Apple has set the opening date for the first retail store in Brazil as Saturday, February 15 — as noted on its website and in an email sent to local customers. The store will be opening at 11AM local time, according to the email sent in by an iClarified reader, and it will be located in the luxurious VillageMall shopping center.

Sony has announced that it intends to sell its PC business currently operating under the VAIO brand to Japan Industrial Partners Inc. (JIP).
According to the company, it wants to concentrate on mobiles and tablets; rather than traditional PCs. Here’s the announcement:
Following a comprehensive analysis of factors, including the drastic changes in the global PC industry, Sony’s overall business portfolio and strategy, the need for continued support of Sony’s valued VAIO customers, and future employment opportunities for personnel involved in the VAIO business, the Company has determined that concentrating its mobile product lineup on smartphones and tablets and transferring its PC business to a new company established by JIP is the optimal solution. Sony and JIP will now proceed with due diligence and negotiate detailed terms and conditions of the business transfer, targeting the conclusion of a definitive agreement by the end of March 2014. Following reevaluation of the product lineup, the new company is expected initially to concentrate on sales of consumer and corporate PCs in the Japanese market and seek to optimize its sales channels and scale of operations, while evaluating possible further geographic expansion.

Apple has posted a new thirty second video entitled, ‘On the Runway With iPhone 5s’ to its YouTube channel.
The footage features a look at the iPhone 5s capturing Burberry’s September 16th runway show in London. You can check out the full length video here.
In October, Apple announced that it had hired Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts as Senior Vice President of Retail and Online Stores. She is expected to start at Apple this spring.

Yoni Heisler has compiled together a list of every Apple reference ever made in The Simpsons and Futurama over at TUAW.
In compiling the list, Heisler chatted with famed Simpsons writer Bill Oakley (seasons 4-8) and talented Simpsons director David Silverman (seasons 1-present) who gave him some additional insight into the references.
He also discovered that the shows creator, Matt Groening, helped Apple design a Macintosh brochure for college students in the late 80s. In fact, the co-creator of Futurama, David X. Cohen, is also an Apple enthusiast who even developed a game called Zoid for the Apple II. Notably, Dr. Zoidberg was actually named after that game.

Apple will reportedly use LG Chem’s stepped battery for its rumored iWatch, reports the Korea Herald.
Contrary to recent news reports of solar-powered smart watches, Apple has confirmed that it will stick with lithium-ion batteries for its upcoming iWatch. These batteries are to be supplied mainly by Samsung SDI, LG Chem and Tianjin Lishen Battery, according to industry sources./i]
“Apple will utilize LG Chem’s stepped battery since it offers better longevity than others and can be applied for different shapes,” a source said.

Samsung is giving athletes at the Sochi 2014 Olympics a free Galaxy Note 3 but that comes with a catch, according to a report from Bluewin and relayed by SlashGear.
As a condition of the gift, Samsung is demanding that athletes cover up the Apple logo on their iPhone so its not visible during the opening ceremonies. The guidelines were revealed by the Swiss Olympic team.
They were pleased to discover the Note 3 in among the other promotional kit sponsors have been offering, Bluewin reports, but the phone came with guidelines on what Samsung is said to be requiring in return for its financial support. The rule only appears to apply to athletes, rather than anybody else attending the opening ceremony.
