain insight into their device preferences and learn more about the content that they consume. They found that over half of respondents in every market surveyed (except Nigeria) expect their next smartphone to have a screen size of 5-inch or larger.

Large screen devices are popular among respondents because of their suitability for video streaming and games.

Apple is expected to release a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6. The 4.7-inch device will likely appeal to those who value portability, while the 5.5-inch device would be great for media consumption.

  • More Photos of Purported 1810 mAh Battery for 4.7-inch iPhone 6 Surface

We first saw evidence that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 would feature a 1,810 mAh battery last month, when the alleged battery leaked. Previous reports had pegged the battery between 1800 and 1900 mAh, however some were disappointed to see the slight increase form the 1570 mAh battery found in the iPhone 5s.

Today, Nowwhereelse shares more images of an 1810 mAh battery, supporting the original leak. The photos show the typical battery found in an iPhone, with Apple logo and regulator approvals. One photo even shows an entire tray of the batteries ready for shipment.

One analyst had claimed that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 would feature a larger 2100 mAh battery, but the evidence continues to point to 1810 mAh.

Apple has responded to the findings, noting that is has already taken some action to address some the issue presented in the report.

  • iPhone 6 Release Shaping Up to be a Huge Upgrade Cycle

The iPhone 6 release is shaping up to be a massive upgrade cycle for many iPhone owners, according to comScore’s data points.

? 35% of all existing iPhone owners indicate they are likely to upgrade their device in the next six months.
? Those owning any iPhone prior to iPhone 4 have the highest likelihood of upgrading, at 46%.
? iPhone 4S represents the largest segment of iPhone owners at nearly 20 million, 40% of whom indicate they are ready to upgrade.
? iPhone 5C owners show the lowest likelihood of upgrading at 15%, which makes sense given that this model was only introduced to the market in late 2013 and was targeted to consumers at a lower price point.
? Interestingly, even though iPhone 5S owners have the latest and greatest version of the device, 24% of those owners – about 3.6 million in total – are already ready to upgrade.

comScore believes that iPhone 5s upgraders are the most unique as many of them are tech-savy users who want the latest and greatest from Apple. These upgraders are most likely to be a young adult male from an upper-income house, according to comScore’s findings.

  • Pegatron Reportedly Lands Half of Apple's 4.7-Inch iPhone 6 Orders

Pegatron has landed half of Apple’s 4.7-inch iPhone 6 orders, reports DigiTimes. That would suggest the company will supply 25 million units of the next generation smartphone by the end of 2014.

Previously, Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) was said to have landed all of Apple’s new 5.5-inch model orders and 70% of the 4.7-inch model’s orders. However, the latest development shows that the orders for the 4.7-inch models are split evenly between Pegatron and Foxconn, the sources said.

Pegatron’s relationship with Apple has said to have grown tighter recently and the company will likely see impressive results in the fourth quarter. Apple contributes to 35-40% of the Pegatron’s revenues.

As we approach the rumored iPhone 6 September 9 announcement, we see more and more leaked parts and other iPhone 6 tidbits. Today, the fully assembled logic board surfaced weeks after a similar leak surfaced.

The processor is hidden under some shielding, but flex cable connectors, flash storage, the SIM slot and more are visible from the photo.

  • Apple Bans Two Hazardous Chemicals From Final Assembly of iPhone, iPad and Macs

Apple is banning two potentially hazardous chemicals from the final assembly of its products. Both benzene and n-hexande will no longer be used for the final assembly of iPhones, iPads, Macs, iPods and more.

Benzene is a carcinogen that can cause leukemia if not handled properly and n-hexane has been linked to nerve damage. Apple conducted a four-month investigation at 22 factories and found no evidence that the chemicals had endangered any of the people that work at the plants. Apple says no traces were found in the 18 plants, while four the 22 plants had ‘acceptable safety levels’ of the chemicals.

Apple is also making all factories to test substances to ensure they do not contain benzene or n-hexane, even if they are not listed as ingredients. While Apple has banned the substances from final assembly of the products, it is still allowing use of the chemicals during early production phases of products. However, it does plan on lowering the maximum amount of benzene and n-hexane that can be used in those phases.

