A German hacker in Berlin has demonstrated the ability to listen in on an iPhone call using just its phone number, reports 60 Minutes. Karsten Nohl, who has a doctorate in computer engineering from the University of Virginia, was able to listen to U.S. Congressman Ted Lieu’s phone conversation from a computer in Germany. We wanted to see whether Nohl’s group could actually do what they claimed — so we sent an off-the-shelf iPhone from 60 Minutes in New York to Representative Ted Lieu, a congressman from California. He has a computer science degree from Stanford and is a member of the House committee that oversees information technology. He agreed to use our phone to talk to his staff knowing they would be hacked and they were. All we gave Nohl, was the number of the 60 Minutes iPhone that we lent the congressman.Share Article:Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Email, Reddit, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTubeAdvertise Here

Apple is planning to debut a major update to the iPhone in 2017 featuring an all-glass enclosure, reports KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.The analyst first predicted an all glass design with an AMOLED display last month. For this year, Kuo expects Apple to stick with the same general design as the iPhone 6 and 6s.It’s believed that Apple is looking to differentiate itself from competitors many of which are now using aluminum enclosures similar to the iPhone. Kuo doesn’t offer any details on exactly how Apple would create an all-glass iPhone. However, the analyst says that drop tests will not likely affect Apple’s decision, given that the iPhone 4 and 4S had a glass front and glass back with a steel band on the sides. Apple held a press briefing yesterday touting its security organization as the most effective in the world, reports The Verge. The briefing with engineers was highly technical and comes as Apple is at odds with the U.S. government over the importance of device security. The FBI and other government organizations want Apple to build a backdoor into their devices.Apple engineers said that protection starts with the Boot ROM, or memory chip, that includes a certificate that only Apple has access to. If a hacker tried to modify iOS to run their own code, the software wouldn’t run because they wouldn’t have access to the secret key. This applies to the iPhone 3GS and newer devices.Share Article:Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Email, Reddit, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTubeAdvertise Here

Microsoft has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Government after receiving over 2,500 requests to secretly access customer data in just 18 months. To make matters worse, the government demanded that Microsoft never tell customers their data was accessed by the government in a majority of cases. The urgency for action is clear and growing. Over the past 18 months, the U.S. government has required that we maintain secrecy regarding 2,576 legal demands, effectively silencing Microsoft from speaking to customers about warrants or other legal process seeking their data. Notably and even surprisingly, 1,752 of these secrecy orders, or 68 percent of the total, contained no fixed end date at all. This means that we effectively are prohibited forever from telling our customers that the government has obtained their data.Microsoft has attempted to fight many of these requests and the government’s demand that it not inform customers. The government, in a recent situation, has tried to have the company held in contempt for resisting its request.Share Article:Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Email, Reddit, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUponFollow iClarified:Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Newsletter, App Store, YouTubeAdvertise Here
