OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Includes NVM Express Support for Faster SSD Performance

Apple’s recent OS X Yosemite 10.10 brings support for NVM Express (NVMe), a new faster interface for solid state drives. Most drives currently use the AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface), which dates back to 2004. AHCI was originally designed for high latency rotating media and can’t take full advantage of SSDs. Advancements in non-volatile storage such as NAND and MRAM have led the industry to develop a better software interface to abolish the limits of AHCI. AnandTech describes the new interface: “The result is NVMe, short for Non-Volatile Memory Express. It was developed by an industry consortium with over 80 members and the development was directed by giants like Intel, Samsung, and LSI. NVMe is built specifically for SSDs and PCIe and as software interfaces usually live for at least a decade before being replaced, NVMe was designed to be capable of meeting the industry needs as we move to future memory technologies (i.e. we’ll likely see RRAM and MRAM enter the storage market before 2020).”Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here

The Apple Watch Has a Hidden Diagnostic Port [Photo]

The retail Apple Watch features a hidden diagnostic port. Louis, a MacRumors reader, was able to slip off the bottom band of an Apple Watch during his try-on appointment to discover the port and snap a couple photos.TechCrunch first reported the existence of the port last month. “The port has a 6-dot brass contact array inside the groove for the ‘bottom’ strap connector slot. Several sources have confirmed its existence and placement to me. It is very similar to the connector for the Lightning connector in iPhones, as that connector currently only uses 6 of its 8 available pins.”The port will likely be used by Apple to run diagnostics and perform repairs on the smartwatch. It’s been suggested that perhaps one day we could see some smart accessories or bands that make use of it but thus far Apple hasn’t even acknowledged that it exists. Additionally, Louis noted that retail staff haven’t had any training on how to use the port. The Apple Watch Display Time Can Be Set a Few Minutes Fast

If you’re often running late and set your clocks ahead by a few minutes to hopefully arrive on time, you may want to use this newly discovered feature of the Apple Watch. The smartwatch has a setting which lets you move the clock face display time ahead by a few minutes to essentially trick yourself into thinking its later than it really is, says 9to5Mac.Apple notes, however, that only the information displayed on your clock face is affected by adjusting the time via this setting. All notifications and alerts will still come in at the correct time. With this feature, users are simply moving displayed time ahead of the actual time in one minute intervals.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here