  • Customer Claims Apple Store Employee Gave Him a Receipt With a Homophobic Slur

A Portland Apple Store employee allegedly handed a customer, who self-identifies as queer, a receipt with a homophobic slur, reports The Oregonian. Adam Catanzarite says that he was handed a receipt on July 8th after purchasing EarPods with an email address of “f@g.com”.

Catanzarite took to Facebook to spread the word about his situation, after not being satisfied with the store manager’s response.

So here’s a thing. I got called a f@g by an ?#?Apple? employee here in ?#?Portland?. The store manager did not do what he said he would to rectify the situation, so now I feel it is important to share the story.
Being queer and having worked with queer youth, I know first-hand that this is an example of the type of ?#?homophobic? beliefs and actions that lead young people to harm themselves. This type of action is NOT OKAY, especially from a company that prides itself on being LGBTQ inclusive and welcoming.
My friends, I please ask that you like this status or share it with your networks to let them know that ?#?homophobia? does not have a place in PDX (or anywhere) and that you reconsider where you spend your money. Perhaps the ?#?Applestore? is not so deserving.

  • T-Mobile to Begin Throttling Unlimited Data Customers Who Engage in Peer-to-Peer File Sharing

T-Mobile will beging throttling customers who use their Unlimited LTE data plans for torrents and peer-to-peer file sharing, according to an internal memo to staff.

T-mobile has identified customers who are heavy data users and are engaged in peer-to-peer file sharing, and tethering outside of T-Mobile’s Terms and Conditions (T&C). This results in a negative data network experience for T-Mobile customers. Beginning August 17, T-Mobile will begin to address customers who are conducting activities outside of T-Mobile’s T&Cs.

  • High Resolution Images Show Tapered iPhone 6 Front Panel, Power Button, Mute Switch

Feld & Volk have shared new high resolution images of the iPhone 6 that reveal a tapered front panel, power button, and mute switch, reports MacRumors.

One photo shows the inside of the front panel and display assembly, with some of the components near the top pulled apart to give a good look at how the digitizer/LCD flex cables and earpiece come together with room for the front camera and proximity/ambient light sensors all packed into one small area of the device. Several other photos also highlight how the edges of the front panel taper. Those tapered edges should sit essentially flush with the edges of the rounded rear shell, providing for a sleek, nearly seamless look and feel for the iPhone 6.

There are also close up photos of the power button and mute switch. Feld & Volk say the volume buttons will be of similar design. Notably, the mute switch appears to function slightly different then previous generations pivoting on a pair of internal pins.

Spyglass is the easiest way to view your Security Spy cameras right on your iPhone. It’s also beautiful, too! Forget a ridiculous-looking IP camera app — this is the real deal guys, and we hope you love it. Created by two people who are addicted to their Security Spy cameras, Spyglass offers you complete control of your server from the palm of your hand.

    Features:
    • Automatic camera creation — just enter your server information and we do the rest!
    • Push notifications if motion alerts are triggered.
    • Live audio streaming if your camera supports it.
    • We also automatically optimize camera quality and refresh rate based on your network conditions. This lets you still view your cameras if you’re on a super slow connection as opposed to slowing down your whole phone, and you also have the option to disable automatic mode and use manual configurations.
    • A beautiful matrix view of cameras that support one or two rows.
    • Full PTZ control with zoom and presets.
    • View all of your recorded history that’s available — pictures and movies.
    • Take still frame shots right from the live camera feed that save the photos to your camera roll.
    • Landscape viewing.
    • It supports unlimited servers, so if you have more than one you’d like to monitor, you don’t have to worry about using multiple apps.

  • More iPhone 6 Parts Leak Showing Embedded Apple Logo, External Camera Ring

As the iPhone 6 nears, more and more parts are leaking daily. Today, various iPhone 6 parts have leaked including the rear Apple logo, external camera ring, flex cables, and other smaller parts.

The rear Apple logo shown again corroborates the company’s plans to have an embedded logo rather than a painted on logo. Apple has not used an embedded rear logo since the original iPhone, but it has used it for the iPad. Many initially hoped the rear cutout would be used for a notification light, but that likely will not be the case. Apple.club.tw also got its hands on a handful of Apple logos ready to be fitted on the back of an iPhone 6.

