Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Display Shoot-Out: iPad Air 2 Features Impressive Anti-Reflection Coating, iPad Mini 3 Disappoints

DisplayMate has posted a detailed analysis of the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 displays.
The most notable observation is that Apple has equipped the iPad Air 2 with an impressive anti-reflection coating. The coating reduces ambient light reflection by about 3:1 over most other tablets and smartphones (including iPads), and by about 2:1 over the best tablets and smartphones (including iPhone 6).
DisplayMate was able to measure a huge 62% drop in reflected light glare compared to previous iPads and agreed with Apple’s claim that the iPad Air 2 is “the least reflective display of any Tablet in the world”, declaring that an ‘understatement’.

Pre-orders for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launched on Friday in South Korea and early reports suggest the demand for the new devices was higher than demand for the Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Note 4, according to the WSJ.
On Friday, the country’s three mobile carriers began taking orders for both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. In less than an hour, the carriers reported that orders had reached tens of thousands, outpacing the rate reported for Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy Note 4 model at its launch here in September.
KT Corp reported 10,000 pre-orders in one minute and 50,000 pre-orders in 30 minutes. LG Uplus said it received 20,000 pre-orders for the new iPhones within 20 minutes. SK Telecom declined to provide specific numbers but said both its first and second batch of presale orders have been booked.

Rite Aid and CVS pharmacies are blocking Apple Pay. The companies are two of the at least fifty eight companies that have signed up to support the rival CurrenctC mobile payments solution, reports TechCrunch.
The goal of CurrentC is to let retailers bypass the 2-3% fees charged by credit card companies. Spearheaded by Walmart, a company called MCX (Merchant Customer Exchange) has developed a solution that links mobile payments directly to customers bank accounts. Unfortunately, rather than NFC, CurrentC uses QR codes to initiate transactions.
When it’s time for a user to check out, they request to pay with CurrentC. The consumer then unlocks their phone, opens the CurrentC app, opens the code scanner, and scans the QR code shown on the cashier’s screen. In some case, the reverse may happen where the consumer’s CurrentC app displays a payment code and the cashier scans it. If a QR code can’t be generated, a manually entered numeric code may be offered.

The NFC chip spotted in iFixit’s teardown of the new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 is only being used as a secure element for Apple Pay in-app purchases, reports 9to5Mac.
iLounge corroborates this report noting that there are no NFC antennas in the iPads and that Apple has not requested certification for NFC functionality from the FCC.
Despite speculation that the NFC chip is for an as-yet-unannounced Apple Pay enabled cash register, a search of the FCC’s device certification database suggests that Apple did not seek certification for any NFC functionality in the iPad Air 2, as it would have needed to do if the chip was to be used for wireless communications. Further, no evidence of an NFC antenna was found inside the iPad Air 2.

? The iPad Air 2 is thinner than the original iPad Air and the iPhone 6, and it doesn’t have a camera bump.

? Replacing Lightning connect requires replacing the entire logic board.
? 27.62 Wh battery down from the previous Air’s 32.9 Wh capacity.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple Wants to Relaunch Beats Music With a Lower Subscription Price

Apple wants to relaunch Beats Music with a lower subscription price and it’s asking labels to cut the price in half, reports Re/code.
The logic of Apple’s argument, relayed by people who’ve heard the pitch secondhand: Apple’s best iTunes buyers spend about $60 a year on downloaded music — $5 a month. So if subscription services dropped that low, any download buyers that switched over to the streaming model would generate just as much revenue for the music labels. And, more important, the market of potential subscribers would get much larger.
Re/code doesn’t believe that labels will get on board with a 50% price cut; even though, Spotify has just negotiated such a deal for additional family members. However, its likely that they would consider a smaller cut. Perhaps to $8/month.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple Launches iCloud Photos Beta Web Client Ahead of iOS 8.1 Release

Apple has launched a web version of iCloud Photos Beta ahead of iOS 8.1’s release tomorrow. Currently, the web version of iCloud Photos Beta is limited to developers running iOS 8.1.
The current web portal looks similar to the current Photos app found in iOS. You can select multiple photos to either delete or download them, and you can individually favorite, download or delete images as well.
iCloud Photo Library was first unveiled at WWDC, and will let you access any photo you’ve taken from any device. The images are stored at full resolution in their original formats, including RAW files. iCloud Photo Library will also be able to automatically keep your original high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and leave behind lightweight versions on your devices. Apple has stopped selling Bose speakers, headphones, and other accessories in its online and retail stores (via 9to5). We first reported that Apple would be removing all Bose products from its stores last week, and it seems Apple has finally pulled the plug.
We’ve contacted several retail stores, and they too have confirmed that Apple has removed all Bose products form its Point of Sale (POS) system, meaning this change is likely permanent and there is no way to sell any Bose product.
Bose and Beats were in a patent suit over noise cancellation, but that was recently settled.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Snapchat to Begin Rolling Out Advertisements this Weekend

