iPad Pro A9X Die Shot Reveals 12-Cluster GPU, 2 CPU Cores, No L3 Cache [Image]

A die shot of the new A9X processor by Chipworks in the iPad Pro reveals a 12-cluster GPU, 2 CPU cores, and no level-three cache memory, reports The Motley Fool. You can see the GPU clusters in the blue boxes in the image below, the two CPU cores are in the green box. Notably, Imagination Technologies, the company who supplies the GPU IP, only lists variants of its Series 7XT graphics IP with 2, 4, 6, 8, and 16 “shading clusters”. That means that Apple has likely used a semi-custom implementation. The A9X chip is 147 square millimeters in size. That is 40% larger than the TSMC A9 chip in the iPhone 6s. The site notes that the L3 cache may not be present because the A9X features a memory interface twice as wide as the A9 which allows the chip to pass data to and from memory at twice the speed.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here

New Integrated Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C Port Debuts in Dell Laptops

The new integrated Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C port first announced by Intel back in June has made it into new laptops from Dell.Instead of using the Mini DisplayPort connector, which Thunderbolt has used since it was first introduced, Thunderbolt 3 is moving to a USB Type-C connector, which Apple introduced with its new MacBook. As a result, we will likely see USB Type-C make its way to the entire MacBook lineup throughout the next few years. Anandtech notes that the move to Skylake gave Dell the opportunity to add Thunderbolt 3 to the XPS 13 through a USB Type-C which also supports 10 Gbps USB, VGA, HDMI, Ethernet, and charging. The new connector can be found in Dell’s XPS 12, XPS 13, and XPS 15 laptops.Share Article:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Email,   Reddit,   Digg,   Delicious,   StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook,   Twitter,   LinkedIn,   Google Plus,   Newsletter,   App Store,   YouTubeAdvertise Here

Apple to Drop Headphone Jack for iPhone 7?

Apple is planning to drop the headphone jack with the upcoming iPhone 7, reports Macotakara.Apple seems to plan removing the headset jack from the next iPhone 7, according to a reliable source. Screen shape such as radius will be kept, however, it will very likely be more than 1 mm thinner than the current model. The company is likely looking to make its iPhone even thinner but the standard 3.5mm headphone jack limits the device from getting any smaller. The problem can be circumvented by getting rid of the port and equipping its EarPods with a Lightning connector instead of a regular headphone connector.