The leaked external camera ring also hints that the iPhone 6 could have a protruding lens, much like the iPod Touch. It is possible for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 to have a flush rear camera, while the 5.5-inch device have am aesthetically questionable protruding lens.

  • New Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Ads Attack MacBook Air [Video]

Microsoft has aired three new Surface Pro 3 ads today targeting the MacBook Air. Microsoft has long attacked Apple’s iPad in its Surface ads, so this is a shift from the company’s usual tactics. The ads tout the Surface Pro 3’s touch screen, detachable keyboard, and its ability to run just about any program. Each ad ends with the tagline “The tablet that can replace your laptop.”

The first ad, Crowded, shows off the Surface Pro 3’s touchscreen and ability to use a pen for handwriting and drawing. It also takes a shot at Apple’s new Powerful iPhone 5s ads at the end of the ad when the MacBook Air user must carry around multiple devices.

Tablet or laptop? With the Surface Pro3, you get the best of both. The Surface Pro 3 has the power to run full Adobe Photoshop, Office and Windows. But unlike the Mac Book Air, it has a touchscreen, a pen and converts to a tablet. Don’t try that with the Mac.

  • Inside Apple's Internal Training Program

The New York Times has posted a profile of ‘Apple University’, the company’s internal training program that introduces employees to Apple’s business culture and educates them about its history.

Steve Jobs created the program back in 2008. It’s highly secretive and rarely written about. Employees are discouraged from talking about it, no pictures have ever surfaced, and Apple refuses to make instructors available to discuss the training.

‘Apple University’ is run year round. The program was designed by Joel Podolny, formerly the dean of the Yale School of Management. Faculty members come from various universities including Yale, Harvard, the University of California, Berkeley, M.I.T., and Stanford.

  • Purported iPhone 6 Front Panel Leaks Again [Photos]

New photos of a purported iPhone 6 front panel have been leaked online by Apple.Club.tw. The images show both sides of the alleged part for the rumored 4.7-inch smartphone.

Recent reports suggest that the iPhone 6 will feature a display cover that is made out of an extremely hard material that’s slightly stronger than Gorilla Glass but not as hard as sapphire. This is in line with leaked front panel videos that showed a very strong part which wasn’t as durable as pure sapphire.

Apple is expected to unveil iPhone 6 on September 9th. It’s still not clear if both a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will be unveiled at the event.

  • FBNoNeedMessenger Tweak Lets You Avoid Installing Facebook Messenger

FBNoNeedMessenger is a free Cydia tweak that lets you read and reply to Facebook messages without installing a separate Messenger app.

Many users were annoyed to find that they would need a separate Facebook Messenger app to read/reply to their Facebook Messages on iOS. Facebook started rolling out this change this week to an initial wave of users in the United States.

Once you install FBNoNeedMessenger, you can continue using Facebook as before, with the ability to reply and read your messages right within the app. The tweak has no settings to configure, so you just need to install it, and you’re good to go!

  • FCC Wants Answers From All Major Carriers Regarding Data Throttling Practices

After probing Verizon for its data throttling practices, the FCC is now asking all major mobile carriers to justify data throttling. Verizon first announced that it would be slow down speeds for the top 5% of unlimited 4G LTE data customers starting in October, which had the FCC voicing its concern for the new policy.

In its initial response, Verizon noted that it is doing no wrong in throttling customers. Verizon claimed other carriers like AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile have been doing it for years and “This practice has been widely accepted with little or no controversy.”

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler was not buying Verizon’s response (and neither are we!)

  • Gruber Says Apple Will Announce Its 'Wrist Wearable Thing' Next Month [Update]

John Gruber of Daring Fireball says that Apple will announce its ‘wrist wearable thing’ next month. He made the prediction in a post discussing the Moto 360 design.

It looks like Motorola’s designers tried to draw as much attention as they could to the 360’s stupid flat-tire display shape.

The only way this could get funnier would be if it doesn’t even ship until after Apple announces their wrist wearable thing next month.

  • China Reportedly Bans Government Purchases of Apple Products

China has removed Apple products from the list of eligible items that can be bought with public money due to security concerns, according to Bloomberg.