Snapchat will begin adverting in its popular photo messaging application, according to the company. The ads will be the first for the company, which reportedly turned down a $3 billion offer from Facebook last year.
Snapchat notes that the ads will be placed in the “Recent Updates” tab, and will be removed after you view it, or within 24 hours. It notes that it has no plans to place advertisements in your personal snaps or chats, as that “would be rude.” Snapchat says it doesn’t want its ads to be “creepy” or “targeted” like most advertising these days.
This weekend we’re placing an advertisement in “Recent Updates” for Snapchatters in the United States. It’s the first time we’ve done anything like this because it’s the first time we’ve been paid to put content in that space. It’s going to feel a little weird at first, but we’re taking the plunge.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple to Temporarily Remove Blood Glucose Tracking From Health App

Apple has announced that it will temporarily remove Blood Glucose tracking from the iOS 8 Health app after an issue was discovered with manually entering values.
The Health app lets you manually enter and view blood glucose values in mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter). This unit of measurement is used by a number of countries, while some other countries use mmol/L (millimoles per liter). HealthKit supports both units of measurement. However, if you measure your blood glucose using a device that displays mmol/L, those values can’t be manually entered or displayed in the Health app with that unit of measurement.
Apple’s solution is to remove the ability to manually enter values via the Health app until an update is released that supports both types of measurements.

California Highway Patrol officers managed to locate a missing woman whose vehicle had plunged 500 feet down a ravine using Find My iPhone, reports ABC News. 28-year-old Melissa Vasquez had been ejected from her car and been missing for 17 hours when found by officers.

Officers responded but did not see an accident. OnStar then updated the location to downtown San Jose. Again, police found nothing. At 3 a.m. Vasquez’s stepmother called police to report her daughter missing.
Campbell police Officer David Cameron went to Vasquez’s house and found her iPad. He realized that he could use Find My iPhone to possibly track her location; however, there was a passcode on the device.

HBO today announced that it will offer a stand-alone streaming service in 2015. This means that subscribers would be able to access HBO content without having a cable subscription. This advancement could also be beneficial to the Apple TV, perhaps bringing it a step closer to becoming a real substitute for cable TV.
Speaking at the Time Warner Inc. Investor Meeting today, Richard Plepler, chairman and CEO, HBO, announced that the company will offer a stand-alone HBO streaming service in 2015. Following a portion of his presentation focused on HBO’s domestic business, during which he cited significant growth opportunities inside the pay-TV universe, Plepler then turned to the current ten million broadband-only homes, which is projected to grow.
“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO,” said Plepler. “So, in 2015, we will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States. We will work with our current partners. And, we will explore models with new partners. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple Tops Interbrand's Best Global Brands Ranking for the Second Year in a Row

For the second year in a row, Apple and Google claim the top positions on Interbrand’s Best Global Brands ranking.
Valued at USD $118.9 billion, Apple (#1) increased its brand value by 21 percent. Google (#2), valued at $107.43 billion, increased its brand value by 15 percent. For the first time in the history of Best Global Brands two global brands – not just one – have each earned a brand value that exceeds USD $100 billion.
Huawei (#94), the Chinese telecommunications and network equipment provider, also makes Best Global Brands history as the first Chinese company to appear on Interbrand’s ranking. With 65 percent of its revenue coming from outside of China and with its earnings continuing to climb both domestically and across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Huawei is quickly becoming one of the largest telecommunications equipment makers in the world. The company is currently the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world—just behind Samsung and Apple. The Chinese brand is one of five new entrants to enter the Best Global Brands ranking this year—the others being DHL (#81), Land Rover (#91), FedEx (#92), and Hugo Boss (#97).

