WSJ: Apple Reportedly Shelved Plans to Make a Television Set Last Year

Apple cancelled its plans to make an Apple-branded television set last year, according to the Wall Street Journal. In addition to an ultra-high-defitinion display (4K), Apple searched for many features that would justify building such a television set. According to the report, the company considered adding cameras that would enable video calling (FaceTime) through the set. It also worked on a prototype display that was transparent when turned off (like glass), but used lasers to display an image when turned on. Apple scrapped the display because it used too much power and the image quality was poor. It eventually patented the technology in 2010.Apple spent nearly a decade of research on the TV set, but executives didn’t consider of any of the features ‘compelling’ enough to enter such a competitive market. Instead of releasing an entire TV set, Apple is now focused on creating a service with an Apple TV box. The device, as has been rumored, will be announced at WWDC in June. Apple is also in talks with content providers to create a bundled set of channels that would be streamed to Apple TVs — the company plans to begin programming this Fall. Click Wheel Keyboard Brings the Classic iPod Click Wheel to the iPhone Keyboard

Developer Adam Bell has introduced an interesting new way to type on your iPhone — using the classic iPod click wheel. Click Wheel Keyboard replaces your typical keyboard with the classic iPod click wheel. To type, you scroll through the alphabet using the click wheel. When you get to the letter you want you simply press the center button. The top button on the click wheel lets you delete letters and the bottom button lets you access the uppercase letter. The left and right buttons move the cursor in their respective directions. Click Wheel Keyboard is definitely not the most practical keyboard, but does offer a bit of nostalgia for those early iPod owners. If you check our Click Wheel Keyboard, be sure to give the keyboard full access, otherwise you’ll notice lag and it will not work properly. New Report Claims Next-Generation ‘iPhone 6s’ Could Be Released in August

As we slowly approach the release of the next-generation iPhone, rumors and reports will become increasingly common. Today, a new report claims that the yield rates for the next generation iPhone components are much better than expected and Apple could possibly release the device in August instead of the usual September release. The same report also claims that Apple has already began a massive increase in component orders, which, if true, could mean that the company is gearing up for an early release or preparing for strong demand. While Apple may have the hardware ready for an August launch, it still may hold off until the usual Fall release. Apple generally likes to launch new software and hardware together and if iOS 9 is not ready for primetime, then Apple could hold the release of the iPhone. Apple is expected to announce iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 at WWDC in June, leading us to believe an August release of iOS 9 and iPhone 6s is unlikely.
