HomeKit in iOS 9 Brings Remote Control Without Apple TV, Event Triggers, and More

HomeKit in iOS 9 is set to bring some major changes including remote control without Apple TV, custom event triggers, pre-defined scenes, and much more.First, HomeKit in iOS 9 will no longer require an Apple TV as a hub to control your HomeKit accessories. Remote access in iOS 9 now works over iCloud, and all traffic is encrypted. Vendors have access to this new protocol for free and Bluetooth LE accessories makers can also send notifications to your device. New in iOS 9 HomeKit is also the custom event trigger feature. In iOS 8, developers were limited to either time-based triggers or geo-fence triggers — that is, developers could only activate an accessories based on location or a time. Now developers can trigger certain scenes (activate or deactivate accessories) based on a set of different user activities. For instance, you can tell HomeKit to turn on all the lights when you get home after 7PM, but not if its before 7PM.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here

Pangu Jailbreak Team to Speak at Black Hat 2015

The Pangu jailbreak team will be speaking at the 2015 Black Hat security conference in a talk titled “Review and Exploit Neglected Attack Surfaces in iOS 8.” Pangu team members Tielei Wang, Hao Xu, and Xiaobo Chen will be presenting at the conference on August 5-6. The security design of iOS significantly reduces the attack surfaces for iOS. Since iOS has gained increasing attention due to its rising popularity, most major attack surfaces in iOS such as mobile safari and IOKit kernel extensions have been well studied and tested. This talk will first review some previously known attacks against these surfaces, and then focus on analyzing and pointing out those neglected attack surfaces. Furthermore, this talk will explore how to apply fuzzing testing and whitebox code auditing to the neglected attack surfaces and share interesting findings. In particular, this talk will disclose POCs for a number of crashes and memory corruption errors in system daemons, which are even triggerable through XPC (a lightweight inter-process communication mechanism) by any app running in the container sandbox, and analyze and share the POC for an out-of-boundary memory access 0day in the latest iOS kernel. The Pangu team was responsible for both an iOS 7 and iOS 8 jailbreak. Just recently, the group demonstrated an iOS 8.3 jailbreak at the MOSEC security conference in Shanghai. The team did not mention any release for the jailbreak, but some believe we could see a jailbreak once iOS 8.4 is released. TaiG, the other Chinese jailbreak team, says they have no plans to release an iOS 8.3 or iOS 8.4 jailbreak. Instead, they are focusing their efforts on iOS 9.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here

Latest iOS 8.4 Beta Fixes Messages Crashing Bug

iOS 8.4 beta 4, which Apple released yesterday, seems to fix the bug that caused the messages app to crash when receiving a specific text. For those of you unfamiliar with the bug, when receiving a certain series of unicode characters, the Messages app would immediately crash. In some cases, you would be locked out of your Messages app since it would keep crashing, unless you sent yourself a message. You can see a demonstration of the bug on video here. The bug was tied to the way banner notifications displayed to text and even expanded to third party apps like Snapchat. Apple had posted a temporary solution for the bug and informed iClarified that a fix via a software update was coming soon.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here

iOS 9 Hints at 1080p iPhone Front Camera With Flash, 240 FPS Slow Mo, Panoramic Capture

Future iPhones could see a major improvements to the front-facing camera, according to code fragments found in iOS 9. Hamza Sood has been digging around the mobile operating system and found hints that future iPhones could have 1080p front-facing resolution, 240fps slow-motion recording (at 720p), flash, panoramic capture, and a front-facing flash. It remains unknown if Apple is planning all these upgrades for a future device, or whether they would be incremental updates throughout generations. The iPhone 6s has been rumored to receive “the biggest camera jump ever. Most reports have only been discussing planned rear-facing camera upgrades, including a 12MP camera. With increasing use of the front-facing camera for selfies, it is possible that the next device receive some much-need improvements in the next generation iPhone. The current iPhone 6 front-facing camera takes 1.2-megapixel photos and supports 720p recording, burst mode, and time-lapse.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here

iOS Mail Bug Could Be Used to Phish Passwords From Users

Jan Soucek has discovered a new bug in the iOS mail app that could load remote HTML code replacing the original content of the message. Back in January 2015 I stumbled upon a bug in iOS’s mail client, resulting in HTML tag in e-mail messages not being ignored. This bug allows remote HTML content to be loaded, replacing the content of the original e-mail message. JavaScript is disabled in this UIWebView, but it is still possible to build a functional password “collector” using simple HTML and CSS.The bug could be used to create fake iCloud-like login forms that would capture passwords and more –right within the iOS Mail app. Soucek says he notified Apple of this bug back in January 2015, but the company never issued a fix — so he published a proof of concept to put pressure on Apple to fix the bug.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here

iOS 9 Lets Developers Build Ad Blocking Software for Safari

iOS 9 could let developers build an ad blocker for Safari, according to pre-release Safari 9 documentation. New ‘content blocking’ Safari extension would allow developers to create a JSON file that would be passed to Safari on iOS that would block certain images, scripts, cookies, and more. The new Safari release brings Content Blocking Safari Extensions to iOS. Content Blocking gives your extensions a fast and efficient way to block cookies, images, resources, pop-ups, and other content. The content blocking extensions would only apply to browsers, so developers would not be able to block ads in existing apps. Apple would still have to approve any content blocking extensions like Ad Block before developers could distribute such programs on iOS, so it remains unknown if the company what the guidelines are for such extensions. Ad blocking software has been around for years on all desktop browser, including Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. in 2013, Google removed all ad-blockers from the Play Store to precent ad revenue from slipping away.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here

Officials Investigate Apple Music for Antitrust Violations, Universal Music Denies Wrongdoing

New York and Connecticut attorney generals are continuing an ‘industry-wide’ investigation over Apple’s possible violation of antitrust laws while negotiating Apple Music. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard reports that Apple was being investigated for anticompetitive business practices. Last month, the Department of Justice was looking into Apple for reportedly working to end free, ad-sponsred music streaming tiers. The attorneys general wanted to know whether Apple pressured the music labels — or whether the labels conspired with Apple and one another — to withdraw support for popular “freemium” services offered by companies like Spotify in favor of Apple’s paid music subscriptions.Universal Music Group today responded to the attorneys initial inquiry stating that they have no agreements with Apple or other labels that would hurt the availability of free or ad-supported music streaming services. UMG added that it “shares the attorneys general’s commitment to a robust and competitive market for music streaming services in the mutual best interest of consumers, artists, services and content companies alike — and we have a long track record to that effect.”Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here
