Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Display Shoot-Out: iPad Air 2 Features Impressive Anti-Reflection Coating, iPad Mini 3 Disappoints

DisplayMate has posted a detailed analysis of the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 displays.
The most notable observation is that Apple has equipped the iPad Air 2 with an impressive anti-reflection coating. The coating reduces ambient light reflection by about 3:1 over most other tablets and smartphones (including iPads), and by about 2:1 over the best tablets and smartphones (including iPhone 6).
DisplayMate was able to measure a huge 62% drop in reflected light glare compared to previous iPads and agreed with Apple’s claim that the iPad Air 2 is “the least reflective display of any Tablet in the world”, declaring that an ‘understatement’.

Pre-orders for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launched on Friday in South Korea and early reports suggest the demand for the new devices was higher than demand for the Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Note 4, according to the WSJ.
On Friday, the country’s three mobile carriers began taking orders for both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. In less than an hour, the carriers reported that orders had reached tens of thousands, outpacing the rate reported for Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy Note 4 model at its launch here in September.
KT Corp reported 10,000 pre-orders in one minute and 50,000 pre-orders in 30 minutes. LG Uplus said it received 20,000 pre-orders for the new iPhones within 20 minutes. SK Telecom declined to provide specific numbers but said both its first and second batch of presale orders have been booked.

Rite Aid and CVS pharmacies are blocking Apple Pay. The companies are two of the at least fifty eight companies that have signed up to support the rival CurrenctC mobile payments solution, reports TechCrunch.
The goal of CurrentC is to let retailers bypass the 2-3% fees charged by credit card companies. Spearheaded by Walmart, a company called MCX (Merchant Customer Exchange) has developed a solution that links mobile payments directly to customers bank accounts. Unfortunately, rather than NFC, CurrentC uses QR codes to initiate transactions.
When it’s time for a user to check out, they request to pay with CurrentC. The consumer then unlocks their phone, opens the CurrentC app, opens the code scanner, and scans the QR code shown on the cashier’s screen. In some case, the reverse may happen where the consumer’s CurrentC app displays a payment code and the cashier scans it. If a QR code can’t be generated, a manually entered numeric code may be offered.

The project applicant is requesting the approval of an Architectural and Site approval and a Tree Removal Permit to refine the phase 2 portion of Apple’s previously approved office, research and development campus. The project site is located east and west of N. Tantau bounded by Calabasas Creek to the north and west, City of Santa Clara limits to the east and I-280 to the south.
Apple plans to build a set of research and development buildings to the east and west of North Tantau Avenue. The buildings will house 2,200 employees and include 1,740 parking spots. The main building has four stories of office space with a cafeteria and the other two buildings will be two-story testing facilities. You can download the plans from here.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - Apple is Reportedly Rebuilding Beats Music to Relaunch It Next Year as Part of iTunes

Apple is rebuilding Beats Music and plans to relaunch it next year as part of iTunes, reports the WSJ.
The news comes as iTunes downloads have taken a sharp drop. Since the start of the year, digital music sales are reportedly down 13-14%. That’s much worse than the 2.1% drop last year.
The plummeting download numbers help illustrate why Apple bought the $10-a-month subscription streaming service Beats Music earlier this year, as part of its $3 billion acquisition that included headphone maker Beats Electronics. Apple is rebuilding Beats Music and plans to relaunch it next year as part of iTunes, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Ralph Nader, a five-time presidential candidate, has written an open letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook criticizing him for spending billions on stock buybacks instead of helping impoverished factory workers.
Nader notes that if Apple had spent that $130 billion to endow a foundation, the interest would have been enough to double wages, ensure a 40 hr work week, and improve health, safety, and environmental standards for hundreds of thousands of workers.

AT&T is locking down the new Apple SIM after it’s activated on their network, notes T-Mobile CEO John Legere.
Here’s how the Apple SIM is supposed to work:
The new Apple SIM is preinstalled on iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi + Cellular models. The Apple SIM gives you the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on your iPad. So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you — with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTube - NFC Chip in iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 is Reportedly a Secure Element for Apple Pay

The NFC chip spotted in iFixit’s teardown of the new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 is only being used as a secure element for Apple Pay in-app purchases, reports 9to5Mac.
iLounge corroborates this report noting that there are no NFC antennas in the iPads and that Apple has not requested certification for NFC functionality from the FCC.
Despite speculation that the NFC chip is for an as-yet-unannounced Apple Pay enabled cash register, a search of the FCC’s device certification database suggests that Apple did not seek certification for any NFC functionality in the iPad Air 2, as it would have needed to do if the chip was to be used for wireless communications. Further, no evidence of an NFC antenna was found inside the iPad Air 2.