Ten Apple products including iPad, iPad Mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro were removed from the government procurement list for July. Both the iPads and MacBooks were on the June version of the list. These changes come just weeks after the Chinese state media labeled the iPhone a “national security concern.”

Apple is the latest U.S. technology company to be excluded from Chinese government purchases amid escalating tensions between the countries over claims of hacking and cyberspying. China’s procurement agency told departments to stop buying antivirus software from Symantec Corp. and Kaspersky Lab, while Microsoft Corp. was shut out of a government purchase of energy-efficient computers.

  • Square-Enix Announces Chaos Rings 3 for iOS

Today, Square-Enix announced Chaos Rings 3, the next game in its Chaos Rings series for iOS, Android and PlayStation Vita. The Chaos Rings series is a role-playing video game developed by Media Vision but published be Square-Enix. Chaos Rings II was originally selected as a ‘Best of 2012’ app by Apple.

Details for the new game are a bit scarce, but some initial screenshots provide a little insight, notes TouchArcade:

The first batch of screenshots shows some of the new characters, as well as a battle scene and camp screen with room for up to five characters. Given this is part of the Chaos Rings series, we can probably look forward to certain things like team-based combat, gene collecting, a plot rife with dramatic deaths, and so on, but until Square-Enix says or shows more, it’s all just speculation.

  • 5.5-Inch iPhone 6 to Feature More Powerful Processor Than 4.7-Inch Model?

Cowen & Co. analyst Timothy Arcuri predicts that Apple will equip the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 with a more powerful processor than the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, citing Asian supply chain sources.

AppleInsider notes that Apple has done this before with the iPad. The A7 processor on the iPad Air is clocked at 1.3 GHz; whereas, the A7 processor on the iPad mini with Retina is clocked at 1.29 GHz.

Arcuri also said that the processor in the 5.5-inch model could ship with a larger die, hinting at a more wide-ranging architectural split. A larger die might be a sign that the 5.5-inch model will feature additional on-die silicon, such as a larger array of graphics processing cores. Alternatively, it might suggest that Apple will make the two chips — believed to be the “A8” — in different fabrication plants using different processes.

  • Original BioShock Coming to iOS Later This Summer

The original BioShock first person shooter game will be coming to iOS later this summer. The game originally launched in 2007 on Windows and Xbox platforms, but since then it has been ported to PS3, Mac and other consoles.

Engadget got a sneak peak at the game, and while it noted the gameplay was fine, it did mention the graphics and lighting were cut down ‘dramatically’ and the experience was ‘subpar’ compared to its console versions.

In-game lighting and shadows are cut down pretty dramatically, as are art assets. The grandeur of Rapture is distinctly less grand, which sucks some of the life out of one of my personal favorites. The first thing you’ll notice is “iOS fire.” The game’s opening — a plane crash — puts main character Jack in the ocean surrounded by some hideously ugly fire animations. It’s the first hint that the iOS version of Rapture has been shrunken down to fit within Apple’s app store file size limitation, and it’s a nagging issue that I couldn’t shake in my hands-on time.

  • BlowToUnlock Tweak Lets You Unlock Your iOS Device by Blowing at It

BlowToUnlock is an interesting new tweak that lets you blow at your device to unlock and/or wake it. The tweak uses the microphone on your device to monitor and listen for a sudden noise. Once you blow on your device, you can set it to wake the screen, unlock the device or both.

You can also adjust the sensitivity of the tweak, which gives you the option to blow lighter or heavier to unlock/wake your device. The tweak is not always 100% accurate since ambient noises could impact the tweak’s detection. Adjusting the sensitivity could help those in noisy environments.

We’d imagine this tweak does have an impact on battery life since it constantly monitors the microphone; however, we haven’t used it long enough to know for sure. BlowToUnlock also works with headphones that have a microphone and supports all iOS devices on iOS 7.

  • XBMC Is Now 'Kodi'

XBMC has announced that the popular media center software is being renamed ‘Kodi’.

Since 2002, the software known as XBMC has gone through three namings. First, it was called Xbox Media Player. Upon realizing that it did a bit more than your traditional media player, in 2004 the development team elected to rename it Xbox Media Center. A mere 4 years later in 2008, the team once again elected to rename the software to simply XBMC, given that it had moved on from its original roots on the Xbox. Support for the Xbox was dropped shortly thereafter. Today it’s all happening one last time.

