  • Google's Eric Schmidt: Tim Cook is Wrong, Google is More Secure Than Apple [Video]

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt says that Apple CEO Tim Cook’s recent statements on privacy at Google are wrong and that Google’s systems are far more secure than Apple’s in an interview with CNN Money.

Google’s Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg tell Christine Romans why Google is the safest place on the web, and why they hired Sheryl Sandberg without having a job for her.

In regards to Cook’s comments, Schmidt said, “Someone didn’t brief him correctly on Google’s policies. It’s unfortunate for him. In the first place, in Google’s case, we have always been the leader in security and encryption. Our systems are far more secure and encrypted than anyone including Apple. They’re catching up, which is great. Aside from the fact that we show ads in Gmail which we’ve done for a decade and we use that information for nothing, all the things he implied we’re doing, we don’t do.”

  • New Mac.BackDoor.iWorm Threat Has Infected Over 18,500 Macs

Doctor Web has discovered a new threat to Mac OS X dubbed Mac.BackDoor.iWorm. The complex malicious program has already infected over 18,500 Macs which can now be used by criminals to carry out various instructions.

During installation the malware is extracted into /Library/Application Support/JavaW, after which the dropper generates a p-list file so that the backdoor is launched automatically. It’s configuration is saved in a separate file and then the program reads /Library to find out which application it won’t be interacting with. If no ‘unwanted’ directories are found, it determines the home directory, checks to see if its configuration file is in the directory and then writes the data it needs to run into the file.

When running, iWorm opens a port on the computer and waits for an incoming connection. Notably, it uses reddit to obtain a list of control servers to connect to.

  • Yahoo Acquires MessageMe Mobile Messaging App

Yahoo has acquired the MessageMe mobile messaging app for iOS and Android, reports TechCrunch.

The deal, we’re hearing from multiple sources, is a talent acquisition falling into the “single-digit” millions. [Update: We’re hearing now that the deal may actually better than this. Word is the deal is actually in the double-digit millions, and has been structured to be favorable to investors and employees alike.) Yahoo is announcing the acquisition internally today, and the MessageMe team begins work Monday.

In early 2013 the app raised $10 million in Series A funding, in a round led by ex-Mozilla CEO John Lilly of Greylock Partners. TechCrunch also notes that investors in the startup include some high profile venture capitalists such as: True Ventures, First Round Capital, Google Ventures, SVAngel, Resolut.vc, Andreessen Horowitz, and Social+Capital Partnership, and other angels. Some of those helped finance a $1.9 million seed round in March 2013.
