Apple Stops Selling Nest Thermostat, Replaces It With HomeKit-Enabled Ecobee3

Apple has stopped selling the Google Nest Thermostat, replacing it with the HomeKit-enabled Ecobee3 thermostat, reports Mashable.Although the thermostat was only recently discovered as missing from Apple’s product offerings, it was removed earlier this month. Apple was amongst the first retailers to carry the Nest when it debuted in 2011. Not surprisingly, it has already been replaced with the first HomeKit-enabled thermostat, the Ecobee 3 ($249).It’s unclear if Google has plans to add HomeKit support to the Nest, and if it does, whether Apple will return it to its stores.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here

Apple Patents Touch ID Remote for TV and Home Automation

Apple has filed a patent for the operation of a remote that uses Touch ID to authorize access to television or home automation functions. The patent entitled, “Electronic Device Operation Using Remote User Biometrics” was filed on January 23, 2014 and published today. The company notes that electronic devices often include limited access features. For example, a television may require a passcode of a user in order to view particular channels or, in other cases, to turn on the television after or before a certain time of day. In a different example, a thermostat may require a physical key in order to change temperatures or settings. Further, a home security system may require an access code in order to arm or disarm a system. The access controller could distinguish between candidate users, approved users, and denied users using Touch ID. Apple Smartphone Shipments Up 34.9% as Samsung’s Shipments Drop 2.3% [Chart]

Apple’s worldwide smartphone shipments are up 34.9% year over year as of Q2 2015, according to the latest data from IDC. Samsung’s shipments were down 2.3%.Vendors shipped a total of 337.2 million smartphones worldwide in the second quarter of 2015 (2Q15), up 11.6% from the 302.1 million units in 2Q14. The 2Q15 shipment volume represents the second highest quarterly total on record. Following an above average first quarter (1Q15), smartphone shipments were still able to remain slightly above the previous quarter thanks to robust growth in many emerging markets. In the worldwide mobile phone market (inclusive of smartphones), vendors shipped 464.6 million units, down -0.4% from the 466.3 million units shipped 2Q14.”The overall growth of the smartphone market was not only driven by the success of premium flagship devices from Samsung, Apple, and others, but more importantly by the abundance of affordable handsets that continue to drive shipments in many key markets,” said Anthony Scarsella, Research Manager with IDC’s Mobile Phone team. Although premium handsets sold briskly in developed markets, it was emerging markets, supported by local vendors, driving the momentum that heavily contributed to the second highest quarter of shipments on record. “As feature phone shipments continue to decrease, vendors will continue to attack both emerging and developed markets with competitive smartphones that are both rich in features and low in price,” added Scarsella.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here
