  • Apple to Announce iPhone 6 on September 15th, Release on September 25th?

A new report from China.com citing ‘inside sources’ claims that Apple will announce the iPhone 6 on September 15th and it will go on sale September 25th. GforGames notes that the source suggests China will be among the first countries to the device, leaving some possibility for a U.S. launch on September 19th as previously rumored.

This new report indicates that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will go on sale in China for 5,288 yuan, which roughly translates into $850. This comes in line with an earlier report which stated that the 32GB model will sell for the exact same price. Currently, the 16GB iPhone 5S is priced the same, in China. Moving on to the 5.5 inch model, which will allegedly be called the “iPhone Air”, the report says that the smartphone will hit the shelves alongside a price tag of 5,998 yuan, or $965.

China Mobile and China Unicom are allegedly testing their 4G network on an iPhone 6 prototype. In May, China Mobile CEO Li Yue revealed that about half of their 2.8 million 4G LTE subscribers are iPhone users.

  • Microsoft Reportedly Working on iOS Compatible Fitness Band

Earlier last year we reported that Microsoft was working on a smart watch. Today, Windows blogger Paul Thurrott claims that Microsoft’s wearable is actually a fitness band that will work with multiple platforms.

My sources tell me instead that Microsoft will this fall release a Samsung Gear Fit-like fitness band that will display smart phone-based notifications, just like the current and rumored watches and other wearables. So that’s the first bit of rumor busting: It’s a wristband, not a watch. (Yes, I’m sure you’ll be able to see the time on its screen. But the form factor is a wristband.

Microsoft’s fitness band will reportedly have the ability to sync with multiple platforms including Windows Phone, Android and iOS. Samsung wearables only work with Samsung devices and Android wearables only work with Android devices — but it seems Microsoft is taking an alternative route and having its wearable work with all platforms.

  • These Are the Best iPhone 6 Renders Yet [Images]

Check out these new renders of the rumored iPhone 6 design by Mark Pelin. The renders are the nicest ones we’ve seen yet.

Notably, a recent report claimed that the iPhone 6 mockups which have been circulating only offer a ‘rough idea’ of what the final iPhone 6 will look like. Apparently, the iPhone 6 may have a curved display that fits perfectly creating a seamless transition from the aluminum to the display.

Also, the antenna breaks found in all the mockups allegedly aren’t part of the final design.

  • Average Smartphone User Spends 30.25 Hrs Using 26.8 Apps Per Month [Charts]

New data from Nielsen shows that U.S. Android and iPhone users age 18 and over spend 65 percent more time each month using apps than they did just two years ago.

In Q4 2013, they spent 30 hours, 15 minutes using apps, a full half-day more than 18 hours, 18 minutes in Q4 2011. The average number of apps used per month, however, only increased slightly from 23.2 in Q4 2011 to 26.5 during the same period in 2012 and 26.8 apps per month in Q4 2013.

Smartphone owners ages 25-44 use the greatest number of apps per month (29 apps, on average), but 18-24 year-olds spend the most time on them (37 hours, 6 minutes). Social networking and search apps are still the most used. People spent nearly 11 hours per month, on average, accessing these apps. Entertainment viewing, including video, audio, and gaming apps, grew 71 percent among mobile users year over year.

  • Support for Legacy .Mac and .Me AIM Accounts Ends For Macs Running OS X 10.7.1 or Earlier

Support for legacy .Mac and .Me AIM accounts has ended for Macs Running OS X 10.7.1 or earlier, according to an Apple support document. To be able to use a .Mac or .Me AIM account with Messages, users must update to OS X 10.7.2 or later to achieve this.

To ensure a secure and reliable experience, customers using a mac.com or me.com ID to login to the AIM service via iChat must upgrade their Mac to OS X version 10.7.2 or later by June 30, 2014 to continue using the AIM service.

Reports earlier today claimed that Apple was ending support for all .Mac and .Me accounts, regardless of what OS X version the user was running. However, 9to5mac sources say that this is not necessarily the case, and Apple will continue supporting those accounts as long as customers upgrades to version 10.7.2 or later.

  • Galaxy S5 Failed to Outsell iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c During Its First Month of Sales in the U.K.

The new Samsung Galaxy S5 was the third best selling smartphone in Britain during May, lagging behind its older iPhone 5S and 5C rivals, reports Kantar Worldpanel.

May was the first full month of Galaxy S5 sales since its European release. Despite its blockbuster launch, the Galaxy S5 was only the third highest selling smartphone in Britain behind the iPhone 5s and 5c. However, among those who did buy the Galaxy S5 across the five largest European markets, 17% switched from Apple. Over half, 58%, of European Galaxy S5 buyers were existing Samsung owners.

Across Europe, Android is the number one operating system with 73.3% of the market. Apple comes in second with 16.6% and Windows is third with 8.1%.

  • Analysts Boost Apple Price Targets Ahead of iPhone 6 [Chart]

A majority of analysts have a now set a price target above $100 ($700 pre-split) for Apple’s stock. The new higher targets have followed the company’s aggressive stock repurchase plan and its 7-for-1 stock split.

Analysts are also predicting a hugely profitable iPhone 6 launch. In an investor note posted yesterday, Walter Piecyk notes that Verizon’s new smartphone leasing plans will allow many iPhone owners to upgrade for 0% upfront:

“Historically we estimate that ~20% of AT&T’s subscriber base was eligible for an upgrade during an iPhone launch quarter. That eligibility dropped to a low of the mid-teens in the second half of 2013 due to the stricter upgrade policies. We expect AT&T’s new Mobile Share Value plan to increase the percentage of AT&T post-paid subscriber base eligible to upgrade to over 65% by the time the next iPhone launches. In absolute terms that is the difference between 10 or 11 million eligible for upgrades and 45-50 million.”
