The Amazon Fire TV has overtaken the Apple TV as the third most popular media streaming device, according to a new Parks Associates report. Amazon, Apple, Google, and Roku accounted for 86% of all units sold to U.S. broadband households in 2014. It’s estimated that 86 million streaming media devices will be sold globally in 2019.“Roku continues to lead streaming media device sales in the U.S. with 34% of units sold in 2014. Google is second with 23%, and new entrant Amazon overtook Apple for third place,” said Barbara Kraus, Director of Research, Parks Associates. “The market consolidation around these four brands forces new entrants to develop more creative features and functionality to tap into the strong consumer demand for streaming content. Apple has taken over all 24 display windows at the iconic Selfridges department store with a massive floral Apple Watch installation, reports Wallpaper.Adopting the smartwatch’s UI design, the installation is made from flowers ranging from 200mm to 1.8m in height, all featuring a unique configuration of the Apple Watch – including Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition.To create the display, a range of blooming flowers were photographed in stop-motion. Some flowers required more than 24,000 shots over 285 hours. Eight variations of the flowers were scaled and hand painted by artists for the windows. In total the installation has 24 large, 50 medium, and 5,525 small flowers, plus 240 slightly larger ‘small-plus’ flowers. The flowers were also created using different methods. Gartner has released a new report on smartphone sales for the second quarter of 2015. Worldwide sales totaled 330 million units in the quarter, a 13.5% increase year over year.Despite the launch of new S6 models, Samsung’s premium phones continued to be challenged by Apple’s large-screen iPhones. Samsung lost 4.3 percentage points in market share and declined 5.3 percent in unit sales in the second quarter of 2015. Huawei recorded the highest sales growth rate of 46.3 percent, thanks to strong overseas sales and 4G smartphone sales in China. iPhone sales increased 36 percent, which helped Apple gain 2.4 percentage points in market share. Apple recorded strong iPhone replacements in both emerging and mature markets — and particularly in China. Total iPhone sales in China grew 68 percent to 11.9 million units. Gartner notes that Apple’s double digit growth negatively impacted its rival’s sales and profit margins.