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - WSJ: Apple Delays Production of 12.9-inch iPad to 2015, 12-inch Retina MacBook Enters Production in December

Apple will delay production of a larger 12.9-inch iPad until 2015, reports The Wall Street Journal. The report cites difficulties with meeting iPhone production (specifically the iPhone 6 Plus) as a reason for the delay. Apple had originally planned to produce the larger units in mass volume beginning in December according to people familiar with the matter.
“The top priority for the supply chain is to meet the overwhelming demand for the larger screen iPhones. The output of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus remains unsatisfactory,” the source said. “It would be challenging for display makers to split resources and spend a few months to ramp up production for a new larger screen iPad now.”
The WSJ also states suppliers are gearing up for mass production of a 12-inch Retina MacBook Air in December. Currently, Apple offers only 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air models that do not feature a retina display.

“The Note 4 does bend a little bit and funny enough it’s in exactly the same spot as the 6 Plus. It’s no where near as severe. I just have a tiny little warp here and I had to put a lot of pressure into it to achieve that, but still, at that same amount of pressure the Note 3 was completely fine.”

Doctor Web has discovered a new threat to Mac OS X dubbed Mac.BackDoor.iWorm. The complex malicious program has already infected over 18,500 Macs which can now be used by criminals to carry out various instructions.
During installation the malware is extracted into /Library/Application Support/JavaW, after which the dropper generates a p-list file so that the backdoor is launched automatically. It’s configuration is saved in a separate file and then the program reads /Library to find out which application it won’t be interacting with. If no ‘unwanted’ directories are found, it determines the home directory, checks to see if its configuration file is in the directory and then writes the data it needs to run into the file.
When running, iWorm opens a port on the computer and waits for an incoming connection. Notably, it uses reddit to obtain a list of control servers to connect to.

Sources who spoke to Bank Innovation indicated that the public release of iOS 8.1 will be in sometime in October and may have improvements for other Apple services. Previously, 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman reported that iOS 8 will be adding major improvements to the Apple Maps app, which hasn’t been added on to the initial (very buggy) release of iOS 8. We expect that the iOS 8.1 release will be timed to the still-unconfirmed October event held by Apple to announce their new iPad devices, as other websites have previously reported and Bank Innovation has heard rumors about, as well.
Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 8.1 to developers for download and testing on September 29th. Developer Hamza Sood managed to unearth Apple Pay settings and privacy information in the beta release.

We’ve posted a new video test comparing the Wi-Fi speeds of the 802.11ac iPhone 6 Plus versus the 802.11n iPhone 5s.
Both devices were freshly restored to iOS 8.0 and connected to the 2013 Apple AirPort Extreme. The router was placed 1.5 metres away from the smartphones and each iPhone was connected to the AirPort Extreme using a 5GHz-only network. No other devices were connected to the wireless network at the time of the test and the downloads were performed at separate times. We cut them together for comparison.
As you will see in the video, there is a substantial speed improvement!

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Jony Ive Discusses Steve Jobs, Apple Watch in Rare Vogue Interview

Vogue published a new interview with Jony Ive, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Design, highlighting his work with the company. Vogue editor Robert Sullivan sat down with Ive weeks before Apple unveiled the Apple Watch and even got a chance to see the product.
Ive first discussed his connection with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and how the two “just clicked.”
Five years later, a disenchanted Ive was about to leave when Jobs returned to reboot the then-floundering Apple, which happened, by most analyses, when Jobs enabled Ive. By Ive’s account, the two hit it off immediately. “It was literally the meeting showing him what we’d worked on,” Ive says, “and we just clicked.” Ive talks about feeling a little apart, like Jobs. “When you feel that the way you interpret the world is fairly idiosyncratic, you can feel somewhat ostracized and lonely”—big laugh here—“and I think that we both perceived the world in the same way.”

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - The iPhone 5c Was the Best Selling Smartphone in the U.K Ahead of the iPhone 6 Launch

The iPhone 5c was the best selling smartphone in the U.K ahead of the launch of the iPhone 6, reports Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
Historically in the month before a new iPhone is released we see a drop in sales share for Apple as users hold out for the new model. However, Apple has managed to limit the drop this year with its share of sales dipping just 1.6 percentage points versus July this year – almost half the equivalent drop seen in 2013 ahead of the iPhone 5 launch. This has in part been achieved through focusing on the iPhone 5c which tends to attract a slightly less tech savvy buyer who will be less likely to be holding off for the iPhone 6. The iPhone 5c was the best selling phone in Britain in August with 8.9% share, outselling the flagship iPhone 5s with 7.6% and the Samsung Galaxy S5 with 6.0%.
Kantar notes that out of the 13.3 million iPhone owners in the U.K., some 4 million are ready for an upgrade. Before the iPhone 6 unveiling, 85% of owners indicated that they would buy another iPhone at upgrade time.