The developers say that the ‘XBMC’ name made little given that the software barely runs on the original Xbox and has never run on the Xbox 360 or Xbox One. Also, it now performs many more functions then your typical media center. Finally, there have been legal issues with the name.

  • Beats Music CEO Ian Rogers to Run iTunes Radio

Beats Music CEO Ian Rogers will oversee iTunes Radio now that Apple’s acquisition of Beats Music and Beats Electronics is complete. iTunes Music was launched back in September and by March it had overtaken Spotify to become the third most popular music streaming service in the United States.

Apple posted a microsite this morning to welcome Beats to the family saying, “Today we are excited to officially welcome Beats Music and Beats Electronics to the Apple family. Music has always held a special place in our hearts, and we’re thrilled to join forces with a group of people who love it as much as we do.”

Rogers, a former Yahoo executive, will run both teams to create cohesion in Apple’s streaming-music options, according to the people familiar with the matter. Pandora and Spotify, the two-biggest streaming music services, each offer both a free ad-supported service and a subscription-based service.

  • President Obama Signs Cell Phone Unlocking Bill Into Law

President Obama has signed the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act into law, after it passed both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate. The bill restores the right for consumers to unlock their cell phones, including the iPhone.

Unfortunately, the bill does not permanently legalize cell phone unlocking, however it does require the Library of Congress to put a temporary exemption back in place while it decides whether or not to extend it for renewal. The bill does give the Library of Congress the power to determine whether or not consumers have the choice to unlock their cell phone, and later next year the copyright office could restore the ban.

Today, President Obama will sign into law the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, and in doing so, will achieve a rare trifecta: a win for American consumers, a win for wireless competition, and an example of democracy at its best — bipartisan congressional action in direct response to a call to action from the American people.

  • iPhone and iPad Revenues Compared to Entire Companies [Charts]

A brief comparison of Apple’s iPhone and iPad sales compared to the some of the largest companies around has been compiled by Slate.

Apple generated $19.74 billion in iPhone sales last quarter. That’s more than Amazon’s last reported quarterly revenue. It’s also more than the revenues of Coca-Cola and McDonald’s combined. Google and eBay combined barely beat that number.

iPad sales are lower than iPhone at $5.9 billion; however, that’s still greater than Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Groupon, and Tesla. Those companies combined barely outweigh Apple’s Mac sales of $5.5 billion.

  • BetterWiFi7 Tweak Adds Enhancements to Wi-Fi Functionality in iOS

BetterWiFi7 is a tweak from Simon Selg that adds enhancements to the Wi-Fi functionality of iOS 7.

Here are are some of the added features:
? “Pull to Refresh”: Allows you to refresh the network list by pulling it down, like in the mail app.
? “Open networks only” switch: A new switch on top or on the bottom of the WiFi network list, which allows you to filter all encrypted networks. Useful when you are searching for an open WiFi network
? “Known Network List”: Gives you a list of all networks you’ve ever been connected too, including their passwords, which you can access from the WiFi Settings.
? “Remove RSSI Limit”: Removes the signal strength limit set by Apple. This allows you to see networks which farther away and connect to them if the signal is not too weak.
? “Show network encryption”: Shows the encryption (WPA2, WPA, WEP, None) of each network.
? “Show network MAC Address”: Shows the MAC Address of the network’s base station
? “Show exact signal strength”: Shows the exact signal strength in dBm for each network

In addition, a “Smart Passcode Lock” feature allows the disabling of your passcode when connected to specified networks. BetterWiFi7 decides whether you are connected to a “trusted” network by comparing the networks MAC-Address (which is unique per Network) and not by checking its name/SSID, which is not unique (“dlink” for example).

  • Verizon to Begin Throttling Unlimited LTE Data Plans in October

Verizon has throttled unlimited 3G data plans for years now, but now the carrier has plans to do the same with 4G LTE. Beginning October 1st, Verizon will throttle unlimited 4G LTE data customers if they meet all of the following criteria:

? You have an unlimited data plan
? Your data usage falls within the top 5% of all Verizon customers. Currently that threshold is 4.7GB
? You have completed your contract term (you’re a month-to-month customer)
? You are in an area that is experiencing high demand

Verizon is quick to note that it is not technically throttling customers. Instead it is ‘implementing network optimization practices.’ Verizon says that unlike throttling, you’re speeds under network optimization will only be reduced if you are connected to a cell site that is under a heavy load (and your usage is already in the top 5%).

