  • Apple to Release iOS 8.1 With Apple Pay Support on October 20th?

Apple will reportedly release iOS 8.1 and launch Apple Pay on October 20th, according to Bank Innovation.

Sources close to Apple have been confirming that Apple Pay would be attached to iOS 8.1 since the September 9 iPhone event held earlier this month. Sources who spoke to Bank Innovation indicated that the public release of iOS 8.1 will be in sometime in October and may have improvements for other Apple services. Previously, 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman reported that iOS 8 will be adding major improvements to the Apple Maps app, which hasn’t been added on to the initial (very buggy) release of iOS 8. We expect that the iOS 8.1 release will be timed to the still-unconfirmed October event held by Apple to announce their new iPad devices, as other websites have previously reported and Bank Innovation has heard rumors about, as well.

Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 8.1 to developers for download and testing on September 29th. Developer Hamza Sood managed to unearth Apple Pay settings and privacy information in the beta release.

  • iPhone Wi-Fi Speed Test: 802.11ac iPhone 6 Plus vs. 802.11n iPhone 5s [Video]

We’ve posted a new video test comparing the Wi-Fi speeds of the 802.11ac iPhone 6 Plus versus the 802.11n iPhone 5s.

Both devices were freshly restored to iOS 8.0 and connected to the 2013 Apple AirPort Extreme. The router was placed 1.5 metres away from the smartphones and each iPhone was connected to the AirPort Extreme using a 5GHz-only network. No other devices were connected to the wireless network at the time of the test and the downloads were performed at separate times. We cut them together for comparison.

As you will see in the video, there is a substantial speed improvement!

  • Jony Ive Discusses Steve Jobs, Apple Watch in Rare Vogue Interview

Vogue published a new interview with Jony Ive, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Design, highlighting his work with the company. Vogue editor Robert Sullivan sat down with Ive weeks before Apple unveiled the Apple Watch and even got a chance to see the product.

Ive first discussed his connection with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and how the two “just clicked.”

Five years later, a disenchanted Ive was about to leave when Jobs returned to reboot the then-floundering Apple, which happened, by most analyses, when Jobs enabled Ive. By Ive’s account, the two hit it off immediately. “It was literally the meeting showing him what we’d worked on,” Ive says, “and we just clicked.” Ive talks about feeling a little apart, like Jobs. “When you feel that the way you interpret the world is fairly idiosyncratic, you can feel somewhat ostracized and lonely”—big laugh here—“and I think that we both perceived the world in the same way.”

  • The iPhone 5c Was the Best Selling Smartphone in the U.K Ahead of the iPhone 6 Launch

The iPhone 5c was the best selling smartphone in the U.K ahead of the launch of the iPhone 6, reports Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

Historically in the month before a new iPhone is released we see a drop in sales share for Apple as users hold out for the new model. However, Apple has managed to limit the drop this year with its share of sales dipping just 1.6 percentage points versus July this year – almost half the equivalent drop seen in 2013 ahead of the iPhone 5 launch. This has in part been achieved through focusing on the iPhone 5c which tends to attract a slightly less tech savvy buyer who will be less likely to be holding off for the iPhone 6. The iPhone 5c was the best selling phone in Britain in August with 8.9% share, outselling the flagship iPhone 5s with 7.6% and the Samsung Galaxy S5 with 6.0%.

Kantar notes that out of the 13.3 million iPhone owners in the U.K., some 4 million are ready for an upgrade. Before the iPhone 6 unveiling, 85% of owners indicated that they would buy another iPhone at upgrade time.