A video has surfaced online showing two kids in the U.K. going into an Apple Store and bending the iPhone 6 Plus units on display.
The kids foolishly showed their faces at the start of the video then uploaded it YouTube, thinking they would not get caught. By the time they tried to take down the clip, it had already been mirrored and reuploaded to YouTube.
The video shows them trying to bend various iPhones 6 units in the store. The iPhone 6 Plus bends until the display pops out; however, the iPhone 6 did not bend as easily. The two then ask an Apple employee about whether the new smartphone really bends and are told that it doesn’t under regular use.

Apple has a new line of iMacs with ultra high resolution Retina displays in late testing stages, according to 9to5Mac. The desktop also features a faster processor and improved Wi-Fi antennas. It’s believed the new iMac could launch alongside OS X Yosemite later this year.

Charging the new Apple iPhone 6 only costs about $0.47 per year and charging its big brother, the iPhone 6 Plus, doesn’t cost much more, according to oPower.
Using a Watts Up Pro Electricity Consumption Meter, oPower discovered that it takes about 10.5 watt-hours of electricity to fully charge an iPhone 6. If you do that 365 times a year, that’s 3.8 kilowatt-hours in total. At an average US retail price of 12.29 cents per kilowatt-hour, it will cost iPhone 6 users just $0.47 per year to charge their device.
The iPhone 6 Plus has a larger battery and thus draws more electricity per fill-up (16.8 watt-hours). However, oPower estimates that it only needs a fill-up once every 1.46 days. Thus, it will cost iPhone 6 Plus owners about $0.52 per year to charge their device.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple Likely Equipped the iPhone 6 With Two Accelerometers to Minimize Power Consumption

Recent iPhone 6 teardowns reveal that the iPhone 6 features two accelerometers, a six-axis InvenSense combination gyroscope-accelerometer and a Bosch BMA280 three-axis accelerometer. The big question has been why Apple would need two accelerometers in the new iPhone. After some analysis Chipworks believes the answer is power management.
The InvenSense device can operate as a six axis inertial sensor, or as either a three-axis gyroscope or a three-axis accelerometer. It is rated to consume 3.4 mA in the six-axis mode, 3.2 mA in the gyroscope mode and 450 µA in the accelerometer normal mode. By contrast, the Bosch device operates as a 3-axis accelerometer only and it consumes 130 µA of current in the accelerometer normal mode. Both devices offer two low power levels of operation for the accelerometer function. The InvenSense device actually consumes less current in its lowest power mode, with a 1 Hz update rate.
The InvenSense can provide full six-axis integration of the data by the on-chip digital motion processor which is great for gaming and other applications that need sophisticated inertial sensing capabilities and higher sensitivity.

Consumer Reports has announced the results of its ‘authoritative test’ to determine if the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus suffer from bendability issues.

At first, 10 pounds of force was applied for 30 seconds, then released. They increased the force in 10-pound increments, noting when the phones first started to deform and when they saw the screen come loose from the case.

Unbox Therapy has followed up their original iPhone 6 Plus bend test video with a new one that puts several other smartphones to the test.
Thankfully, the iPhone 6 performs much better than the iPhone 6 Plus, proving fairly difficult to bend. While there does appear to be some risk that you will bend the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus in your pocket, it seems much less likely to happen with the 4.7-inch iPhone 6. That being said, all the other smartphones tested did even better than both iPhone 6 models with the Moto X holding up the best.

“Sadly there has been little in the way of measurable improvement in the sensor between these two devices,” he wrote. “Fake fingerprints created using my previous technique were able to readily fool both devices.”

We received reports that the update causes cell service and Touch ID issues. Users constantly see ‘Searching’ or ‘No Service’ in the place of the carrier’s text. In addition, Touch ID is completely broken. From what we understand, the issues are centered around the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus — other iPhone users are not reporting any major issues.
We recommend that users hold off on updating, until Apple releases another update to fix these issues. If you’ve already downloaded, you can downgrade to iOS 8 for a limited time.

Most notable is the water test in which both smartphones were submersed for 10 seconds. Although the audio stopped play briefly on both devices, it soon returned and both were fully functional after being removed from the water. This is likely due to the new gaskets that Apple has placed around power and volume buttons, as noted in iFixit’s tear down review.