  • Alleged iPhone 6 Logic Board Surfaces, Will Reportedly Feature NFC and 802.11ac Wi-Fi

Blog Nowwhereelse.fr has received photos of what it claims to be the logic board for the iPhone 6. The site describes the source as ‘particularly reliable,’ but as always, we cannot confirm the authenticity of the pictures.

The logic board looks similar to the iPhone 5s, with one exception being that the top piece bracket is much longer than previous generations., indicating significant internal design changes. It has even been noted that this leaked logic board matches up perfectly with the rear shell/casing leaks we have already seen for the iPhone 6.

The source also claims that Apple’s next generation iPhone 6 will be referenced internally as N61, and will feature NFC and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. We’ve already heard of rumors for both NFC and 802.11ac Wi-Fi, however we cannot confirm the existence of such features on the logic board from the photos that surfaced today.

The Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, brought by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) reinstates the rule that would allow consumers to use their device on other networks by unlocking their device — whether on their own or by a third-party service. Unfortunately, similar to the House Bill that was passed a few months ago, it does not permanently legalize cell phone unlocking, however it does require the Library of Congress to put a temporary exemption back in place while it decides whether or not to extend it for renewal.

The legislation approved by the House Friday, which the Senate unanimously approved last week, reinstates a 2010 rulemaking by the Librarian of Congress so that consumers can transfer, or “unlock,” their cell phones without running afoul of copyright laws. It also directs the Librarian of Congress to consider whether other wireless devices, like tablets, should be eligible for unlocking.

  • Bose Sues Apple's Beats Over Noise-Cancelling Headphone Patents

Bose has sued Beats, a company which Apple has agreed to acquire, over its noise-cancelling headphone patents. The company has also filed a complaint in the U.S. International Trade Commission against Beats, and others, asserting infringement of the same patents.

Bose says for almost 50 years it has made significant investment in the research, development, engineering, and design of proprietary technologies now implemented in its products, such as noise cancelling headphones.

The company’s noise cancelling headphones are protected by numerous patents. It’s latest noise cancelling headphones model, the QC20, is protected by at least 27 U.S. patents and applications (14 patents and 13 pending applications).

  • Leaked Photo of iPhone 6 Battery Reveals 1810 mAh Capacity?

A photo of the iPhone 6 battery has allegedly been leaked online, revealing a capacity of 1810 mAh, reports NoWhereElse.

The image corroborates a previous report which said the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 would have a 1800 to 1900 mAh battery. This is better than the 1570 mAh battery of the iPhone 5s; however, the larger screen may negate the increased capacity.

The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 is said to feature a 2500 mAh battery. You can follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or RSS for updates.

  • iPhone 6 to Feature New 13MP Sony Exmor Camera Sensor?

Apple will use a new 13MP Sony Exmor camera sensor in the iPhone 6, according to a Digi-Wo report via GforGames.

Apple will allegedly adopt a new shooter for the iPhone 6, namely the Sony Exmor IMX220. Apparently this new unit boasts 13 MP and a 1/2.3? sensor and is capable of recording 1080p videos (3840 x 1080 resolution sampling). The source of this new rumor has a great track record when it comes to Sony related rumors, so we’d file this under “there is a chance it might happen”.

The sensor is also expected to appear in the Sony Xperia Z3 with 20MP shooting capabilities. Notably the 13MP units can be purchased on Alibaba already for $27 each.

  • United States Senate Passes Bill that Will Make Unlocking iPhones Legal Again

The United States Senate has passed a bill that legalizes cell phone unlocking after a similar bill was passed in the House of Representatives back in February.

Back in October of 2013 the Library of Congress ruled that unlocking iPhones purchased after January 2013 would be illegal. Many petitioned this new rule and pressured lawmakers to do something about the ruling. Eventually President Obama and even the new FCC Chairman urgedCongress to pass laws that make cell phone unlocking (including the iPhone) legal.
